Ideal Force in Wire Drawing Calculation

The steel wire is drawn from 10 mm to 8 mm diameter. The mean flow stress is 400 MPa. Using the wire drawing formula that considers the final wire diameter, and ignoring friction and redundant work, the ideal force required is 8.97 kN.

(b)8.97kN

(c)20.11kN

(d)31.41kN

ExtrusionLoad
Approximatemethod(Uniformdeformation,nofriction)work formula
A P = Ao ln o Af

Forrealconditions
A P = KAo ln o Af
K=extrusionconstant.

ForcerequiredinWireorTubedrawing
Approximatemethod(Uniformdeformation,nofriction)work formula
A P = Af ln o Af

Given

Di = 10mm Df = 8mm

0 = 400 MPa
Ignore friction and redundant work means = 0, = 0 Hence

d = 2 0 ln

ri rf 5 = 2 400 ln 4 = 178.51 MPa

Ideal Force = 178.51 106 N/m2 rf 2 = 178.51 106 3.14 (0.004)2 = 8968 N = 8.97 kN
