Biblical Insights on Humility

Humility, according to the Bible, involves having a modest view of oneself and one's sinfulness while recognizing one's complete dependence on God. It is the opposite of pride and arrogance. The Bible says humility is the proper posture toward God and that God lifts up and favors the humble. True humility involves seeing ourselves as we truly are - fallen in sin without God, and having faith and trust in God's wisdom, salvation, and leading rather than our own understanding.

What Does the Bible Say About Humility?

In the Bible, humility describes a character quality that properly values and accurately assesses
oneself, especially in light of one’s sinfulness. In this sense, humility is a virtue that involves
modest self-perception. It is the direct opposite of pride and arrogance. The Bible says that
humility is the appropriate posture people ought to have with God. When we maintain a humble
attitude, we reveal our dependence on God.

Humility can also refer to a lowly state of being, the inferiority of station or status, or a position of modest
economic means. As such, humility is the opposite of importance and wealth.

God Gives Grace to the Humble

Humility is a character quality that is of supreme value in the eyes of God. The Bible tells us that
the Lord blesses, honors, and favors those who are genuinely humble.

James 4:10
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor. (NLT

What Is Humility?
Humility is often characterized as genuine gratitude and a lack of
arrogance, a modest view of one’s self. However, the biblical definition of
humility goes beyond this. Humility is a critical and continuous emphasis
of godliness in the Bible. We are called upon to be humble followers of
Christ and trust in the wisdom and salvation of God. True humility is to
see ourselves as we actually are, fallen in sin and helpless without God.

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart  and lean not on your own
understanding;”  Proverbs 3:5
The profound Bible verse of Proverbs 3:5 is an excellent summation of
the biblical meaning of humility. To be humble, we must have faith that
God will lead us in the best way to live and how to avoid temptation. We
are to put complete trust in the Lord and not deceive ourselves with
vanity or lust. We should lean on the understanding, wisdom, and divinity
of God to show us the righteous path through prayer, meditation, fasting,
and other faithful practices. In order to do this, we must have the initial
requirement of humility to open our hearts and withdraw from the
arrogance of our ego.
