In your observation of our present economy, identify five (5) ethical problems and
formulate solutions on how to solve those problems. You may find news
clippings and reliable online sources to support your answer. Submit your output

1. Corruption
Elections: Because people buy votes and tamper with the results, odd
occurrences frequently occur in the Philippines during elections. Vote counting is
difficult, which makes it simple for anyone to manipulate the results. The ballot
boxes go through four levels of bureaucracy after the last vote is tabulated before
the winner is declared. Voting precincts transmit ballot boxes to municipal boards
of canvassers, provincial boards of canvassers, and national boards of
canvassers, in that order. But because they fear retaliation, are unaware of their
rights, or are unaware that they even have any, they do little to correct these
wrongs. dealing with election fraud.
Solution
Using computers to count votes will eliminate issues brought on by the current
system, in which ballot boxes must pass through numerous layers of
bureaucracy before reaching the national board of canvassers. Computerization
will shorten the time it takes to declare a winner, enhancing the legitimacy of the
election process and making it simpler for voters to accept the outcomes. More
citizen watch groups should be in charge of overseeing the conduct of elections.
One group has been in charge thus far. The Bishops-Conference Businessmen's
and the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting are two additional
organizations that could carry out this task.
2. Teenage Pregnancy
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines, where 7.3 million
Filipinos lost their jobs and where schools have been closed since March 2020,
there are worries about young girls becoming pregnant too soon because they
are no longer in the physical environment that serves as their usual protective
setting, which is the school setting. 2,411 females between the ages of 10 and 14
gave birth in 2019 or before the pandemic. A two-month study by the DOST-
NRCP led by Dr. Gloria Luz Nelson, NRCP member of Division VIII (Social
Sciences), a sociologist by training with a focus on Population Studies, found that
several mediating factors, including school closures, dysfunctional families, and a
lack of access to sexual and reproductive health education, are what actually
cause teen pregnancies rather than the pandemic. The two-month study
recounts the experiences of 18 teens and draws interpretations from their stories
about being young, pregnant, and mothers during the epidemic. The information
acquired through in-depth screen-mediated interviews (Facebook, Messenger) is
what makes up the narrative. The responders come from the Philippines' nine
provinces, or seven regions.
Solution
Making sure that anti-violence against women and children desks in barangays
are functional; educating the youth about sexual and reproductive health, even in
non-formal education settings; normalizing respectful dialogue on the subject;
providing rights-based measures to assist pregnant girls and young mothers
continue and finish their education; providing opportunities for vocational training;
and following up on young mothers who dropped out of school.
3. Crime
MANILA – The country's crime rate has dropped by 11.36 percent in the first four
months of this year, a ranking police official said Thursday.
In a Laging Handa briefing, Philippine National Police (PNP) Public Information
Office chief Col. Redrico Maranan said a total of 12,226 crime incidents were
recorded from January 1 to May 2, as compared to 13,763 crimes in the same
period last year.
Solution
To effectively prevent crime, first understand its nature and dynamics. Any crime
requires three things. Motive is the reason or cause why a person or group
commits a crime; Instrumentality is the method or implement utilized; and
Opportunity is the victim's omissions and/or commissions that enable the crime to
be committed.
4. Discrimination
Discrimination occurs when a person is unable to enjoy his or her human rights
or other legal rights on an equal basis with others because of an unjustified
distinction made in policy, law or treatment.
Solution
Raise awareness or share the resources that you have found useful with your
community to help them learn how they can play a role in ending racism and
discrimination. If you have younger siblings or family members, set a good
example for them. Try to look for games or books that can help them learn that
we all have a right to dignity and safety - there are lots online.
5. Justice
The pandemic is laying bare lingering issues such as abuse of power, human
rights violations, lack of access to the justice system, overcrowded jails and
detention centers, lack of accountability, weaponization of the law, and impunity.
Solution
Our criminal justice system must keep all communities safe, foster prevention
and rehabilitation, and ensure fair and equal justice. But in too many places, and
in too many ways, our system is falling short of that mandate and with
devastating consequences. The United States is saddled with an outdated,
unfair, and bloated criminal justice system that drains resources and disrupts
communities.
