General recommendations for all IBM courses
Some of these resources might not be available until later in the course development process.
Review what is available and check back later for more resources:
• Attend any instructor training that is available for this course.
• Check for an SPVC (self-paced virtual class) of the course and, if available, attend it.
• Review the following course information:
▪ Locate the course description in the online course catalog at www.ibm.com/training.
▪ Read the course overview and course outline to understand the overall course content.
▪ Review the audience for which the course is intended.
Know your audience so that you can assist the students and tailor the course for anyone
who does not meet the audience background but is still participating in the course.
▪ Review the student prerequisites for this course.
You must know all of the information in the prerequisite courses. Depending on the
audience background and prerequisites, it might be necessary to review previous materials.
▪ Review the skills taught in this course.
Be sure that you know and understand all of the target skills for the course before you
attempt delivery.
• Study the course materials.
Request the course materials and request access to the course labs at least two weeks
before you are available to study them. Ensure that you understand how to run the lab
exercises and how to complete all lab setup steps that are required.
• Review all of the training paths that refer to this course.
You should know what comes before and after this course so that you can verify that your
audience meets the prerequisites and sell your audience on the follow-on courses.
Course overview
This course covers the features and functions supported by Backup Recovery and Media Services
(BRMS). BRMS is an integrated and comprehensive tool for managing backup, recovery, archive,
and retrieval operations for a single Power System with IBM i or multiple IBM i systems at a site or
across a BRMS Network.
The lectures describe how to perform the supported functions when using a 5250 emulation
session, when using IBM Navigator for i. Students then have the opportunity to practice in lab
exercises what they have learned in lecture.

Strategy
Teaching strategy
Each classroom session uses a combination of facilitated lecture, discussions, group exercises,
and demonstrations to convey the material.
Course evaluation
Evaluation measures the quality, effectiveness, and impact of the course. It enables students to
answer the question, “Does the course meet its requirements and objectives?”
For all classes, instructors provide an end-of-course questionnaire that students complete as
feedback on course quality.
Exercises overview
The objective of these exercises is to have the students successfully install, configure, and
implement Backup, Recovery, and Media Services (BRMS).
Students learn to perform these functions by using a 5250 emulation screen interface, System i
Navigator, and IBM Navigator for i.
All of the exercises depend on the previous exercises being successfully completed. Ensure that all
students have finished an assigned exercise before moving on to the next exercise.

Course updates
This course replaces course code AS28G (13.0 version). The following overall changes were
made:
The following information summarizes at a high level where to find changes to the course.
In this course version, we covered numerous changes about product names, and updated screen
captures. The course materials include new functionality and features like BRMS HUB. In most
cases, you can find terms in an updated screen capture meaning the visual was changed because
the new software version has a different design, functionality, and so on. Screen updates or visual
updates can mean the addition of new information. Any student notes after Notes word refer to
visual notes section.
There were two updates made to this course that were close to each other.
ERC 11
This update to include announcements made to BRMS in 2013 and 2014. The following terms were
changed in all of the notes for all visuals in all units:
• Product name was changed to reflect new naming: Navigator for i
• Product name was changed to reflect new naming of the operating system: IBM i.

course AS28. All mention of TSM was removed form this course.
ERC 13.0
• In Spring of 2015, the announcement was made that BRMS is no longer supported to work with
Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM). In this ERC, Unit 27 - TSM Client and BRMS on IBM i was
