CASE STUDY PROJECT DESCRIPTION (OCT2022-FEB2023)
ECC 584 INTEGRATED DESIGN PROJECT
Case Study Project Description
Semester October 2022 – February 2023
Main Title: Civil Engineering Failures – Lessons Learnt
Despite the best efforts of all professionals in the civil engineering field, failures may happen and
can cause death, injury, damage and financial loss. While such failures may be demotivating, it
is something that engineers must be ready for and learn from it. The failures might lead to new
technology breakthroughs and inspire others to improve.
Figure 1: The 1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge, in the U.S. state of Washington, opened to traffic on July 1,
1940, and dramatically collapsed on November 7 the same year. The bridge's collapse has been described
as "spectacular" and in subsequent decades "has attracted the attention of engineers, physicists, and
mathematicians". (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tacoma_Narrows_Bridge_(1940))
For ECC584 Project 2 (case study project), EACH of the students is required to submit his/her
proposal in a technical report with the main title: CIVIL ENGINEERING FAILURES – LESSON
LEARNT for ANY of a chosen CASE STUDY.
Students shall think that they are the design engineers who are to consult a client on the
mentioned project. All the design proposals and solutions should be written in a technical report.
This document is to read together with the main document “Case Study Project”. The report
should clearly address the elements stated in the performance criteria for Case Study Project.
The expected outcomes for the report generally contain the following:
(1) Societal concern (25%)
a. Ability to provide reasoning to professional solutions to the above problem with
considerations of societal, health, safety, legal and/or cultural context. (CO3-PO6)
b. Ability to show work ethics in solving the complex engineering problems. (CO3-PO6)
(2) Sustainable and Impacts (25%)
a. Ability to propose and justify sustainable material/systems/processes in solving the
problem. (CO4-PO7)
b. Ability to evaluate the impacts on the societal and environmental context and make
recommendations. (CO4-PO7)
Instruction for submission: Students are to refer to main document “Case Study
Project”: Appendix B: Format Technical Report on the format of report. Your technical
report shall contain only two (2) pages, a Cover page and one (1) page appendix if any.
