a stepping stone for more general assemblies annually and pulling more

4
Introduction to the 1st Edition of
CAMSA GA: Sessions

The 1st CAMSA General Assembly (GA) was a platform that brought
together, medical students from all around the country for Capacity
Building, Academic Exchange and networking of among future
physicians. The GA is also the highest authority and decision-making
body of the association and these functions were exercised during
this first GA.

Theme event : ‘The Role of Cameroon Medical Students in Raising

Their Educational and Health Systems to Meet Global Trends’

Rationale : Over the years, Cameroon has witnessed a rapid growth

in the number of medical schools with over 500 medical doctors
graduating every year. However, there’s still a large gap between our
current medical education and up-to-date global medical education
standards. Given the continuous changes in medical education and
health care practices around the world, it is important for medical
students in Cameroon not to be left behind. Hence, capacity building
sessions and conference under this theme shall equip our future
medical doctors with knowledge and skills to challenge the status
quo for better health care practices in our beloved country.

Participant’s Feedbacks and take
home messages

People Centered Care focuses on how to meet the health

needs of the population at the community level in health
literacy aspects meanwhile patient centered care focuses
on using individualised approach to meet patients needs in
diagnosis and treatment aspects.
People Centered Care emphasizes on prevention while patient
centered care put emphasis on curative measures.

Medical students of the 21st century should promote people

centered care while learning the diagnosis and treatment of
diseases in school. We should break the box!!!

That there’s a difference between people centered care and

patients centered care according to the WHO

We should focus more on people centered care as this is the

best holistic approach to health care in our community.

Use what you know to serve your country and serve the
patient. Empathy. Holistic care of a person.

I think we should go for patient’s center care, this is the best

because we need to humanize medicine and be sensitive to

57
patent’s needs.
Participant’s Feedbacks and take
home messages

Learnt about PCC and what medical students are to do to

achieve good PCC, as medical students we can be very active
in the implementation of people centered care and patient
centered care by communicating with the patient and given
them clear information about their disease and how they can
be actively involved in their treatment and recovery process.

Universal Health Coverage is not only a concern for the

government. Medical students as well have a role to play by
getting well informed about it.

Conscious of the out of pocket model of Cameroon health

system, medical students should prescribe the right
medications sold at affordable prices to patients.

People Centered Care emphasis on prevention and patient

centered care put emphasis on curative measures. Medical
students of the 21st century should promote people centered
care while learning the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in
school.

Medical practitioners should create a client service atmosphere

and empathise more with patients.

We should break the box. Let’s Humanise our care to patients,

58
We have to be more patient centered.
Participant’s Feedbacks and take
home messages

Every medical student should understand that patients are not

just patients but they are also human beings seeking for help
and get emotions which play a key role in our profession.

For universal health coverage to be a reality, we need to start at

the lowest level to build something, that’s the districts.

The more you invest in health care, the better the economy of
our country will be.

Medical students at their own level, can also contribute to

promote universal health coverage, we should not always
wait for the government to initiate such programs, we are the
leaders of tomorrow and we should take our responsibility.

Use what you know to serve your country and serve the
patient. Empathy. Holistic care of a pe Medical students should
synthesise more to those who don’t know about health systems
and work to get a better health coverage system. rson.

To attain university health coverage in Cameroon we must all

work together and established trusted institutions which can
take care of the basic health needs of everything such as local

59
solidarity funds.
Participant’s Feedbacks and take
home messages

Universal health coverage in Cameroon is a big issue with

several contributing factors especially finance and awareness.
If it has to be tackled, the best way is to begin at the
community level before going national.

Patient compliance to treatment, and recovery as a whole, is

greatly improved when we show the patient that he has a place
to know about his treatment, understand why actions are done
and to ask questions.

People Centered Care focuses on how to meet the health

needs of the population at the community level ie health
literacy aspects meanwhile patient centered care focuses
on using individualised approach to meet patients needs ie
diagnosis and treatment aspects.

The quality of the medical training that medical students receive

is determined by how engaged these students are in developing
themselves e.g. by being proactive, beginning research and writing
scientific articles, volunteering, carrying out community service by
practicing preventive health care and just being very serious with
studies. All these before getting on the field would have built solid
skills and good knowledge of the practice.

CAMSA is worth existing and is great forum to continuously

60
educate, empower medical students so they actively contribute
to the improvement of healthcare delivery in Cameroon.
Recommendations

I will love for many more sessionss of presentation in the

Activity Fair and more schools to be represented. I will
recommend the others medical school to get involve.

To ensure early sensitisation and a maximum of medical

schools should be represented next time. Why not all medical
schools?

People Centered Care focuses on how to meet the health

needs of the population at the community level ie health
literacy aspects meanwhile patient centered care focuses
on using individualised approach to meet patients needs ie
diagnosis and treatment aspects.

Sessions should be prepared well enough ahead of time. Reports

should be well written on pdf version submitted ahead of time and
writen summary of report on ppt should be done ahead of time.

I suggest that all the other medical students should follow the
examples of the schools which brilliantly tried theirs best.

A fully committed Organising Committee is my hope for the

future Let’s have few who are committed than many with only few
committed. Let’s judiciously choose the Organising Committee for
the 2nd General Assembly.

We should work on our social media campaign earlier to get

more students nationwide.
