INTRODUCTION
This project is the perfect “ALL ABOUT ME” team-building activity for
your class. It connects the individual with the group using tessellations
and it has a ton of “wow factor” when complete. It’s fun for kids and
easy for you as the teacher. I’ve done everything I can possible do to
make this a successful project - including a teaching video!
Students will each work individually on an abstract tessellation piece of
a person. They will personalize their piece by answering questions
about themselves, like what their favorite things are and when their
birthday is, and by adding their own decorations. Once their piece is
finished, they will get cut it out and assemble it into a tessellation
mural/poster/bulletin board display with their peers.
The message is clear. Each student is an individual, with their own
interests and talents, yet when combined with their classmates they can
create something beautiful and meaningful - we are all connected!
My hope is that you will get to know your students a bit with this activity
on the first few days of school and that students will be inspired by the
message that they are important as individuals and important as a team.
You could also use this to reconnect during the school year!
Once the pieces are finished and put together, they will
make a stunning bulletin board display for your class or
your school. Since the tessellation can go on forever, you
might want to keep extra pieces around. These would be
useful for adding new students, or to have parents do one
for open house or maybe volunteers - your tessellation
poster can grow throughout the year.

basic introduction to tessellation (so you don’t have to). I also explain to
your students how this project works. Then you take it from there!
