1. Superstitions:

What is a superstition? Write a short definition.

Superstition is the belief contrary to reason that attributes a magical explanation to the
generation of phenomena, processes and their relationships without any scientific proof
or evidence.

2. Vocabulary: Match each word with the correct definition.

FAITH. _strong belief or trust in someone or something.

HOPE. _to want something to happen or be true and think that it could happen or be
true.

LUCK. _the things that happen to a person because of chance: the accidental way
things happen without being planned.

CLOVER. _a small,green plant that usually has three leaves on each stem and that
usually has roun flowers that are White,red,or purple.
3. SUPERSTITIONS / FIRST CONDITIONAL.

a. Listen and watch the video. Then pause it and list some superstitions.

Make a list:
• The superstition that it is bad luck to walk under a ladder came from the Christian
religion.

• It is considered bad luck to stick chopsticks straight up in a bowl of rice.

• To avoid a baby being born with a facial birthmark, pregnant women in India don't
go outside during an eclipse.

• Being a bridesmaid more than twice is considered bad luck.

• The number thirteen is unlucky, but seven is lucky.

• Numbers four and nine are considered unlucky because they are similar to the
words for death and suffering.
• It is bad luck to spill salt, break a mirror, or see three butterflies together.

• Four leaf clovers and horseshoes, on the other hand, are considered lucky.

• Many people have good luck charms, such as a rabbit's foot or a lucky piece of
jewelry.

4. Write your own superstitions on the table below. Using First


Conditional.
