Good day everyone by the way I am Hannah Sofia E. Malinaday, who will discussed
about the cyber and Digital literacy.

And throughout the discussion, our objective is that first, understand cyber and digital
literacy. Second, recognize the importance of being responsible citizen in the
cyberspace and digital world. Third, Discuss the 8 elements of Digital Literacy

Now, to begin let us first define the following terms. Cyber Literacy. It is a staple set of
skills that permits us to function productively in the digital environment. And when we
say digital literacy, this pertains to the ability that is more than just the mechanical ability to use
digital devices for it entails a variety of complex cognitive skills. In other words, cyber/digital literacy is
an umbrella term for having the skills you need to live, learn, and work in a society where
communication and access to information is increasingly through digital technologies
like internet platforms, social media, and mobile devices. And also it pertains to the ability
to use computer and digital technologies effectively. This is very important especially nowadays, the
digital age, wherein most of the people are using digital technologies in their everyday activities. In our
houses, in the public facilities, and even in school. Of course, with the existence of this technologies, it
makes information easy to access which makes it very useful in the teaching and learning process. For
instance, when we try to search for an answer regarding an assignment, we will just open our laptops or
phones to search using the google. And with just one click, you can already access various information
from different sources. Another example would be our situation wherein most of the classes are
conducted through online. With this kind of advancement, the need to be digitally literate and responsible
individuals is really needed because in some cases, they use technologies in negative ways, such as
scamming other people, or hacking other peoples account and other more. That’s why we have this term
which is the digital citizenship.

As citizens who use technologies it is important for us to take responsibility for our roles in the
cyberspace. Digital citizenship it refers to the Citizenship in the digital world that pertains to the qualities
that a person is expected to have as a responsible member of the digital community. Now there are 5
characteristics of digital citizenship, and this includes being respectful. When we say being respectful of
course you have to treat others kindly and with respect in the digital world. For example, Since the world
has seems to become smaller due to the technologies, it is more easier to connect with other people from
different culture, such as in messenger, Instagram, Facebook and other more, and part of the
responsibility, especially in communication is to respect others culture despite of the differences like
avoid cyber bullying or posting negative thoughts towards other people. Second is using of internet to
educate themselves. Now as a citizen that uses digital technologies it is a good way to use these
technologies to broaden our knowledge on important things such as for research purposes in school rather
than on some negative information. In line with this, there are also some instances that we tend to believe
fake information in the social media which is why as stated by the previous reporters that it is important
for us to know how to evaluate a certain info if it is a credible source or not. Third characteristic is not
stealing. Nowadays, stealing is very rampant in the digital world particularly plagiarizing the works of
others and using it as your own. That’s why students are taught to always do citations. Fourth
characteristic is protecting personal information. As much as possible let us not expose important
information especially in social medias, some people tend to overexpose their own which might put you
into risk. For example, I have this one friend wherein their family posted the large money they have
acquired in their work and then the next day they posted that they are on a vacation. And with that
information that they’ve expose, it became the reason that at the same day their house got robbed. So, the
conclusion to that is it is better to post less info. Lastly, another characteristic is to be responsible buyer. It
is important to be responsible in our purchases by being careful in deciding what to purchases and also
protect ones purchasing information. This is really needed because diba ngayon most of the people buy
stuffs either through shoppee or Lazada and we can’t deny the fact that it is very tempting to buy things
that you really want and need but we also have to be responsible in buying. Ask ourselves is this a legit
seller, do I need this thing, or is it worth the amount. So those are the things that you have to think before
buying.

Now we are done with the digital citizenship, let us now proceed to the 8 elements of Digital literacy.

First is cultural. According to Hannon 2000 “the nature of literacy in culture is repeatedly redefined as the
result of technological changes”. We know that change is the only thing that is constant in this world, and
We know, and we we've seen that technology does contribute in building and changing communities and
cultures and the nature of literacy is defined by technology because every type of literacy depends on
some kind of technology such as pens quill and other more. And as technologies change and improve, our
literacies also is redefined. Second is Cognitive. Functional internet literacy is not the ability to use a set
of technical tools; rather it is the ability to use a set of cognitive tools according to johnson 2008. This
simply implies that internet literacy is not about procedural stuff like knowing a series of steps to do like
clicking the button then go to menu and such. But rather it is more of the cognitive approach if something
changes, and you were able to keep up with it. For example, my mother received her phone and ask us
what are the steps to do when she wants to open her fb however whenever there are changes or update in
the Facebook app or problems like malfunction in the phone, she is stuck and doesn’t have the knowledge
on what to do. So, in other words it is not just about being able to know how to use a certain technology,
but it is the cognitive idea behind the procedural stuff that happens.

Third is Constructive. Digital literacy is the awareness, attitude and ability of individuals to appropriately
use digital tools… in order to enable constructive social action” according to digeulit project 2006. It
simply means that being digitally literate is not just about being able to know how to utilize a digital
technology but also being responsible in using these technologies that would positively contribute in the
society and the people. Fourth, is communicative. As stated by Buckingham 2007, digital literacy must
therefore involve a systematic awareness of how digital media are constructed and of the unique rhetoric
of interactive communication. This is very rampant nowadays because mostly today we use digital media
as a tool for connecting and communicating with other people and it is important for us to know how to
communicate effective and with respect to them.

Fifth is confident. According to OECD, Modern society is increasingly looking to people who can
confidently solve problems and manage their own learning throughout their lives, the very qualities which
ICT supremely is able to promote. Being able to confidently interact with digital communication channels
or digital devices and use these in solving significant problems in the society is important part of learning
and literacy in the digital age. Sixth element is creative. As stated by Conlon & Simpson in 2003 the
creative adoption of new technology requires teachers who are willing to take risks… a prescriptive
curriculum, routine practices… and a tight target-setting regime is unlikely to be helpful. So this is about
approaching thing in creative or new ways for example some google inventions which allows
improvement in the experience of people. For instance in the classroom due to the development of google
classroom we were still able to conduct classes even though we cannot see each other physically.

Seventh element is Critical. “Once we see that online texts are not exactly written or spoken, we begin to
understand that cyberliteracy requires a special form of critical thinking. Communication in the online
world is not quite like anything else.” As stated earlier that in being a digitally literate individual is not
just about the ability on how to use a technology but it also requires cognitive skills. Being in the digital
world it requires critical thinking. Last element is the civic. “The ability to understand and make use of
ICT - digital literacy - is proving essential to employment success, civic participation, accessing
entertainment, and education.” As stated by conlon and Simpson in 2003. This simply implies that being a
digitally literate individual has a significant effect in our every aspects of our lives specifically in
employment success where you can incorporate digital technologies to better improve work, civic
participation for building and improving the city, accessing entertainment, and education where it
contributes to the teaching and learning process.

So that would be all for my report. Thank you.
