Assignment

(Transportation Engineering)
Last Date: 23 March, 2022
1. Write Short Note on: (I) Camber, (ii) Design Speed, (iii) Widening of Road.
2. Design the rate of super elevation for the design speed of 80 kmph on a horizontal highway
curve of radius 300m having coefficient of lateral friction (f) = 0.15. If the f = 0 and maximum
super elevation of 0.07 is not to be exceeded, calculate maximum allowable speed on this curve.
3. A summit curve is to be designed for passing distance of 600m. An ascending gradient of 1 in
50 meets a descending gradient of 1 in 60. Design speed of highway is 80 kmph. Determine the
length of the summit curve required when length is greater than passing sight distance and when
the length is less than passing sight distances.
4. Find the length of transition curve and extra width of pavement required on a horizontal curve
of radius 300m of a 2-lane highway passing through rolling terrain for a design speed of
80km/h. Assume all other data as per IRC recommendations.
5. An expressway four lane divided, passing through a flat terrain has a horizontal curve of radius
equal to Ruling minimum radius. If the design speed is 120km/h. Calculate the following
elements of the curve a) Ruling Minimum radius, b) Super elevation, c) Extra
Widening, d) Length of Transition Curve
6. The design speed of a NH is 100km/h. If the maximum permissible super-elevation is 0.10 and
the coefficient of lateral friction is 0.15, the ruling minimum radius of horizontal curve on the
highway is should be____
7. Explain Origin and Destination studies and its methods in brief. What are the applications of
origin and destination Study?
8. Define:
a) Traffic volume,
b) Traffic density
c) Time-mean speed
d) Space-mean speed
e) Journey speed
f) Spot speed.
g) Time headway
h) Traffic Capacity
i) Space Headway
j) Passenger Car unit
k) Level of Service
l) Jam Density
9. The speed relationship for a particular road was found to be u = (42.76-0.22k), where ‘u’ is the
speed in km/h and k is the density of vehicle per km. Find the jam density, maximum capacity
and density at maximum capacity. Sketch the relationship between density and flow and
indicate important traffic flow parameters on it.
10. Discuss the desirable properties of Subgrade Soil.
11. Differentiate Flexible pavement and Rigid pavement.
