PTE General Level 2 Practice Test

The passage discusses three main points: 1) In the last 50 years, rapid human population growth has led to increased demands for land, energy, and water, using resources faster than nature can renew them and creating more waste. 2) Humans have only existed for 200,000 years, yet have had a greater impact on Earth than any other species through activities that are changing every part of the planet and pushing some animals to extinction. 3) Understanding how human activities affect nature is important to protect the environment and allow both people and wildlife to thrive, as everything in nature is connected.

SECTION 5

Read the article and answer the questions below. Put a cross in the box next to
the correct answer, as in the example.

THE VALUE OF NATURE

Over the past fifty years, the rapid growth of the world’s population has led to a massive
increase in the demand for land, energy and water. As a result, we are now using the
Earth’s resources faster than nature can renew them. We are also creating more waste than
our planet can absorb.

Humans have only been around for 200,000 years, a tiny blip in the 4.5 billion years of our
planet’s history. Yet we have had a greater impact on the Earth than any other species.
Human activity is changing every part of our planet. These changes are so great that
scientists are saying that we have entered a new age – the Anthropocene, meaning ‘the age
of humans’. All over the world, we are cutting down forests, using too much water from
rivers, depleting the oceans of fish and pushing some animals to extinction. For both people
and wildlife to thrive, now and in the future, we need a healthy planet, with a rich variety of
plants and animals and vibrant ecosystems. In nature, everything is connected. Like
throwing a stone into a pond, the ripple effect of any changes touches every part of our
planet. Understanding how our activities affect the natural world is important to find the best
ways of protecting it.
Example According to the passage, in the last fifty years
Athe volume of water in our seas and oceans has increased Bhumans have wanted more and
Cmore and more open and free land has come into private hands

consequences
