Sarsuelas are usually written in colloquial

prose containing anywhere between one and five
acts. Musical performances are woven in to the
acts, delivery an exciting story that ties the acts
together in an entertaining and dramatic form.
The story often follows a Filipino character in a
love story while engaging several conflicts relating
to social, political, economic or cultural issues.
These issues were often associated with the
Spanish Period and Filipino revolution. The
sarsuwela is also called, sarsuela, zarzuela,
sarsuelet, drama Lirico, operetta, sarsuyla, dulang
hinonihan, dulang inawitan or dulang may awit in
the various languages of the country.
http://www.himig.com.ph-walang-sugat.jpg
(Tiongson,2010)

Sarsuela is a form of theater unique to the Philippines, however, it wasn’t

until the Spanish colonization when Spanish performers introduced Zarzuelas to
the nation and they quickly made it their own. In addition to having roots in the
Spanish genre, Filipinos also drew inspiration from the local sainete. The sainete
was a comedy skit that used music as an intermission to the long comedies of the
19th century. Although the local sainete has impacted sarsuwela’s, the Spanish
zarzuelas are the real inspiration behind the Filipino art form.

In 1869, after the opening of the Suez Canal that allowed the Spanish much
easier access to the Philippine Islands theater really began to take off. This meant
that in addition to bringing more troupes, the Spanish also sent over playwrights
and acting groups to perform for the Spanish population residing in the
Philippines. This inspired many Filipinos to begin writing their own form of
zarzuelas.

At first, they were written and performed in Spanish, then Filipinos began to
write them in Tagalog, but they would still be performed in Spanish. Finally, as the
theatrical form became popular among the Filipino community, they started to
perform in their national language.

In 1901 American colonization began and unlike the Spanish culture that
did not attempt to assimilate the population, American school teachers came over
and introduced the Filipino education to the English language. Teachers used
American plays and movies to teach their students about English and this inspired
the works of future playwrights. The American Dream became the quintessential
plot of most plays being written in both English and Tagalog up until the 1960’s.
(Fernandez, 2000).

Shadow Puppetry

Shadow Puppetry or
Shadow Play is an
ancient art form that
uses flat, expressed
figures to produce cut—
out figures which are
held together by sticks
and sometimes, thread,
to create movement,
which are shown
behind a thin layer of
cloth or screen and a

cambodian-shadow-puppets.htm
Sometimes, details of the puppets are made by including colored translucent
papers like cellophane and can create various effects depending on the source of
light and the kind of movement the puppets make. Shadow play is popular among
various cultures and countries, and has a long history of tradition among
Southeast Asian countries, especially in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and
Cambodia, but the known origin was from a Chinese legend that traces Shadow
Theater or puppetry when a court magician comforted a gloomy emperor by
“conjuring up” his departed wife.

The magician had merely shown the emperor a shadow, with the aid of a
small flame and a thin cloth screen. Shadow puppetry is considered as an ancient
art form of storytelling and entertainment and has evolved with many techniques
and process of creating the puppets and the stage where the artists showcase the
puppets. It is a popular form of entertainment among children and adults both,
with the variety of figures one can make, and the fluidity, choreography and
technical aspect of making the puppets move, it is indeed a great form of visual art.

community to commemorate an event or acknowledge an icon which became the
source of inspiration, identity, or origin. It also showcases Filipino values such as
industry, cooperation and unity. The celebration is performed along the streets as
dancers performed rhythmical movements accompanied by canned or indigenous
musical instruments. The dance culminates in a grand presentation where dancers
display their skills with prowess, excellent choreography and colorful props in full
tapestry.

After learning the proper ways to prevent and control non-communicable

diseases, putting it to practice must be done. In this module, you will learn how to
make your own self-monitoring plan with proper activities and exercises.

Self-monitoring skills are competencies that will help us assess when we are
healthy or sick. It is important that we are familiar with the normal condition of our
bodies so that we can detect at once when something is wrong. It is also important
that we have information, such as our vaccination record, to ensure the health,
safety, and well-being to provide preventive measures.

Why is it important for us to monitor our daily activities? If we want to become

healthy, or if we want to keep ourselves away from these non-communicable
diseases, we must learn this so called self-monitoring skills. Most students like you
feel like they have all the energy in the world that’s why they often do whatever they
want to do, forgetting the consequences of their actions already. From the moment
you wake up until the time you will go back to bed at night, you should always
remember to take good care of your health. Pray, eat healthy foods, do household
chores, clean your environment, clean your body, exercise, have some family
bonding and sleep on time.

Applying what you learned in the previous module will of great help for you in
this current module. As a grade 7 learner, you already know the basics of health
care, as to what is right and wrong for our health. Monitoring ones blood pressure,
exercising, maintaining a healthy body, clean environment and calm mind, avoiding
foods and drink that destroys our health, having enough sleep, and having some
time to relax and laugh are just few of the things you need to check when you do
self-monitoring.

“16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit
dwells in your midst? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that
person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.” 1 Corinthians
3:16-17 NIV
