Who’s Who? The ARNIC Teaching Team
Tilla Alexander has over 20 years of experience teaching English as a New Language. She has
taught at the Office of Adult & Continuing Education. Recently, she has been teaching an ESL
class for Venezuelan and Immigrants Aid. She also holds leadership positions in NYCCAL (New
York City Coalition for Adult Literacy) and the NYC TESOL conference.
Jane Landis started her career as a motion picture sound recordist. She taught ESL at Brooklyn
College, the Manhattan School of Music, and for a Hunter College-sponsored program for
immigrant restaurant workers. She loves the arts, especially music (she plays guitar!) and
incorporates music into her lessons whenever she can.
Joyce Mandell passionately teaches pronunciation and business presentation skills to non-native
professionals in a variety of educational institutions and industries. She is on the faculty of Baruch
College’s Communication Studies Department, NYU’s Professional English Program and Pace
University’s English for Professionals program. She holds an MA in TESOL from Hunter College.
Karen Ruelle is a professional writer. She is the author of 22 books (some of which she also
illustrated). She also managed the EiA conversation program at the ESU for over a decade. After
receiving her CELTA certification, she began working as an ESL teacher for ARNIC. She loves
combining her various skills to nurture and encourage ESL students in her creative writing class.
Elaine Sohn taught ESOL for five years at CUNY. After this, she became a Site Advisor at the New
York Public Library in Upper Manhattan, running a program with more than 10 staff members, 30
volunteers and 100+ students, but enjoying the classroom the most! When she retired, she
became a volunteer at ARNIC, first as a conversation tutor then as a book club leader. She soon
began working as an ESL teacher for ARNIC. Her philosophy: the more you talk and listen, the
more comfortable you feel using your English skills!
Robert “Bob” Speziale began his career as a policy analyst and speechwriter in Washington, D.C.
and later worked in publishing as an Editorial Director at Time-Life Books. He is a devout
gardener, a published author and photographer and has taught ESL for more than 10 years.
