SECTION B

Answer the following questions briefly.

16. What are conductors and insulators? Give 2 examples for each.
Conductors – Materials that allow electric current to pass through them are called
conductors. Eg: copper, aluminium.
Insulators – Materials which do not allow electric current to pass through them easily.
Eg: rubber, wood.

17. What are constellations? Name the different constellations.

The group of stars which appear to form some shape or pattern are known as constellation.
Big Dipper, Orion, Cassiopeia are some of the constellation.

18. Identify the two arrangements of plastics. Give an example for each.

Linear arrangement
Thermoplastic

Cross – linked arrangement – Thermosetplast

19. What is blind spot?
At the junction of the optic nerve and the retina, there are no sensory cells, so no vision is
possible at that spot.

20. Define dispersion of light. Name the colours formed when white light is split.
The splitting of light into its colours is known as dispersion of light. VIBGYOR – Violet,
Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red.

21. Explain why a charged body loses its charge if we touch it with our hand.
When we touch a charged body the total charge is transferred into the earth through our body
and it loses its charge.

22. What is cloning? Name the parents of the cloned animal.

Cloning is the creation of an organism that is an exact genetic copy of another.
Finn Dorsett sheep and Scottish blackface ewe were the parents of the clone Dolly.

23. Differentiate between asteroids and comets.

Asteroids – A large gap between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter is occupied by a large
number of small objects that revolve around the sun. These are called asteroids.
Comets – Celestial bodies that revolve around the sun in an highly elliptical orbits. A comet
generally appears as a bright head with a long tail. The tail of a comet is always directed
away from the sun.

24. How are earthquakes caused?

Earthquakes are caused mostly due to the movement of Earth’s plates. The outermost layer
of the Earth is fragmented, and each fragment is called a plate. These plates are in continual
motion. When they brush against one another, or collide, or a plate goes under or moves
away from one another, they cause disturbances in the Earth’s crust which surface as
earthquake.

25. What are seismic or fault zones? Name an instrument to record seismic waves.
Since, earthquakes are caused by the movements of plates, the boundaries of the plates are
the weak zones where earthquakes are more likely to occur. These weak zones are called
seismic zones.
The instrument used to record the seismic waves is Seismograph.

SECTION C
Answer the following.
26. Paheli set up an experiment using liquid A in the beaker as shown.
She observed that the bulb glows. Then she replaced liquid A with
another liquid B. This time the bulb did not glow. Boojho suggested
replacing the bulb with an LED. They observed that the LED glows.
Explain.
Liquid A – Strong electrolyte. Liquid B – Weak electrolyte
As liquid B is weak the bulb did not glow. LED glows even if there
is a small electric current flow through it.

27. What are lightning rods? Why are they installed on tall buildings?
Lightning rod is a metallic rod taller than the height of the building installed in the walls.
One end of the rod is kept out in the air and the other is fixed in the ground. This provides an
easy route for the transfer of electric discharge to the ground.

28. What is electroplating? Give 2 examples of the application of electroplating.

The process of depositing a layer of any desired metal on another metallic object by means
of electricity is called electroplating.
Chromium plating on objects such as car parts, taps, wheel rims, bicycle handlebars etc.
For cutlery, statues, manufacture of printed circuit boards etc.
Jewellery made of cheap metals are coated with expensive metals like gold and silver.

29. Draw the constellations Ursa Major and Orion. Give one difference between them.
Refer textbook
30. Two mirrors meet at right angles. A ray of light is incident on one at an angle of 30º. Draw
the reflected ray from the second mirror.

SECTION D
31.a) Label the parts of an eye.
Refer textbook
b) Where is the image formed in the eye?
The image is formed on the retina.

c) Suggests 3 ways to take care of the eye.

Refer textbook
OR
a) Raem while waving his hand very fast in front of his eyes, observes that his fingers
appear blurred. What could be the reason for it?
The persistence of vision is the reason for blurred vision. Raem while waving his hand
very fast in front of his eyes, observes that his fingers appear blurred.
b) Eyes of the nocturnal birds have large cornea and a large pupil. How does this structure
help them?
They can see objects even in faint light. A large pupil and large cornea allow more light
to enter their eyes.

32. Observe the circuit given in the figure. Boojho set up this

circuit for the purification of copper.
a) What will be the nature of – (a) plate A (b) plate B
(c) and the solution?
Plate A – Pure copper
Plate B – Impure copper
Solution – Copper Sulphate

b) Explain the process of purification.

We take CuSO4 as a solution “and dip a pure copper plate as the cathode (-ve) and an
impure copper plate as the anode (+ve) in it. The copper from the impure copper plate is
transferred to the pure copper plate by the process of electroplating and impurities deposit
at the bottom. In this way, the copper plate becomes purified in the process of
purification.

Observing that the bulb does not glow in the circuit shown in Fig.A. Anil changed the
circuit as shown in Fig. (B). He observed deflection in the magnetic compass.

A  B

(a) What does the deflection in magnetic compass indicate?

The deflection in the magnetic compass indicates the flow of electric current in the
circuit.

(b) Why did the bulb not glow in Fig. (A)?

The bulb did not glow, because the current passing through the circuit could be weak
to make it glow. Also, it may happen because of other reasons like bulb may be fused
or the connections may be loose.

(c) What would be the effect of an increase in the number of turns in the coil wound
around the magnetic compass in Fig. (B)?
An increase in the number of turns in the coil wound around the magnetic compass
would increase the magnetic field around the magnetic compass which will result in
an increase in the deflection in magnetic compass.
