SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA E- BULLETIN

Issue # 2011/1 (28 January 2011)

FOR ATTENTION OF SCHOOL PRINCIPALS, SPORTS STAFF, TEAM COACHES,

INTERESTED STAFF AND STUDENTS
Welcome to School Sport Victoria’s first full year !  After three very intensive years of review,
negotiating and planning, it is now with great excitement and anticipation that we embark on the
new structure of School Sport in Victoria (SSV).  School Sport has new competition boundaries,
new competition pathways and new membership structures so please take the time to review this
E-Bulletin as it contains the latest information on what is happening in School Sport.

School Sport Victoria would be very grateful to schools to publish in their school newsletter early in
the year a short article about SSV and its programs together with the SSV logo so that your school
community is aware of the opportunities provided by SSV.  The article SSV wishes you to publish is
shown below.

School Sport Victoria (SSV) actively promotes school sport for all Victorian
school students, years 4 to 12, as a means of supporting schools in
developing their students’ health and well being.  SSV operates under the
auspices of the Department of Education and Early Childhood
Development.  Membership of School Sport Victoria is open to all Victorian
schools, providing the opportunities to participate in programs that extends
from grassroots intra and inter school sport, to district, division, region,
conference, state and national levels.  Students attending schools affiliated
with SSV are eligible for selection in Victorian Teams to compete in 2011
School Sport Australia National Championships.  Further information is
available from your School’s Sport Coordinator or on the School Sport
Victoria website, www.ssv.vic.edu.au.  Parents and teachers are encouraged
to regularly visit the site.

1. 2011 SSV COMPETITION BOUNDARIES

SSV competition boundaries are based on the nine Department regions and networks within
each region and were originally released early in 2010.  Following the initial release, schools
were offered the opportunity to negotiate exceptions to these boundaries and we now have a
concrete competition structure.  You can view the primary competition boundaries here and the
secondary competition boundaries here.  For a list of the current region / division / district
coordinators please click here.  If you have not already heard from your relevant Coordinator
you are urged to make contact with them as soon as possible.

2. 2011 SSV COMPETITION PATHWAYS

For primary schools, the initial competition level will be a District competition against local
schools.  Primary schools will then progress to Division level competition, which is also the
entry point for secondary schools.  Division winners will then progress to Region level finals.
The winners of these competitions will progress to their specific Conference final.  There will be
three Conference finals for each sport across the State,

· Winning schools from Barwon South Western Region, Grampians Region and Western
Metropolitan Region will participate in the Western Conference
· Winning schools from Hume Region, Loddon Mallee Region and Northern Metropolitan
Region will participate in the North Eastern Conference
· Winning schools from Eastern Metropolitan Region, Gippsland Region and Southern
Metropolitan Region will participate in the South Eastern Conference

A wonderful advantage of this competition level is that we will be able to localise finals thus
taking advantage of some of the superb resources available in regional centres.  This means
that country schools may not have to come to Melbourne for this semi final stage as had
occurred previously.  SSV will be able to hold Conference finals at various locations around the
state.

The winners of the Conference finals will then progress to the State Finals.

3. SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA MEMBERSHIP TYPES

School Sport Victoria now has three membership types.  These are

· Full members – for Government schools only

· Associate members – for Non-Government schools that participate in SSV interschool
sport.  Previously this had only occurred in primary competition but Non-Government
secondary schools can now apply to participate in SSV competitions, provided they are not
members of an existing School Sport association.
· Affiliate members – for any Non-Government Secondary School that participates in a
regular school sport competition for students in year levels 7 to 12 conducted by another
secondary school sport organisation.

A number of private secondary schools have taken the opportunity to participate in SSV
competitions in 2011 by becoming Associate members.  Whilst membership applications for this
class have now closed for 2011, schools wishing to join SSV in 2012 can contact the School
Sport office on 03 9488 9466 or via e-mail at [email protected].

4. 2011 AFFILIATION FEES

With the merger of the Victorian Primary Schools’ Sports Association and the Victorian
Secondary Schools’ Sports Association, a new affiliation fee structure will be introduced in
2011.  Fees for Full and Associate members will now be based on a per student rate using
2010 enrolment data.  Primary schools will be levied $0-90 (ninety cents) per student and 7-12
schools will be levied $2-00 (two dollars) per student.  Affiliate members will be invoiced at the
rate of $0.28 (twenty eight cents) per student (with a minimum cost of $140.00), School Sport
Associations at $0.23 (twenty three cents) and special schools will be charged $25.00 for
primary schools and $40.00 for secondary schools.  All costs are GST exclusive.  Invoices will
be issued at the beginning of Term 1 in 2011 and must be paid by 1 March, 2011.

5. SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA COMMUNICATION CHANNELS

The communication channels for information to your school about sport will have the following
pathway.

Matters can be moved through this SSV communication pathway from District through Division
and Region levels to State level.  This pathway is supported by region forums which will be
conducted twice a year in February and August.  It is compulsory for Region and Division
Coordinators to attend these meetings.  In turn, Divisions and Districts will also meet at least
twice a year.  The SSV office recommends that these occur in July and December for
Divisions; and June and November for Districts.  This will allow a progression of issues from
District through Division to Region level at least twice each year.

6. SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA MAILOUT / WEBSITE / HANDBOOKS

Just prior to the start of Term 1 SSV distributed to all schools via Australia Post planning
information for Sport Coordinators.  This included the very popular wall planners plus flyers
from State Sporting Organisations promoting their own programs.  SSV will not be producing
handbooks this year as SSV has received feedback that they soon become out of date.
Sport Coordinators should therefore constantly refer to the SSV website, www.ssv.vic.edu.au
for up to date information on SSV sport programs.  It is noted that with the formation of SSV
following the merger of the Victorian Primary Schools’ Sports Association (VPSSA) and the
Victorian Secondary Schools’ Sports Association (VSSSA), the websites of the two previous
Associations have been removed and users who try to access them will be automatically
redirected to the SSV site.  Please also note that the SSV website is an interim website and
will be replaced by a new design later in 2011.

community is made aware of these opportunities so please ensure this information is published
in your school newsletter.

One very important change has occurred in the nomination process for SSV’s 12 Years and
Under interstate representative teams for students attending primary schools.  For all sports
other than Australian Football, Basketball, Football (Soccer) and Netball all nominations will be
registered online via the SSV website (www.ssv.vic.edu.au).  Parents will be responsible for
registering their child and for downloading all details relating to trial dates, times, venues and
costs.  Nominations for 12 Years and Under Australian Football, Basketball, Football (Soccer)
and Netball teams must use the form available on the SSV website.

Students who are 12 years and Under that attend secondary schools will also nominate online
via the SSV website for all sports other than Australian Football, Basketball, Football (Soccer)
and Netball.  For these four sports students who are 12 years and Under and attending a
secondary school must use the form available on the SSV website.

It is again strongly suggested that schools advertise to parents via the school newsletter of the
