Mumps Guide for Community Health

Mumps is a highly contagious viral infection that usually affects children ages 5-9 but can also infect adults. It is caused by the mumps virus which spreads through direct contact with infected individuals or airborne droplets from their respiratory tract. Signs and symptoms include fever, swelling and tenderness of the salivary glands in the neck, and possibly the mouth and throat. While most cases resolve within a week or two, complications can sometimes occur. The best way to prevent mumps is through the MMR vaccine, which is recommended for all children and adults who have not had the disease or been previously vaccinated.
