Problem Set#1
ISOTOPES

Name:
Course & Section:

I. Write your answers and solutions on a clean long bond paper.

1. Silicon is widely used in the semiconductor industry. Its isotopes and abundance are: Si-28 (27.977
amu & 92.34%), Si-29 (28.977 amu & 4.70%), and Si-30 (29.974 amu & 2.96%). What is the average
atomic mass of silicon?
2. Cu (63.546 amu) has two naturally occurring isotopes. Cu-63 has an atomic mass of 62.9296 amu
and an abundance of 69.17%. What is the atomic mass of the second isotope?
3. Mg (24.305 amu) consists of three isotopes with masses 23.9850 amu, 24.9858 amu, and 25.9826
amu. The abundance of the middle isotope is 10.0%. What is the percent abundance of the first
isotope (23.9850 amu)?
