1. The document outlines a learning plan for an 8th grade science class on species diversity. 2. It includes standards, learning competencies, procedures including activities to explore, firm up, and deepen understanding of species diversity and classification. 3. For the transfer goal, students will create a poster slogan demonstrating how communities work together to protect endangered and economically important species.

Junior High School Department

School Year 2021-2022

LEARNING PLAN

SUBJECT: Grade 8 Science

TEACHER: Mary Rose B. Pedrezuela

QUARTER: Fourth Quarter

TOPIC: Species Diversity

REFERENCES:

Ferriols-Pavico, J., Morales-Ramos, A., Ramos, AC., Bayquen, A., and Silverio, A. Exploring
Life Through Science Series. 2nd ed. Phoenix Publishing House

STANDARDS:

 Content Standard
The learners demonstrate an understanding of:
1. The concept of a species.
2. The species as being classified into hierarchical taxonomic system
 Performance Standard
The learner should be able to report (e.g., through a travelogue) on the activities
that communities engage in protect and conserve endangered and economically
important species.

(A) LEARNING COMPETENCIES:

The learner should be able to …
 Explains the concept of species. S8LT-IVg-19
 Classify organisms using the hierarchical taxonomic system. S8LT-IVh-20

(M) ENDURING UNDERSTANDING:

The learner will learn and understand that various species are necessary for the survival
of life on Earth, and that we can classify and organize the diversity of life on our planet using the
hierarchical taxonomic system.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION:

Why is it necessary to learn and understand the importance of species diversity and
classifying organisms using the hierarchical taxonomic system in your life?

(T) TRANSFER GOAL:

Students will be able to present and produce a poster slogan to demonstrate how
communities work together to protect and conserve endangered and economically significant
species.

TIME ALLOTMENT: 60 minutes

LESSON OUTLINE:

1. Procedure (EFDT)
 Explore (10 minutes)
 Firm-up (15 minutes)
 Deepen (5 minutes)
 Transfer (20 minutes)
2. Evaluation (5 minutes)
3. Closure or Assignment (5 minutes)

LESSON PROPER:

1. Procedures (EFDT)

 Explore - Fun BINGO (10 minutes)

The teacher will distribute Biodiversity Bingo boards and pens. The learners will be
divided into five groups and the teacher will explain how bingo works; as they explore, they
cross off each item they find. When they cross off five in a row, they yell "BINGO!" The
students will explore the outdoor area.

 Firm-up (15 minutes)

The teacher will discuss the lesson about species diversity; types of species based on
general ecological niches and based on specific ecological niches and learners are expected to
participate in discussions. There will also be a discussion about classifying organisms using the
hierarchical taxonomic system.
What is Species Diversity?

“Species diversity is defined as the number of different species present in an ecosystem and
relative abundance of each of those species”.

There are two constituents of species diversity:

1. Species richness: number of different species present in an ecosystem. Tropical areas have
greater species richness as the environment is conducive for a large number of species.
2. Species evenness: relative abundance of individuals of each of those species.

Questions:

1. What does it mean to have a diverse range of species?

2. What are the two (2) components of Species Diversity?
3. What is the hierarchical taxonomic system (from lowest to highest)?

 Deepen – Find me where I belong! (5 minutes)

The learners will be divided into two groups by the teacher, with each group choosing a
generalist and a specialist species. Each group will be given 15 examples of generalist and
specialist species. However, there are only eight generalist species and seven specialist species.

Generalist Species Specialist Species

Raccoons Panda
Rats River otter
Mice Owls
Cockroaches Koala
Coyotes Sword-billed
Whitetail deer Hummingbird
Brown rats Venus flytrap
Horseshoe crab

 Transfer (20 minutes)

The teacher will instruct the learners to make three groups. The learners are expected to create
a Poster Slogan and present it in front of the class.

Mechanics:

1. The theme is that communities work together to protect and conserve endangered and
economically significant species.
2. The learners are only given 10 minutes to create the poster slogan and 10 minutes to
present it.
3. Criteria for scoring:

Creativity 30%
Neatness 15%
Relevance to the theme 25%
Originality 15%
Uniqueness 15%
Total Score 100%

2. Evaluation (5 minutes)

The teacher will select learners to organize the domestic dog's taxonomic order.

Taxonomic hierarchy of the domestic dog

Kingdom Animalia
Phylum Chordata
Class Mammalia
Order Carnivora
Family Canidae
Genus Canis
Species Canis lupus

3. Closure or Assignment (5 minutes)

The teacher will give homework (written below) to the learners to make the mastery of the
lessons.

On a piece of yellow paper, write an essay on “How important are the diverse species in your
lives?”
