The Self-Driving Car

Artificial intelligence is clearly revolutionizing our world in many areas, and that includes transportation. In 2015,
the installation rate of AI-based systems in new vehicles was 8%. This consisted mainly of speech-recognition
systems. However, this rate is forecast to rise to 109% in 2025 due to the inclusion of multiple AI systems such
as gesture controls, eye tracking, driver monitoring systems, and virtual assistants, among others. This will
inevitably lead to a self-driving car, but opinions are divided as to whether autonomous cars are a good idea.

Supporters of AI point to the fact that the vast majority of accidents are caused by human error such as drunk
driving, speeding, tiredness, and a more recent phenomenon, distraction. Clearly, automated vehicles would
eliminate all accidents of these kinds. They also argue that apart from the obvious benefit of protecting lives,
fewer accidents would also save governments millions of dollars a year.

Detractors argue that millions of workers actually make a living from transporting goods and people. The
majority of these people would need to be reemployed. As for safety, if a child suddenly walked in front of
a speeding car, what would happen? Would the car hit them or swerve off the road? Such a complex moral
decision would have to be programmed into the machine. And if there were an accident, who would be
responsible and who would pay for damages? Finally, some people actually enjoy driving, and if all vehicles
were automated then they would be deprived of their hobby.

Whatever your view, the automobile industry is not waiting, and many car companies plan to release models
with driverless features in the near future. Then it’s only a question of time before fully autonomous vehicles
follow the trend. Whether the public accepts them, that’s another question.
