CHAPTER I : INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
Graphic design is a form of visual communication that uses text and or images to convey
information or messages. The art of graphic design encompasses cognitive abilities and skills
including typography, image processing, and page layout. Graphic designers arrange the
appearance of letters and composition spaces to create an effective and communicative
design. Graphic design covers all fields that require verbal language translation into visual
design of text and images on various publication media in order to convey messages to
communicants as effectively as possible.
CorelDraw is a vector graphics editor created by Corel, a software company headquartered
in Ottawa, Canada. Its final version version 17 named X7 was released on 27 March 2014.
CorelDraw was originally developed to run on Windows 2000 and later operating systems.
Version of CorelDraw for Linux and was developed, but was discontinued due to low sales.
In CorelDraw there are various menus and CorelDraw Sub menus also have advantages and
disadvantages. So in this paper we will discuss about these things.
1.2 PURPOSE
To provide information about CorelDraw such as the advantages and disadvantages of
CorelDraw, and also the CorelDraw Guide along with basic examples of using CorelDraw,
making it easier for us to use the CorelDraw application.
1
CHAPTER II : DISCUSSSION
2.1 Understanding the CorelDraw application
CorelDRAW is a very popular drawing software. A software that is versatile and used by
designers from various genres: fine art, logo design, icon and character design, poster design,
brochures, business cards, book covers and so on. It is favored by print designers because it
has a color palette that is close to the colors produced by printing machines, even though
CorelDRAW is not suitable for layout book contents. First appeared in 1987, the last version
released was X7 (17). Popularity and its wide use makes other similar software, more or less
then follow the appearance and how to use it, including drawing software that is not paid
(open source).
2.2 The advantages and disadvantages of the CorelDraw application
Advantages:
• The tools are more freehand, therefore CorelDraw is basically a corel draw graphic
software that can stand alone, because it is vector based and freehand.
• Coreldraw also has the ability to mix and match with photo editing.
• Can produce an image from a photo with the addition or editing of text and certain
characters.
• Coreldraw is also able to import or export files into jpg, bmp or other files.
• Vector-based images are the final output size that can be reduced to a minimum but with a
quality that is not inferior to raster or bitmap-based images. That's why graphic design and
vector-based imagery are widely used for desktop publishing, printing, and other fields that
require visual processing.
• In addition to its user-friendly appearance and easy to learn
• Coreldraw is very good at text and image collaboration. Although Photoshop can also be
done, it's easier with CorelDraw.
• The support for forums and the coreldraw community are so many and varied, so that we
can easily find tutorials, tips and can share knowledge with other coreldraw users around the
world.
2
• Exim (export-import) supported graphics format is very much which helps with
compatibility.
• Has many tools and effects that make it easier to create vector objects (lines, curves,
boxes) especially in designing/redesigning logos.
• For object duplication, there are many steps that can be used, for example by pressing the
'+' button on the keypad, Ctrl+D, Copas, Effect Blend, mirror transform etc.
• CorelDraw's default font is very much so that it is sufficient in making logos etc.
Deficiency:
• Consumes a very large amount of memory and other resources, especially if the image
being created has a lot of detail.
• The more complex the file, the larger the file.
• Printed colors are inaccurate (does not match the screen display) on some types of printers.
• Creating a table object is not as easy as creating a table in a number or word processing
application, in Corel, the table is created manually.
• When combining vector and photo/bitmap objects, the print quality is not satisfactory, for
example, making a book cover with text and photo objects.
• Coreldraw version compatibility has many problems in sharing to other versions.
2.3 CorelDraw Guide
Open CorelDRAW
CorelDRAW is not something that is directly on your computer, when you just buy it for
example, or after you install an operating system. Of course you must first buy this software
and install it before you start using it. CorelDRAW is available in a package called Corel
Graphics Suite along with several other complementary graphics software from Corel. The
installation size is between 100-300 megabytes for the entire package. Corel Graphics Suite
is available for Windows and Macintosh operating systems. If CorelDRAW has been
installed, it is very easy to open it, just find the location of the application software group on
your computer.
