INTRODUCTION TO THE MASS
Good morning. Welcome to our Eucharistic Celebration.
Today we celebrate the Votive Mass in honor of Saint Joseph, husband of the Blessed
Virgin Mary and the foster-father of Jesus.
We don't know a lot about Joseph – we know that his Father’s name was Jacob and
that he was the husband of Mary. We know that he was a carpenter and that he
lived in Nazareth. We know that before he and Mary lived together, after their
engagement, he found out that she was pregnant and instead of shaming her, he
decided to divorce her quietly. The Gospel tells us that he did this because he was
an upright man, a man of principle.
We also know that he was a righteous man who followed the law: he observed
religious law when he went to Jerusalem for the Jewish festivals. He also followed
civil law when he went to Bethlehem for the census. We also know that Joseph had
dreams. God spoke to him in his dreams and he followed God’s word in his dreams.
Nowhere in the Gospels do we ever hear anything Joseph says but we know him to
be a man of action: he does what the angel tells him; he takes Mary as his wife; he
goes to Bethlehem; he finds a place to stay for the night; he takes his family to safety
in Egypt. Like a good father, he also goes looking for the young Jesus when he
disappears, and he finds him in the Temple after three days.
And so, as we journey through Lent – especially when we gather around the
Eucharistic table, let’s ask for St. Joseph’s intercession. May he guide us and help
us open our hearts to God’s plan: that we may be upright and righteous; that we
may be persons after God’s will; that we may be able to pray, “Father show me
how I fit into this plan of yours.” Like St. Joseph, may we allow God to speak to us
in our dreams and then get up and do as the angel of the Lord directs us. God has a
great plan for all of us.
3
Leading us in worship is Reverend Fr. Norlan H. Julia of the Society of Jesus,
Rector of San Jose Seminary. Joining him are the Jesuit priests of the Ateneo de
Manila University.
Let us now together joyfully sing our entrance hymn.

LITURGY OF THE WORD
First Reading
2 Sm 7:4-5a, 12-14a, 16
A reading from the Second Book of Samuel
The LORD spoke to Nathan and said:
“Go, tell my servant David,
‘When your time comes and you rest with your
ancestors, I will raise up your heir after you, sprung
from your loins, and I will make his kingdom firm.
It is he who shall build a house for my name.
And I will make his royal throne firm forever.
I will be a father to him,
and he shall be a son to me.
Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before me;
your throne shall stand firm forever.’”
The Word of the Lord.
Responsorial Psalm
Ps 89:2-3, 4-5, 27 and 29
R. The son of David will live forever.
The promises of the LORD I will sing forever;
through all generations my mouth shall proclaim your faithfulness,
For you have said, “My kindness is established forever”;
in heaven you have confirmed your faithfulness.
R. The son of David will live forever.
6
“I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
I have sworn to David my servant:
Forever will I confirm your posterity
and establish your throne for all generations.”
R. The son of David will live forever.
“He shall say of me, ‘You are my father,
my God, the Rock, my savior.’
Forever I will maintain my kindness toward him,
and my covenant with him stands firm.”
R. The son of David will live forever.
Second Reading
Rom 4:13, 16-18, 22
A reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans
Brothers and sisters:
It was not through the law
that the promise was made to Abraham and his descendants
that he would inherit the world,
but through the righteousness that comes from faith.
For this reason, it depends on faith,
so that it may be a gift,
and the promise may be guaranteed to all his
descendants, not to those who only adhere to the law
but to those who follow the faith of Abraham,
who is the father of all of us, as it is written,
I have made you father of many nations.
7
He is our father in the sight of God,
in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead
and calls into being what does not exist.
He believed, hoping against hope,
that he would become the father of many nations,
according to what was said, Thus shall your descendants be.
That is why it was credited to him as righteousness.
The Word of the Lord.
Commentator: Please stand to honor the Holy Gospel.
Acclamation before the Gospel
Ps 84:5
Blessed are those who dwell in your house, O Lord;
they never cease to praise you.
Presider: The Lord be with
you. Commentator: And with your
spirit.
Presider: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew
Commentator: Glory to you O
Lord. Gospel / Mt 1:16, 18-21, 24a
Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary.
Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ.
Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came
about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to
Joseph,
but before they lived together,
8
she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.
9
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man,
yet unwilling to expose her to shame,
decided to divorce her quietly.
Such was his intention when, behold,
the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and
said, “Joseph, son of David,
do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.
For it is through the Holy Spirit
that this child has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins.”
When Joseph awoke,
he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him
and took his wife into his home.
e Gospel of the Lord.
Commentator: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

CREED
I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from
Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER II
Presider:
You are indeed Holy, O Lord,
the fount of all holiness.
Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray,
by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall,
so that they may become for us
the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
At the time he was betrayed
and entered willingly into his Passion,
he took bread and, giving thanks, broke it,
and gave it to his disciples, saying:
take this, all of you, and eat of it,
for this is my body,
which will be given up for you.
In a similar way, when supper was ended,
he took the chalice
and, once more giving thanks,
he gave it to his disciples,
saying:
17
take this, all of you, and drink from it,
for this is the chalice of my blood,
the Blood of the new and eternal covenant,
which will be poured out for you and for many
for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this in memory of me.
e mystery of faith.

we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again.

giving thanks that you have held us worthy
to be in your presence and minister to you.

that, partaking of the Body and Blood of
Christ, we may be gathered into one by the
Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your Church,
spread throughout the world,
and bring her to the fullness of charity,
together with Francis our Pope and Honesto our Bishop
and all the clergy.
18
Remember also our brothers and sisters
who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection,
and all who have died in your mercy:
welcome them into the light of your
face. Have mercy on us all, we pray,
that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,
with the blessed Apostles, and all the Saints who have
pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co
heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you
