Gagne's Nine Events

This document provides a teaching sequence for a 9th grade science lesson with the objective of students being able to identify which liquid or solid dissolves sugar. The sequence follows Gagne's nine events of instruction: 1) gaining attention, 2) informing learners of the objective, 3) stimulating recall of prior learning, 4) presenting the stimulus, 5) providing learning guidance, 6) eliciting performance, 7) providing feedback, 8) assessing performance, and 9) enhancing retention and transfer. Examples are given for each instructional event, such as using multimedia to gain attention and having students conduct experiments in groups.

Direction: Choose a topic with a lesson objective in any grade or year level. Make a
teaching sequence applying Gagne’s nine instructional events. Use the table
provided for you.
Topic: Science
Objective: Students will be able to identify which Liquid Solid dissolves the sugar.

Grade/Year Level: Grade 9

Event of Instruction Lesson Example

1. Gaining attention Captive the attention of the learners by

asking them a question that related to the
topic.
• Use Multimedia grabs the student's
attention.
• Asking them in the beginning.

2. Informing learners of the objective Describe objectives of the lesson, and

how the learners will be able to perform
and how they will be able to use their
knowledge.
• Show the PowerPoint presentation to
the learners.
• The learners can identify which liquid
solid dissolves the sugar.
• Inform the student by writing on the
board.

3. Stimulating recall of prior learning Built on what the learners already know,
start from the previous relevant
experience concepts, knowledge to relate
it with new information.
•Group Activities the students are to sort
the pictures of the materials on the
correct table that prepared the teacher.
4. Presenting the stimulus Teacher presents new content which
must be explained then demonstrated.
• Teacher must show the learners the
PowerPoint presentation.
• The materials that will be used to
conduct the experiment. Coloring, mini
baking soda, skittles experiment.
5. Providing learning guidance The teacher must give instructions on
how to learn. Assist the learners for better
learning.
• Students are given instructions to
conduct experiments with their
groupmates.

6. Eliciting performance The Learner's practice doing something

with the newly acquired behavior,
knowledge, skills.
• Students are given instructions to
conduct experiments with their
groupmates.

7. Providing feedback The Teacher provides specific immediate

feedback on the learner's performance.
• Teacher will be walking around while
the students are doing their task or
activities.

8. Assessing performance The teacher tests the students to

determine to what extent the new
knowledge has been mastered.
• Teacher presents the experiment they
had just conducted it.

9. Enhancing retention and transfer Provide similar problem situations and

encourage learners to transfer their newly
acquired knowledge.
•Giving them different experiments and
asking them to think the same way to
gain the correct and other factors.

through it the most?
