Functions of Proteins

Proteins serve several important functions in the body: 1. They repair worn-out tissues by breaking down into amino acids that rebuild tissues damaged from normal wear and tear. 2. Proteins break down into amino acids that act as building blocks to build new tissue, especially muscle tissue after exercise. 3. Proteins take longer to break down and digest than carbohydrates, providing a slower release of energy and helping to increase metabolism. 4. Proteins contribute to essential body secretions like hormones, enzymes, antibodies, and neurotransmitters that regulate important biological processes.

FUNCTIONS OF PROTEINS:

 Repair worn-out body tissues

Our body's protein tissues wear out on a regular basis and must be
repaired and replaced. This replacement process is accomplished by
eating foods that contain protein. So after we eat foods that contains
protein, the digestive system breaks it down into a brand new supply of
amino acids that become the building blocks that are used in repairing
and replacing those that are worn out.

 Build new tissue

The body breaks down consumed protein into amino acids, and absorbs
[Link] is made up of amino acids, which act like building blocks for
the body. When we eat protein for example after exercising, protein gives
our muscles the amino acids necessary for repair and rebuild.

 Source of heat and energy

Proteins consist of units called amino acids, strung together in complex
formations. Because proteins are complex molecules, the body takes
longer to break them down. As a result, they are a much slower and
longer-lasting source of energy than carbohydrates. Proteins has a higher
thermic effect which tends to increase our body metabolism. It takes
longer time to get digested in the body and that is why our body has to
work harder to break it down, thus spending more energy and burning
more calories.

 Contributes to numerous essential body secretions

Protein secretion is a universal biological process occurring in all
organisms. Secreted proteins such as hormones, digestive enzymes,
neurotransmitters as well as antibodies, play vital regulatory roles in
various biological activities such as reproduction, digestion, nerve
conduction and immunization.

 Maintenance of normal osmotic relations

Proteins regulate body processes to maintain fluid balance. Proteins in the
blood help maintain the body's fluid balance by keeping water in the
blood. Blood proteins have the ability to attract and keep fluid in the
bloodstream. Albumin and globulin

Why is it important to maintain fluid balance?

 Maintenance of an adequate fluid balance is vital to
health. Inadequate fluid intake or excess can lead to dehydration.
It also lubricates our joints, helps our digestive system function
and keeps our skin healthy.
