MECN5012A Assignment 2 2487216_Khosa
1. Idealization
1.1. Problem classification
We are dealing with a static structural problem. We are focusing on the linear
behavior of the structure.
1.2. Physical Model
1.2.1. Objective
To Use Ansys to solve static structural analysis problems.
To use Ansys Mechanical to create and control mesh globally and locally to
deal with defects on our geometry mesh.
To use a solving tool to investigate the Bench vice lead screw for deformation,
allowable stresses on the lead screw, and safety factors.
Problem Statement:
The lead screw is to withstand the force of 400 N applied to the lever.
My goal is to determine the allowable working stress on the lead screw.
The stress due to the force applied to the lever should not exceed the
yield strength of the screw’s material. Allowable stress<Syt

1.2.2. Assumptions
Constraints are represented on the base of the fixed jaw, movable and fixed jaws
with the screw, and screw with the lever.
Fixed jaw (The fixed jaw is fixed and supported on the base).
Fixed jaw and the lead screw (Screw).
Fixed jaw and Movable jaw (Frictionless support).
Movable jaw and the screw (No separation, screw-free to rotate).
Screw and lever (Frictionless support).
Due to the supports and the applied force, I expect allowable stress on the screw
and deformation.
1.2.3. Boundary conditions
I will apply a point load of 400 N on the end of the lever.
The Fixed jaw is fixed on the table.
1.2.4. Results
Tensile stress.
Total deformation.
Safety factor.
Von Mises Stress
Shear stress.
