Narrative Report from the 10 Day Work Exposure
As the date of our work immersion come to life, so is my mixed emotion.
Upon arriving at the Cebu City Health, I was awestruck to see doctors of medicine
during the flag ceremony. Right then, we were introduced to Sir Amil F. Opigal, he
frontrows the administrative service division and will be the one to designate us. He
asked us several questions about the City Health and with shaking knees, I was able to
express my ideas with the best that I can. Not knowing that he is actually doing the
orientation-- wherein the next moment, he already gave us set of rules to be followed.
One of the biggest rule he bestowed on us is to never laugh at patients-- to respect
them and to welcome all kinds of patients coming from different walk of life.
Outpatient Department (OPD) is where we are assigned to. We were eventually
introduced to the workers we will be working with. This includes 2 registered nurse
namely: Ma'am Durinda Magasocol, she is already 33 years in the service and Ma'am
Lilia Aleman. We also have an assisting nurse and a philhealth encoder namely Ma'am
Cheryl Go and Ma'am Clarisse Borces consecutively. Our two doctors of medicine, Dr.
Janelyn O. Aro and our supervisor, Dr. Judilbeth R. Buenaventura.
We were then taught on how to use the weighing scale, the stethoscope-- which the
doctors kept in touch with. It is an instrument used to listen to the heartbeat of an
individual and also the sphygmomanometer-- a device used to read the blood pressure
of patients. Right after, we were taught on the parts and functions of the two medical
instruments used in getting the BP. The last stage of introduction level is when we were
taught on how to get BP's. One thing I learned is that it may look simple to do, but it is
actually elaborate.
The next part of our immersion would be the part of observation. Upon learning on how
to get blood pressure, it is then the opportunity to acquire more through observation. It
is through this process that I learn on the different circumstances of people going in and
out of our department. Aside from this, I pushed myself to observe the whole circulation
of my area. There are various services being offered there including health
consultations and releasing of medical certificate. Everything that is under the common
illnesses of people such as hypertension, diabetes and fever is admitted here. Also
providing or changing of medicines can be cater for free.
The last and final part is the application period-- the time to apply all the basic
knowledge gained. From the first day, I welcome the patients going in the department
and ask for their information. These informations are used to hold as the record of the
patient and to properly provide them with their queries. The challenge here is that
different patients have different personalities and approaching them in a way of making
them comfortable is a step to take.
Next we commonly do is get the blood pressure of the clients. On the second day of our
work deployment, I already know how to get the BP but whenever there is a patient that
needs it, fear wraps me and looking at the patient's eyes, I am truly afraid to try. It is
during the third day that I gain confidence to try. Upon inflating the cuff surrounding the
patients arm, I honestly find it hard to focus on my patient's heartbeat since it is my
heartbeat that I could hear more. Luckily, with the help of the sphygmomanometer and
stethoscope, I was able to declare the patient's blood pressure correctly
On the other hand, our task would sometimes involve accompanying patients to the
department they are referred to such as the TB Dots office, the hygiene services, field
division programs and the environmental division wherein the issuance of receipts
happen. It is also a way of familiarizing the different department found in the Cebu City
Health.
Since then, our day of immersion is all kind of the same. On our last day, I thought that
everything would went as usual but it became as a kind of adrenaline rush when a 1
year old patient is brought to our area-- she is experiencing fever for at least 3 days and
her temperature is 39.7 C. The grandmother of the patient was quickly recommended to
have laboratory testing. Another moment had passed when the grandmother with the
patient came back. The patient has complications already due to high fever and skin
turns to gray. Vital signs were eventually checked including the response of the eyes
and foot when poked. Immediately, sponge bath was performed unto the patient with
the electric fan on. A minute had passed when the baby finally cried-- a sign that the
first aid applied is effective. Ambulance was then called since Dr. Buenaventura stated
that the patient should be hospitalized since the patient is only 1 year old and to
undergo proper observation and medication by a doctor.
"A MOMENT THAT BECOMES A MEMORY
A Reflection from the 10 Day Work Immersion
Life as cliché it could be, has been said to be like a book of a person. A book consisting
of different chapters-- lessons to be heed and moments to be cherished. Until one
learns to turn the page, one will unfold what life brings after.
As I was deployed for the work immersion at the Cebu City Health, I was honestly
nervous yet determined, afraid yet I tried to be brave. Meeting doctors of medicine,
nurses and patients and communicating with them truly equipped me as how to face
the real world. It is challenging at first as how to conquer myself to go beyond what is
the most comforting space for me but as a day ends, I always motivate myself to
improve something than the previous ones.
When another day comes and whenever the door opens and the patients come in
seeking for consultation, I really feel grateful to help. My workplace indeed taught me
how to be kind and how to properly treat different patients with different personalities
and stories. Most especially, my area of specialization trained me to never be ashamed
of disclosing myself to my patients not only as a way of establishing good relationship
with them but also as a way of honoring the opportunity to meet them.
Lastly, there I truly learned the value of health. It is like watching at the windows of life
and seeing different stories converging at one point--- giving me a lesson to take good
care of my health and to consider it as the greatest wealth I could ever achieve. Far
more than ever imagined, the heartwarming scenes out there truly help me grow as an
individual -- by learning the lesson of compassion, it made me realize that all of us can
establish a home far beyond where we dwell.
It is truly a humbling experience for me to have such opportunity to make patients smile
inspite of their circumstances and be able to help-- to see them walk out of the door and
say thank you. It is truly a moment and a memory that I will upbring in a lifetime.
Interviewing the patients on her personal information for the department to hold as her
record. The data gathered will then be used in taking the patient's health history and to
provide her queries.
Getting the blood pressure of the patient to be written on his record and as a way of
addressing his health issues or providing his query. Some patients are required to
undergo this process to also know the effects of hypertension tablets they are taking in
and to provide changing of medicines when necessary.
This is during our practice in getting the blood pressure using the spygmomanometer
and stethoscope. Together with Mr. Jomar Supangan, we are harnessing on how get
blood pressure from patients.
Getting the weight of the patient as it is included in the personal information record of
the department. In some instances, the patient's weight is used as the basis of
medicines to be given.
Writing of personal information slips to be used in assessing the patient's information.
Getting the temperature of patient with Ms. Jeraldine Iglesias. Most of the time, getting
the temperature is administered to children. This task may be easy for us on some
patient but oftentimes, it also requires long patience to those misbehaving patient.
