DRUG STUDY Name of Drug Propylthiouracil Mechanism of Action Propylthiouracil inhibits the production of thyroid hormones by preventing iodine
from being oxidized in the thyroid gland. It also blocks the peripheral deiodination of thyroxine to triiodothyronine. Dosage Indications Contraindications Adverse Reaction Nursing alert Pregnant women may need less drug as pregnancy progresses. Give drug with meals to reduce adverse GI reactions. Watch for signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism (unexplained weight gain, fatigue, cold intolerance). Warn patient to report fever, sore throat, mouth sores, and skin eruptions. Tell patient to report unusual bleeding or bruising. Monitor CBC periodically to detect impending leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and agranulocytosis. Stop drug and notify prescriber if severe rash develops or cervical lymph nodes

Mild leukopenia, Hypersensiti lupus-like syndrome, cutaneous vasculitis, vity to drug thrombocytopenia, Pregnancy skin rash, urticaria, Lactation arthralgia, fever, GI discomfort, vomiting, and, headache. Potentially Fatal: Agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, liver injury and liver failure.
Propranolol
Propranolol competitively blocks 1- and 2-receptors resulting to decreased heart rate myocardial contractility, BP and myocardial oxygen demand. It only possesses membranestabilising properties.
10-40 mg, 3-4 times daily.

Sinus bradycardia, cardiogenic shock, pulmonary edema, severe hyperactive airway disease, compensated cardiac failure, Raynaud's disease, hypoglycemia, severe hemorrhage, metabolic acidosis, severe peripheral arterial disease, 2nd or 3rd degree heart block, Pregnancy (2nd and 3rd trimesters).
Cold extremities, insomnia, fatigue, dizziness, vivid dreams, lassitude, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, anorexia, stomach discomfort, impotence, weakness, paresthesia, wheezing, pharyngitis, bronchospasm, CNS disturbances at higher doses and mood alterations, thrombocytopenic purpura, agranulocytosis, nonthrombocytopenic purpura, thrombocytopenia, depression, confusion, cognitive dysfunction, hallucinations. Potentially Fatal: Heart failure, heart block and bronchospasm.
enlarge. Always check apical pulse before giving drug. Instruct patient to take drug with food. Food may increase absorption of propranolol. Tell patient not to stop drug suddenly because this can worsen chest pain and trigger a heart attack. Caution patient to continue taking this drug as prescribed, even when hes feeling well. Compliance may be improved by giving drug twice daily or as extended-release capsules.
