LESSON PLAN:
Lesson Plan Topic: The Holocaust
Objectives: Students will analyze the Nazi policy of pursuing racial
purity, especially against the European Jews; its transformation
into the Final Solution; and the Holocaust that resulted in the
murder of six million Jewish civilians.
Intro: View a timeline ranging from 1939-1945. A jumbled list will
appear next to the timeline with specific events from history that I
will ask the class to try and put in the correct order. For example,
Hitler becomes chancellor in Germany…The “Final
Solution”…Rescue and Resistance…etc (3 minutes)
Body: Teacher/Student Actions:
• Ask students a general question, “What do you already know
about the Holocaust?” I am expecting to hear possibly dates,
cities, countries, conditions at the camps, etc. (2 minutes)
• Teacher lecture on the big picture events that the students
just put onto the timeline (Nazi Rule, Jews in Pre-War
Germany, The “Final Solution”, Rescue and Resistance, The
Number, Memorial, etc.) Check for student understanding
frequently along the way. (15 minutes)
• Lecture will include various maps and primary source
documents. Students will determine if they’ve heard of any of
the death camps on the map. They will view a map of the
thousands of camps that were created. Students will view
video snippets and read personal primary source documents
to receive a deeper understanding of the atrocities that
occurred. (3 minutes)
• Exit ticket (formative assessment) Closure-students will
answer the following question via Padlet. “Since the
Holocaust, there have been numerous mass genocides that
still occurred…why is this? What can be done to stop these
atrocities in the future?” (2 minutes)
Monitoring Progress
• As I review each event, I will call upon students to tell me why
the Holocaust happened, how did it happen, why didn’t
anyone step in right away, why have there been mass
genocides after this event, etc.
• I will use the formative assessment as a check for knowledge
that the students understood the components of the
lesson. Am I confident after that, or do I have to reteach?
• The summative assessment will be the unit quiz they take to
demonstrate knowledge from this lesson.
Appropriate Strategies-
• Students can be placed in pairs/fours in breakout rooms to
discuss the exit question before solo response to the Padlet.