An example for Windows is clicking the 'Start' button _'All Programs'_'CorelDRAW
Graphics Suite X7'_'CorelDRAW X7'. What if you have a different version of CorelDRAW?
Just find the menu section that contains the word Corel, then look for a shortcut for
CorelDRAW there.
CorelDraw . Interface
After giving the command to open CorelDRAW, a window with questions or options may
appear, just click 'New', and the main CorelDRAW interface will appear. This tutorial uses
CorelDRAW version X4 for the discussion. If you have a different version, don't worry, in
general the CorelDRAW interface has not undergone radical changes from one version to the
next, so you can still use the information in this tutorial. The difference is that new
capabilities are added with each upgrade, which is usually indicated by the presence of a new
tool on a new toolbar or menu, so that in versions older than X4, some parts of the interface
are missing.
Parts of the CorelDRAW interface (numbers point to the illustration image):
1. Title Bar
2. Menu Bar A collection of menus that are used to access all existing functions in
CorelDraw, including opening – saving files, effects, and so on.
3. Standard Toolbar A collection of icons that function to access the most frequently used
general menus. Here's the contents of the standard toolbar:
4. Property Bar Serves to display the property options of a toolbox function that is being
used. In default conditions (the selected tool is the pick tool – white arrow, then the property
bar will contain the paper size of the drawing area, paper orientation, units used, and so on.
The property bar will always change depending on the tool we select in the toolbox.
5. Ruler Bars.
6. Toolbox Contains a selection of tools and drawing modes. Click on a tool icon to use it,
then the icon button will appear as if it was pressed, and the tool is ready for us to use in the
drawing area. Sometimes there are also subtools that can be brought up by long-pressing on
a tool icon, then clicking on the available sub-tools. The contents of the Toolbox are shown
on the next page.
7. Field of Work.
8. Image Field The area of the image with a certain paper size that we can use to design
images. What is outside the edge of the image area will not be printed when it is printed.
9. Color Palette Used to select the color that we will use to color an image object. Left-
clicking on the palette will set the fill color of an object, and right-clicking on the palette will
set the color of the edges and lines.
10. Page Bookmark.
11. Status Bar Shows some important status and events that are happening, also on the right
shows the fill and line colors of an object.
12. Object Properties Displays the settings that can be selected from an object. Usually what
is here is the fill color, line color, and so on for a particular object.
Tools For Drawing
You need some basic tools to make your drawing easier. These tools or tools are available in
the Toolbox on the left of the interface, and are intentionally grouped at the top to make it
easier for users to remember and reach them. The tool must be clicked first to use it. These
basic tools include:
Pick Tool
Selects and activates objects to manipulate objects. For example scaling, rotating, skewing,
resizing.
Shape Tools
1. Shape Tool: Performs the process of editing nodes on shapes (line components of objects).
2. Smudge Tool: Rub the object so that it changes the shape of the object being rubbed.
3. Roughen Tool: Gives a distortion effect on the object.
4. Transform Tool : Rotate, enlarge, shrink, skewing image freely.
Crop Tools
1. Crop Tool: Used to remove objects outside the selection.
2. Knife Tool: A knife that serves to cut objects. It works exactly like using a regular knife.
3. Eraser Tool: Erase certain parts of the object.
4. Virtual Segment delete tool : Delete a segment virtually
Zoom Tools
1. Zoom Tool: Enlarge or reduce the display of the work area on the monitor.
2. Hand Tool: Move the work area to a certain position.
CHAPTER III : CLOSING
3.1 Conclusion
Corel Draw is a vector-based image processing application that is widely used by PC
users, for desktop publishing, printing, and other fields that require visual processing. The
advantage of processing vector-based images is that the final result size can be kept to a
minimum but with a quality that is not inferior to raster or bitmap-based images.
3.2 Sugesstion
My advice is to read the instructions for using CorelDraw which are usually in the form of a
default PDF from the software that you installed. Learn all the tools contained in it, don't just
read it, but just try to put it into practice! Also learn about shortcut keys or quick buttons that
you can use while using the CorelDraw application.
You don't need to memorize it, while you try it, you will memorize it yourself! This also
applies to the names of the tools, you don't need to memorize them because the more you get
used to using them you will automatically remember them.
