Drug Study Atropine

Atropine is an anticholinergic drug that works by blocking acetylcholine receptors. It has several indications including organophosphate poisoning, bradycardia, and as an anti-sialagogue. Atropine should not be given to patients with hyperthyroidism, myasthenia gravis, closed angle glaucoma, or coronary artery disease. Common side effects include dry mouth, blurred vision, tachycardia, flushing, and constipation. Nurses must monitor for these side effects and changes in vital signs when administering atropine.
