SECTION D CASE STUDIES 20 MARKS

There are two (2) Case Studies in this question. Answer the questions related to both the
Case Studies.

Case Study 1 (10 marks)

Andrew is a 12-year-old student in a primary school. When he was in the 6th grade, other
students started calling him “gay.” From 6th grade on, the harassment became more
frequent and severe. By 7th grade, verbal abuse was a constant occurrence. Students
regularly called him “fag” and “queer.” Andrew was afraid to use the restroom or be in the
locker room. Andrew’s mother and close friends report that Andrew’s teachers and other
school officials were aware that Andrew was being bullied. After years of abuse, Andrew
writes a letter to his friend that says he feels like he can’t go on with all of the abuse and
fear that he experiences. The letter is found by a parent at the school. The parent is an
acquaintance of yours and talks to you about his concerns regarding Andrew. He wants to
get your input on this situation.

Analyze the case study and answer the following questions based on the knowledge
achieved from this course:

Case Study 2 (10 marks)

Teacher-Student Relationship

Mrs. K is a high school economics teacher whose husband recently divorced her. During a
lesson one day, Mrs. K breaks down emotionally in front of her class. In an attempt to calm the
students, she explains her emotional state to her students and discusses the end of her
marriage. After school that day, a male student visits Mrs. K to see if she has recovered. The
student explains that his parents are also divorcing and he understands her feelings. The
student begins stopping in to see Mrs. K more frequently and the pair begins spending more
time outside of class supporting each other. Mrs. K's colleagues start to become suspicious of
her relationship with the student and report the teacher's actions to their principal.

associated with the quality of education in general and students’ learning outcomes in
particular.”

Critically analyze the above statement and write an essay discussing the following:
 The significance of ethics and morality in regards to the teaching profession.
 Your opinion on how teacher quality is associated with the quality of education in general and
students’ learning outcomes.
 How teacher quality can be improved in our country Fiji?
 The ways in which values and ethics can improve teaching and learning standards in Fiji.

“Integrity is the integration of outward actions and inner values. A person of integrity is the
same on the outside and on the inside.” Anil Sinha

 Explain the term ‘Academic Integrity’.


 What is the importance of it in the education system?
 Discuss the forms of ‘Academic dishonesty’ that are common today.
 Suggest ways in which academic dishonesty can be curbed in our educational institutions.

Question 3

Counseling generally refers to the provision of assistance or guidance that eventually helps
solve personal, social or mental problems. A professional individual normally administers it. It
normally takes a number of forms including individual counseling, group counseling, and
couples counseling.

Using the knowledge gained from this unit, write an essay on guidance and counselling in Fiji
schools. Include the following in your discussion:

- Explain the difference between counseling and guidance counseling. Give examples.
- Discuss the current status of guidance and counseling in schools in Fiji
-Analyze the steps to be followed in ‘Face to Face’ counseling.
- Discuss the importance of the ‘Termination’ phase in counselling.
