Filipino Adolescents CSE Conference

This document discusses the sexual and reproductive health of Filipino adolescents based on various studies and statistics. It finds that risky sexual behavior and unintended pregnancies are increasing among adolescents. Many adolescent mothers face repeat pregnancies and higher health risks. Adolescent pregnancy also has economic costs and prevents educational attainment. The COVID-19 pandemic is expected to increase unintended pregnancies due to reduced access to services. Comprehensive sexuality education is needed to address these issues.

Sexual and Reproductive Health of
Filipino Adolescents: What we know?
Young Filipinos
who had their
sexual initiation
before the age of
18 are increasing.

The proportion of
girls who are
engaging in sex
are increasing
much faster than
the boys.

Those who are engaged in risky sexual activities have no sufficient protection that
might lead to sexually transmitted infection (STI) and HIV/AIDS and unintended
pregnancies.
Unintended pregnancies are of great
concern since these are associated
with a range of adverse consequences
not only for the mother but for her
child as well especially when the
mother is still a child herself.
More and more
adolescent minors
are giving birth

About 171
livebirths were
born to minors
every day in 2019.

“Good news it’s declining but one pregnant
teenager is still one pregnant teenager, too many.
We are not even counting the unfortunate girls
younger than 15 who have become pregnant. They
are not many but each one has a tragic story
behind them. They really need our help.”
---Dr. Esperanza I. Cabral
Former Secretary of Health
The number of births
from mothers aged
10-14 is generally
increasing.
About 7
livebirths were
born to children
every day in
2019.

mothers increased

Adolescent Pregnancy is costly…
The age-earnings (wage rate) profile
is higher among those who
completed high school compared to
those who did not.

Early childbearing reduces

age-earnings (wage rate) profile
through its effect on high school
completion.

from early childbearing is estimated
on the average at PhP33 billion.
