Allowable Stress

Allowable stress is the safe resisting intensity that a structural member can support without failing. It considers the inherent strength of the material and proper structural design to ensure safety. Factor of safety is the ratio of failure load to allowable load, accounting for errors, unknown loads, and degradation. Design involves calculating the required cross-sectional area based on allowable stress values and applied loads. Sample problems demonstrate determining required diameters and thicknesses using given allowable stresses and loads.

ALLOWABLE STRESS
-IT IS THE SAFE RESISTING INTENSITY THAT THE MEMBER
CAN FULLY SUPPORT WITHOUT FAILING.
CONSIDERATONS:
1. Every material has its own strength that can fully support a
certain load.
2. The structural member must be designed properly to ensure
safety of the structure.
FACTOR OF SAFETY
One method of specifying the allowable load for a member. It is a ratio of the failure load
F(fail) to the allowable load F(allow).

CONSIDERATONS:
1. Error in fabrications
2. Unknown vibrations, impact or accidental loadings
3. Atmospheric corrosion, decay and weathering.

Sample Problem
The control arm is subjected to the loading shown in Figure. Determine to the
nearest ¼ in. the required diameter of the steel pin at C if the allowable shear
stress for the steel is Ʈ𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 8 ksi.
Sample Problem
The suspender rod is supported at its end by a fixed-connected circular disk as
shown in Figure. If the rod passes through a 40-mm-diameter hole, determine the
minimum required diameter of the rod and the minimum thickness of the disk
needed to support the 20-kN load. The allowable normal stress for the rod is
σ𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 60 MPa and the allowable shear stress for the disk is Ʈ𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 35 MPa.
Sample Problem
The shaft shown in Figure is supported by the collar at C, which is attached to the
shaft and located on the right side of the bearing at B. Determine the largest
value of P for the axial forces at E and F so that the bearing stress on the collar
does not exceed an allowable stress of σ𝑏𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 =75 Mpa and the average normal
stress in the shaft does not exceed an allowable stress of σ𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤 = 55 MPa.
NOTE:

Bearing stress is the contact pressure between the

separate bodies. It differs from normal compressive
stress, as it is an internal stress caused by
compressive forces.
Sample Problem
The rigid bar AB shown in Figure is supported by a steel rod AC having a diameter
of 20 mm and an aluminum block having a cross-sectional area of The 1800
𝑚𝑚2 . The 18 mm diameter pins at A and C are subjected to single shear. If the
failure stress for the steel and aluminum is (σ𝑠𝑡 )𝑓𝑎𝑖𝑙 = 680 MPa and (σ𝑎𝑙 )𝑓𝑎𝑖𝑙 = 70
MPa respectively, and the failure shear stress for each pin is (Ʈ𝑠𝑡 )𝑓𝑎𝑖𝑙 = 900 MPa ,
determine the largest load P that can be applied to the bar. Apply a factor of
safety of FS =2.
