INTRODUCTION
When we’re feeling stressed or out of touch, many of us
instinctively go for walks. We search for forests, parks, beaches,
and country roads to feel more at peace connected to nature.
Given that fact, it’s no surprise that human well-being is
intrinsically linked to the environment’s health. About 24% of
global human deaths are caused, directly or indirectly, by
avoidable environmental factors1. To live long and healthy
lives, we need and deserve unpolluted air to breathe, clean
water to drink, and live in places free of toxic substances.
“As the global population grows and we begin to see the long-
term consequences of excessive energy use and industrial
growth, we must prevent further damage. It is our job to
ensure our future generations have healthy places to live and
minimize our damage to the earth’s biodiverse ecosystems.”
(Personal Communication: E.Salusalu-Agricultural Officer Tvni)
For businesses, sustainability means running a business
through sustainable practices and securing future growth
potential without causing too much damage to the
environment.
Importance Of Environmental Sustainability
According to the U.N Environment Programme2, environmental
sustainability involves making life choices that ensure an equal,
if not better, way of life for future generations.
In simple terms, environmental sustainability is the practice of
interacting with the planet responsibly. We do it to avoid
depleting natural resources and compromising the future
generation’s ability to meet their daily needs.
“Unless the world acts decisively to begin addressing the
greatest challenge of our age, then the Pacific, as we know it, is
doomed,” – Frank Bainimarama, COP23 President, Fijian Prime
Minister and Chairman of the TLTB Board of Trustees.
Environmental sustainability aims to improve the quality of
human life without putting unnecessary strain on the earth's
supporting ecosystems. It’s about creating an equilibrium
between consumerist human culture and the living world. We
can do this by living in a way that doesn’t waste or
unnecessarily deplete natural resources.
How To Practice Eco-Friendly Methods
Everyday
In our daily activities, we take actions that in one way or
another poses an impact on the environment. From washing
clothes, cooking to cleaning, there’s a lot more we can do to
live more sustainable and have a positive impact on the
environment. In the end, we will be able to leave this world a
better place than we found it.
1. Reducing Meat Consumption
By reducing meat consumption, you save the planet more- a
good percentage of the earth’s surface is used for livestock
rearing.
Deforestation widely occurs for the sole purpose of getting land
for keeping our livestock. Consequently, there is an emission of
methane from cows and the use of fertilizers. Combined they
bring about greenhouse gas emission.
Likewise, livestock rearing largely contributes to water pollution
through rivers and streams.
2. Be Economic with Paper
In the current digital world, we can reduce paper usage by
storing data in files on our computers rather than printing them
out on paper - we eventually save on the environment. Another
way is by using only a small portion of paper by tearing it from
the corner instead of scribbling in the middle.
The remaining part of the paper can be used for writing
something else. By using less paper, we save a good amount of
energy used in paper production, the number of trees cut down
yearly and actually live green.
3. Recycle Waste
Most of the appliances we use at home end up in landfills
which have negative environmental factors. To minimize the
amount of waste we take to the landfills, we should recycle
most of it.
For example, we can recycle and reuse paper, plastic, glass or
metal. Before recycling, one should know how to recycle as per
the materials they are made of, separate them and recycle
them according to their categories.
Almost all paper products can be recycled apart from those that
have plastic or metal components. Likewise, there are types of
plastics that can be recycled and types that cannot be recycled.
Plastics that contain Polystrene Terephthalate like water bottles
can be recycled while those with the presence of Polyvinyl
Chloride like clear plastic food wrappings cannot be recycled.
4. Unplug All Electric Device when not in Use
Another overlooked way of things that can easily be done at
home to reduce electricity bills and save the environment is by
unplugging electric devices. Some of the devices like television
sets, personal computers, air dryers and electrical kettles keep
on sucking energy and consequently your wallet.
When these devices are switched off, they still allow a small
flow of electricity. Therefore, the best way to save is by
unplugging them.
5. Start a Home Garden.
People should try and grow their own edible herbs by planting
seeds in pots or window sills. A small area can be useful in
providing space for fruits and vegetables.
Environmental Problems in Fiji.
Fiji is a large archipelago with diverse landscapes and climate.
More than 300 islands are scattered over 1.3 million square
kilometers of ocean. The islands are characterized by diverse
ecosystems including significant areas of natural forest,
freshwater, and coastal and marine life.
Since independence in 1970, many positive achievements have
occurred in the pursuit of environmentally sustainable
development. However, some activities in support of economic
and social development have disturbed and in some instances,
destroyed the natural environment. Nevertheless, the need to
build healthy ecosystems, and resilience to the growing impacts
of climate change and climate variability, has been recognized.
Fiji faces environmental challenges related to the degradation
of land resources, increased risk of flooding and inundation to
coastal settlements as an impact of climate change,
unsustainable exploitation of marine resources, and the
environmental impact of urbanization which undermines
people's quality of life.
Impacts Of Environmental Sustainability on:
Businesses In Fiji:
Reducing the Environmental impact of businesses will improve
the sustainability of businesses. This is in the sense that the less
dependent business are on resources, competitors will have
ways to deal with rising costs caused by climate change thus
leading to a greater chance of long-term success.
Agriculture In Fiji:
Agriculture contributes to a large number of environmental
issues that cause environmental degradation including climate
change, deforestation, bio diversity, irrigation problems,
pollutants, soil degradation and waste.
Tourism Industry:
Over utilization by the tourism industry can put enormous pressure on
an area and lead to impacts such as soil erosion, increased pollution,
discharges into the sea, natural habitat loss, increased habitat loss,
increased pressure on endangered species and heightened vulnerability
to forest fires.
