For questions 1-8, choose the best answer (A, B or C)

Coral Reefs
Coral reefs are natural structures that build up over time in the ocean. Some coral reefs are very old and
‘extremely large in size ~for instance, the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia is up to 10,000 years.
Old and covers 2,900 kilometres. Coral reefs are often called the rainforests of the sea because they are
home to most of the animals and plants that live in the Earth's oceans. They offer protection, a food source
‘and the right temperature for these creatures to thrive.
Coral reets allover the world are in danger. Experts say as much as 25% of the world’s coral reefs are
damaged beyond repair. Humans are the biggest threat to coral reefs because of tourism. For instance, one
of the most famous beaches in the world is on the island of Koh Phi Phi Leh in Thailand. Before being
featured in the film The Beach in 2000, this area of coastline was almost completely deserted. However,
millions of tourists have been visting the beach — up to 5,000 visitors a day —and the boats that cany them
to the beach are damaging the coral reefs off the coast of the sland. The anchors break the coral apart and
‘the tourists throw rubbish into the water. Most of the coral around the beach has been destroyed already.
Nevertheless, the beach has officially been closed to the public during certain times of the year in order to
protect what's left of it
‘Tourism isn't the only threat to coral reefs, though. Global warming is also causing a lot of damage
‘worldwide. For example, sea water is becoming warmer and slightly more acidic and because coral can
grow only in a very patticular environment, many reefs are already suffering, Rising sea levels also affect
‘coral reefs, Coral needs light from the sun in order to grow, so if the depth of the water changes, it can
become too dark for the coral to survive,
Researchers say that if something does not change soon, coral reefs could disappear around the world
in less than 30 years. If that happens, thousands of unique plant and animal species will disappear, What's
the solution? Working to slow global warming and encouraging tourists to avoid coral reefs would be a

Which of the following statements is TRUE?

‘Why di tourists create problems on Koh Phi Phi Leh?

Read the following two passages about Video Games.
For questions 9-16 choose the best answer (A, B or C}.
Video Games
The benefits of video games
Parents often worry that video games are
Unhealthy for their children, but in fact experts have
found that there are many benefits to playing them,
especially fort
For one, teens who play video games have better
social skils than teens who do not. This is because,
with the oni
video games available today, teens
can form friendships with other gamers. Close, deep
‘friendships develop when two people have a hobby
‘that they love in common, and friendships between
gamers are no different. These friendships help teens
develop important social skis like truthfulness and
playing fair
Playing video games also has physical and
mental benefits. Gamers usually have excellent
reflexes. This means that their mind and their body
work together quickly; they can act - and react ~
better than others. Gaming improves memory and
concentration, too. In some studies, researchers
have found that teens who played video games were
able to focus better and remember a lot more details
than those who did not. So, teens who play video
games often do better in school as well
‘9 What is TRUE about teens who play video games,
‘according to the 2nd paragraph?
‘A. They have more friends than those who don't.
B They have more in common with thei friends,
© They develop better social skills than others.
10 Which of the following an best replace the word
‘truthfulness’ in the 2nd paragraph?
A. confidence
B honesty
© respect
11. How can playing video games help teens with their
studies?
A. by improving their ability to concentrate
B_ by taking up alot of their free time
© by reminding them to do their homework‘The drawbacks of video games
While there are a lot of benefits to teens playing
‘video games, there are also some drawbacks. For
instance, video games can be violent ~ the use of
‘weapons is common even in games for very young
children! Fighting and shooting games may
encourage video game fans of all ages to think
violence is a normal reaction to a problem. Parents
ccan prevent their children from coming to these
conclusions by resticting the type of games teens
play and talking to them about what they see and do
inthe games.
Research has also shown that video games can
be addictive. This means that the gamers spend all
their free time playing video games instead of doing
other things. As a result, they may begin to gain
Weight, do poorly in school or spend less and less
time with family and friends outside of their game,
‘Therefore, parents should limit the amount of time,
teens spend playing video games. They shouldn't
play games every day, and they should alvays make
sure they finish their homework and have quality time
with people in real ite in addition to spending time on
their gaming systems,
