Chapter 1
The Problem and Its Background
Introduction
Markers play an important role in a student’s life. Markers are used for writing
reports, used to label notebooks, etc. and sometimes used in calligraphy. With the infinite
use of markers, producers cannot exactly tell the amount of supply needed by the
consumers or users.
Usually, the ink of the markers is made from chemical materials such as
polyester, petroleum synthetic, etc. These kinds of materials are usually harmful to the
health of the users and also to the health of the environment.
The said chemicals used in markers can cause skin problems like rashes, itching,
redness, eczema and dermatitis. It can also cause fungal or bacterial infection.
This being harmful to the environment gave an idea to some researchers to
perform a research on what could possibly be an alternative ingredient to create ink for
markers. The researchers taught of using Java Plum because of its attractive color and it
is not that popular to people in this generation, and they would like to reintroduce it to
them.
Java Plum has many benefits to humans which make it interesting to make a
marker out of it. Java Plum are low on calories, which makes them the perfect healthy

snack. It also contains bioactive phytochemicals that lessen the risk of liver disease.
They’re also known to be effective in treatment of diabetes
Statement of the Problem
General Problem: The ink of markers made out of Java Plum (Syzgium cumini)
is an alternative component to create ink for whiteboard markers
Specific Problem:
1. What does Java Plum contain to make it an alternative ink for markers?
2. What percent of the Java Plum mixture can yield the best ink?
3. What’s the difference between a regular ink of a marker and an ink of a
marker that made out of Java Plum?
Significance of the Study
Due to the lack of supply of markers, and the harmful components of it,
researchers wants to conduct a research on what could possibly be an alternative
ingredient to create ink for makers. Researchers aim to use an eco-friendly component to
create an alternative ink for markers. By using Java Plum, it’s a great way to reintroduce
the fruit to many people as it was not that popular in these days.

Making or finding an alternative ingredient for ink markers is a good way to
prevent unwanted effects of the chemical materials used in a regular marker. Doing this
research would also introduce to the public an alternative source of ink for markers that is
beneficial to both humans and nature.
Hypotheses
Ho: Java Plum (Syzgium cumini) could not be an alternative ink for markers
Ha: Java Plum (Syzgium cumini) could be an alternative ink for markers
Scope and Delimitation
To test the experiment, participants can be teachers and students from Pateros
Catholic School as they always use whiteboard markers in teaching and learning. The
marker will be tested by 20 teachers and 20 students from the Junior High School
Department.
Definition of Terms
1. Polyester: a synthetic resin in which the polymer units are linked by ester
groups, used chiefly to make synthetic textile fibers.
2. Petroleum Synthetic: Synthetic oil is a lubricant consisting of chemical
compounds that are artificially made. Synthetic lubricants can be

manufactured using chemically modified petroleum components rather
than whole crude oil.
3. Pigment: the natural coloring matter of animal or plant tissue.
4. Eco-Friendly: not harmful to the environment
