Bias Vs Prejudice

1. Have you been judge before because of your appearance and behavior?
2. Have you been selectively listening to someone who is speaking in preference to your
choice?
3. Have you become so receptive or friendly to certain people only?
4. Have you ever experience not being selected and not being given a favor?

BIAS and PREJUDICE

- are closely related


- often used interchangeably
- both have negative impact on our dealings

WHAT IS BIAS?

- Is the action of supporting or opposing a particular person or thing in an unfair way, because of
allowing personal opinions to influence your judgement
- Key words: Favoritism, unfairness

Common Type of Bias

1. Anchoring Bias- this happens when people rely too much on pre-existing information or
the first information they find when making decisions
 When we become anchored to a specific idea: we end up filtering all new information
 Example: One person’s view point anchored on the idea that Martial Law is generally
bad because it suspends all citizens right as written on academic textbook, because of
this that person cannot see the other side of the narrative which tell somehow the
better side of Martial Law implementation.
2. Media Bias- This happens when journalists and news producers select the events and
stories that are reported, and how they are covered
 Oppose Mike Inrequez- Walang kinikilingan, serbisyong totoo lamang
 Example: Certain TV Station is against one certain Prsedential candidate while
supporting another candidate to win the election
3. Confirmation Bias- it is the tendency of people to favor information that confirms their
existing belief
 Example you are a dog lover who believes that Dogs are better than Cats.
 When somebody says, Cats are better than dogs which is the opposite of what you
believe, the tendency is that you search for information that will support what you
believe.
4. Conformity Bias- This happens when one makes a wrong or uncomfortable decision to
fit in to please the group of people
 An example of this is conformity bias in a workplace: when your hiring team get
together to review a candidate’s application material & conduct the interview,
conformity bias can cause individuals to sway their opinion of a candidate to match the
opinion of majority
5. Halo Effect- a type of cognitive bias whereby our perception of someone is positively
influence by our opinions of what person’s other related traits.
 something referred to as the “Physical Attractiveness Stereotype” and the “what is
beautiful is also good” principle
 people who are condisered attractive tend to be rated higher on other positive traits as
well.
 Example: Among the applicants only Leo’s paper was completely reviewed because the
manager was impressed w/ his awards and commendations

What is PREJUDICE?
- Refers to pre-judging before looking at the evidence
- An unfavorable opinion or feeling beforehand without knowledge, thought, or reason
- Can have a strong influence on how people behave and interact with others, particularly
with those who are different from another group.

Common Type of Prejudice

1. Racism- the idea that groups of people exhibit different personality, characteristics, and
can be separated based on the dominance of one race over another.
 Example: Chinese were considered virus carrier due to Covid-19 disease, although they
are not sick
2. Sexism- a form of prejudice based on sex or gender
 Example: Long before women are considered weak and lack the strength to do the
work of men
 There’s also a time when there was a prejudice against the gay and lesbian community,
the they were treated differently because of their gender preference.
3. Classism- This is a prejudice base on social class or grouping of individuals based on
wealth, occupation, income, education, and social network
 Example: the idea that poor are uneducated and do not help our country and the poor
should not be treated well by government
4. Ageism- This is prejudicial attitude towards older people, old age, younger people, and
the aging process
 Example: all adults should not be hired because they only become a burden, especially
those who deserve to retire.
5. Religion- This is the attitude towards a person or group differently because of the
particular beliefs about religion
 Example: he lost his job because of his religion, which was believe to conflict with his
employer

BIAS PREJUDICE
-an inclination for or against a person idea or -reconceived opinion that is not based on
things especially in a way considered to be actual experience or reason
unfair
-both negative and positive attitude - usually negative attitudes
-results in unfairness - results in discrimanation
EXAMPLE EXAMPLE
- Teacher X favors certain students - It is sometimes assumed that
over others in grading final someone who is physically disabled
performance is also mentally disabled.
(A halo effect bias) (prejudice against classism)
- Picking articles or stories that are - Some people may consider all
pleasing to the owners of the Muslim women to be illiterate and
media organization or network uneducated.
