INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Sports can unify cities and people in unique ways. From pick-up games in
neighborhoods and parks, to amateur leagues and professional spectacles, public
sporting events can build and strengthen the collective civic pride and solidarity of a city
(2017, Erick Hyun Yong Kim). Almost every one of us plays sports since where kid like
laro ng lahi until we try playing badminton, volleyball, basketball etc., or maybe
supporting a group or individual watching and cheering them. Sports are part of our lives
that’s why since elementary there is a competition in schools on different kinds of sports
from board games to physical activity games. Every athletes or player has their reason
on joining and competing with other schools. Some of them were to have a scholarship,
some of them were born athletic or what we call “sporty” or some of them maybe
because their parents wants them joining. Whatever their reasons was I believe that
athletes needs to have a place to practice especially when you are already competing
with other cities or municipalities.
Adaptive reuse or re-development is great way to bring the older building in
reshaping it and bringing a new function or purpose to it. It is beneficial to the
environment because it lessen energy consumption, saves money and also keeps the
building for demolishing it. Re-development of a structure is an approach to sustainability
especially now that every building that will construct needs to be more sustainable and
would not or lessen the cause of negative effect on our environment. “Creative
adaptation provides pride in our heritage, a link with the past, respect for the aesthetics
and craftsmanship of another time, insights into our development, ample creative
opportunity for architectural innovation and problem solving, enhancement of the urban
fabric, greater security, stability and beauty, while conserving basic materials and
meeting modern needs” (Diamonstein 1978, 13)

Talisay Ground Sports Facility was located at Talisay Balanga City, Bataan.
When I was in my childhood we are always going on the Talisay Ground or what we call
“oval” to watch a different kind of sports competition or just play when we are waiting for
our service after school. There is also a yearly reenactment of World War II at the
ground that watches by many people sitting on the benches. There were lots of
happening in that place at that time. Until after I graduated at Talisay Elementary School
where the “oval” was adjacent to it, year’s passes by I never heard of any events or
happenings on that place again. I really don’t know what happens or how that place lead
to be a place that doesn’t have a purpose anymore where it should had been before. It
was most likely to be abandoned. “Buildings will inevitably deteriorate and may
subsequently be abandoned as they age unless they are properly maintained. Besides,
changes in technological and commerce trend may edge out some structures; making
them obsolete and prone to abandonment”. When there are sports, there are athletes
and there should also a place for sports.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Balanga City lacks in sports facility for CLRAA athletes. Having a sports facility
for them was very important so that they can practice more and get ready for their
upcoming competition with other cities and municipalities. Based on the CLRAA Meet
Medal Tally the City of Balanga Team was placed rank 16 in 2019, rank 19 in 2018, rank
19 in 2017, and rank 12 in 2016 with over 20 cities and municipalities teams. It was
because there is no right and enough facilities for them to focus more on their trainings.
They only practice at elementary schools for a limited time for them to be prepared then
the balanga elementary school canceled their class for Clraa athletes to give time to
practice.
Sub- problems
No comfortable quarters for the athletes to have rest after the long training.
The Oval wasn’t use properly and is being abandoned it might gives negative
effects on the place.
Lacks of public sports facility for balanga residences.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Redevelopment of Talisay Ground as new sports facility gives a greener future. It
gives sustainability because it reduces carbon emission produces by new buildings. It
makes the Talisay Ground brings back its life and have its new purpose. This research
might help the athletes to gain higher ranks in Central Luzon Regional Athletic
Association Meet and other sports competitions because of having a better training
ground.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
Goals
Create a sustainable sports facility that can cater different sports training space
that improves physical ability and skills for athletes.
Objectives
Design a comfortable dresser and rest quarters for athletes competing in other
cities or country.
Tropical Modern redevelopment of old Talisay Ground.
Consider the public use in designing the ground for balanga residence that wants
to enhance their skills or have leisure time in sports.
5
SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS
Scope
The study focuses on built forms showing public and private areas and its
sustainable features. Includes space requirements and standards relevant to the laws,
site selection procedure and environmental impacts, and sustainable materials and its
uses will be presented.
Delimitations
The computation of materials, source of funding or budget, and major
investigation of the building construction and structural design will not be included.
JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY
The site that is abandoned was applicable for redevelopment. It has a potential to
be the new sports facility. The study presented will benefit the community, neighbors,
residence and athletes in the city as this will be a spot for skills development and
recreation. The athletes with a better training ground might be the pride of the city in
terms of sports.
6
According to AKINDELE, O.A. (2013) the insidious effect of abandonment on the
physical and socio-economic fabric of the city is phenomenal. It has no aesthetic value, it
is a practical symbol of wastage, it lowers the value of the adjoining properties, it create
financial burden to the municipal; It facilitates crime; at least 37% of the total crimes in both
cities have connection with abandoned buildings.
The data collected in this study will have a potential to raise awareness for future
researchers pertaining to redevelopment of abandoned buildings and make it
sustainable for the environment.