Environmental Sustainability Efforts in Fiji:
1. Pearl Farming
A visit to a Fijian pearl farm provides proof that this most luxurious of
jewellery goes hand in hand with sustainable business practices and marine
conservation. Fiji's pearl industry consists of small family-run farms based
mainly around Savusavu on the island of Vanua Levu.
Pearl oysters, which are filter feeders, are a good barometer of sea quality.
Tours from Savusavu give the chance to see the hatcheries, as well as a
local giant clam reserve, and learn how farming techniques preserve not
just wild oyster stocks but also help wider coral reef conservation. Its
possible to snorkel among the ropes of growing oysters and, twice a year in
April/May and October/November see both ends of the farming process,
from the intricate work of seeding the pearls to harvesting the fully-grown
oysters.
2. Talanoa Treks
Tourism works best when it is rooted in its host communities. Viti
Levu-based Talanoa Treks understand this, and have spent years
partnering with host villages across the island to offer the best in
hiking and village tourism. Small group treks are led through
dramatic hills and forests of the island's interior, including a
chance to hike up Mt Tomanivi, Fiji's highest mountain, as part of
their unique 'Three Peak Challenge'.
Hiking is only part of the tour however, as guides are chosen from
four host villages, who work with Talanoa to invite visitors into
their communities as equals for genuine cultural exchanges.
3. Mamanuca Environment Society
One of Fiji's most active conservation organisations is the Mamanuca
Environment Society (MES), founded by a consortium of local resorts to
encourage protection of the island environment. Visitors to the
Mamanucas are encouraged to get involved. The NGO runs reef check
surveys and turtle conservation programmes, both of which accept
volunteers. Divers can get further involved in reef conservation, from coral
transplanting to helping remove the invasive crown-of-thorns starfish.
In addition to this, MES runs environmental and waste management
awareness programmes at resorts and in local communities. They also run a
dry forest restoration project, while its water analysis project continues to
provide scientific data on the health of the sea that the villages, resorts and
fishing communities all depend on.
4. Mangrove Restoration
Fiji has the third largest extent of mangroves in the Pacific region but these
important ecosystems are under continuous threat. They serve both as fish
nurseries as well as coastal protection against increasingly turbulent
climate change-driven weather systems.
On several islands, local environmental organisations and resorts have
partnered to help restore these important wetlands. On Viti Levu's
southern coast, the Auberge Nanuku has its own mangrove nursery,
overseen by the resort's resident marine biologist. Guests are encouraged
to get involved with planting. At Barefoot Manta in the Yasawas, another
nursery raises juvenile plants as part of a shoreline restoration project. The
resort also has coral planting beds, as well as reintroducing giant clams to
improve reef health offshore.
Importance of Eco Friendly Practices
Lower Costs
Eco-friendly products may seem to be more expensive, but long-
term they are actually more cost efficient. Eco-friendly products tend
to last much longer. These products are typically made from recycled
materials and are sturdy, withstanding most drops, kicks, and
dishwashers. Eco-friendly products may have a larger sticker price,
but since they last longer, it is an investment that will pay off.
Healthier Lifestyle
Along with the eco-friendly benefits, there are also personal
benefits that coincide with using all-natural products. Plastics, for
example, are known to have BPA, lead, and other harmful
chemicals that can cause many different illnesses and diseases in
both children and adults. For adults, the risks include diabetes,
heart disease, autoimmune diseases, and reproductive system
abnormalities. For children, it can cause premature puberty,
diabetes, stunted growth, and autoimmune disorders. Eco-
friendly, all-natural products ensure safety from all dangerous
chemicals, and allows families to avoid risky additives that can
cause any of these issues. Using eco-friendly products improves
quality of life in terms of mortality, age, diseases, and illnesses.
They ensure the safety of families and the planet.
Data Analysis
What time do you usually turn the lights off?
Before 7pm
8pm- 9pm
After 10pm
9pm- 10pm
As shown in the chart, a huge number
listed 9-10pm and after 10pm a daily lights-off time due to late night studying,
reading or watching movies, while the other minority chose before 7pm and
8-9pm.
Are you aware of the effects of Global Warming around us?
14%
YES
NO
86%
It is shown in
the graph that a majority are aware of the changes happening around us due to
global warming and the few people who are not most likely have not been been
well informed on what is happening around the world.
Do you throw away garbage where there aren’t any rubbish
bins?
15%
NO
YES
85%
Most people
report that they do not throw garbage where rubbish bins aren’t provided and
opt to take it home or dispose of it where they rightfully should- however the few
people who said otherwise do it out of ignorance.
Is it possible to reduce the use of electricity, gas and tap water
in our household in the future?
5%
YES
NO
95%
As shown in the
chart ,a majority agreed that it is indeed possible to reduce the use of electricity,
gas and tap water and very few thought otherwise.
RECOMMENDATIONS
After analyzing questionnaires, personal
interviews and tons of research, it may be said
that despite the challenges of going about
preventative measures that people are
incorporating day after day, we cannot
continue moving forward without
implementing better strategies to take care of
our planet.
Yet, we are more than lucky that leaders of the
commercial real estate and tourism industries
did not leave aside their efforts to implement
sustainable practices, with the aim of
continuing to develop their activity without
compromising the future of the natural
resources that allow it. Benefits are countless:
preserving the world for future generations,
assuming a role that consumers expect in the
brands and products they acquire and, last but
not least, generating savings. That’s right,
implementing environmentally friendly
behaviours, such as investing in eco-friendly
technology and trying to cut off plastic, allows
companies to save money while making a
difference.
CONCLUSION
It has been concluded that even though efforts
are being put into place to reduce electricity,
gas and water- many are still uneducated on
the changes and effects of Global Warming
taking place all over the world.
