The following table lists suggested numbers of first aid providers to
be available at all times people are at work.
Selection of first aid providers depends on a number of factors,
including an individual’s:
Reliability, disposition and communication skills
Aptitude and ability to absorb new knowledge and learn new
skills
Ability to cope with stressful and physically demanding
emergency procedures
Normal duties. Can the individual leave them to attend an
emergency rapidly?
A qualified first aid provider should hold a current First Aid
Certificate issued by a recognized specialist training organization
(e.g., Red Cross or Red Crescent) approved by local authorities.
Training content varies but generally includes:
managing an incident
resuscitation (CPR) and recovery
wounds and bleeding
burns and scalds
unconsciousness and shock
fractures
Specialist training may also be required in hazards specific to the
working environment such as electrical shock and chemical
exposure.
To maintain skills it is recommended that first aid providers have an
annual update covering:
what to do in an emergency
resuscitation and recovery
wounds and bleeding
unconsciousness and shock
specific hazards to the workplace
Training all maintenance staff in Emergency First Aid Treatment as
detailed above may be considered. It may be invaluable in
providing quick reactive treatment for staff working in medium risk
activities such as electrical and fitting work, etc.
