Web-Based Grading System for BEED Students

This document presents a capstone project that aims to develop a web-based grading system for BEED students at NEUST-MGT. It discusses problems with current spreadsheet-based grading systems, including confusion recording grades and time spent manually computing scores. The project seeks to eliminate these issues by creating a database-backed system that arranges student grades by section, securely stores backup data, and reduces time spent on grading. It is hoped this new system will benefit future educators by demonstrating efficient grading practices, and help both students and teachers through fair, consistent evaluations and increased time for other tasks.

CHAPTER 1

Background of the Study

Development is inevitable, that is the reason why educators’ digital fluency has been

recorded as one of the most important skills for connectivity, efficiency, and for an enhanced

teaching technique. In this 21st century, specifically in this pandemic, a knowledge of how

technology works is a must have for educators not only for teaching but also for computing the

grades of students effectively and for saving tons of hours. Microsoft Excel is a popular

spreadsheet which is a great help in this area that was launched in 1985 by the Microsoft

Corporation. It is composed of columns and rows where data can be input and be manipulated

through different formulas that is being used by educators’ for decades now. There is a lot of

students per classroom and so is a teachers’ workload of computing grades gradually increases.

BEED students of Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology may experience the

problem for their future jobs and so this research is dedicated to BEED Student’s by helping

them have an easier way of computing grades of their future students.

According to Thompson et al., (2021), an "Automatic Grading System" (AGS) can be

defined as any grading tool which provides instant feedback to students or teachers about

assignments and other performance concerning school activities. Hence, it is crucial to have a

grading system to save time that can be used for other necessities. From a programming

perspective, there is a lot of things to be considered of such as; the syntactic and semantic errors;

easier ways to input score; and deep examination of other similar tools to make it more creative,

sensible, and easier to use.

Moreover, this web-based systematic grading system will not also benefit the teachers but

also the students. There is a study where auto-grading tools improves students grade by twenty

percent (20%) because they are having an idea of what progress they are making and of when

they should exert more effort. According to Wallach(2020), when students can see the grade

metrics for a given assignment, they can continue pushing [changes and running the autograder]

until they reach the metrics they want. Additionally, human graders can unintentionally introduce

various biases, while students can also have lack of trust about the grading system. In this

scenario, students will ask for the computation of grades that will surely takes up a lot of time

because there is a lot of students to be considered of. Web-based systematic grading system can

solve both of the problems. Because of its OTP, students would be secured that their grades will

all just be equal to the amount of effort they exerted, while teachers will save time explaining to

students about the result because they can view it with their own eyes. This statement will prove

of how crucial web-based systematic grading system is for both parties.

Given these points, the premises presented justify the need to conduct this study to make

a comparison of speed and consistency of recording student’s grades between using a specific

spreadsheet tool or a web - based system with a dedicated database. And with these, the

researchers ought to assess the development of Web - Based Systematic School Grading Control

of BEED Student’s.

1.1 Statement of the Problem

This study aims to assess the development of Web - Based Systematic School Grading

Control of BEED Student’s. This study seeks to answer the following problems:

1. Teachers experience confusion in recording of grades using spreadsheets, sometimes

resulting in mixing grades of their students.

2. Difficulty in backing up student’s grades in external hardware or cloud - based storage

instead of database.

3. Difficulty in managing or arranging grades of different students in different sections.

4. Manual computing of grades consumes a lot of time that teachers can use in other tasks.

1.2 General Objective

The researcher’s goal is to develop a web - based system for controlling the grades of BEED

student’s from NEUST – MGT. The result of this study will be the basis for the comparison of

speed and consistency of recording student’s grades between using a specific spreadsheet tool or

a web - based system with a dedicated database. This study also seeks to obtain data in order to

discover answers that can solve the mentioned problems.

1.3 Specific Objective

1. To eliminate the struggle of teachers in using spreadsheet tools and to make sure that the

individual grades of students is on point.

2. To create a database that will record, secure, and backup all incoming data.

3. To provide an efficient platform that automatically arrange and filter the student’s data

based on their section.

4. To decrease the amount of time consumed in computing individual grades of students.

1.4 Significance of the Study

This study deals with the assessment of the development of Web - Based Systematic

School Grading Control of BEED Student’s. The researchers believed in the importance of this

study especially to the following:

1. Future Educators - this will serve as their guide in order to learn how grading

system works when they are already educators because this system can be

accessed by everyone. Additionally, his will help them practice and enhance

more their capacity of computing the grades of their future students.

2. Educators - this study will greatly help to maximize their hours by providing

the most efficient way of grading system. By backing up the data, arranging and

filtering it based on different categories, and securing it all by the OTP.

3. Students - this study could give them more idea of how grading system works

and will assure them that grading system will all be fair and square.

4. Future Researchers - they can use this as basis for their study and will serve as

their reference to help them improve their research connected to this study.

5. Researchers - aside from filling their curiosity, they will gain knowledge they

can use for future purposes like making a study connected to this one. As of the

process, they will be more creative and familiar with the codes and programs

that was input. This study will also help them improve their writing skills by

having an experience in writing a research paper. Lastly, as IT students, the

researchers can also use the result that will be acquired in this study for their

future jobs, or businesses.
