Nutrition and Energy Requirements Guide

This document outlines the objectives and content of the Nutrition unit in the Pharmaceutical Biochemistry course. The unit aims to teach students about the biological basis of nutrition and how diet influences health. The outline covers topics like expenditure of energy, body mass index, ideal body weight, basal metabolic rate, specific dynamic action, and total caloric requirement. It also provides methods for calculating energy needs using factorial or short methods and factors for different activity levels.

PHARMACEUTICAL BIOCHEMISTRY (PBIO 211)

UNIT 7:
NUTRITION

COLLEGE OF PHARMACY
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this unit, the students are expected:

1. To demonstrate knowledge regarding the biological basis of nutri

tion and the mechanisms by which diet can influence health

2. To create a correct menu plan for at least a week to show mainte

nance of good eating habits to a healthy living.
OUTLINE:

1. Expenditure of energy
2. Body Mass Index
a. Computation of IBW
B. Computation of BMR
C. Computation of Ideal weight
D. Computation of SDA
E. Computation of TCR

EXPENDITURE OF
ENERGY:
Basal metabolic rate – energyexpenditure
necessary to maintain physiologic functions.

BODY MASS INDEX

BMI =weight in kg / height in m

1981 JOINT FAO/WHO/UNUCONSULTATION

1. Computefor BMR Note:

bodyweight in kg (W)

5ft 2 in =62 in / 39.37 in =1.57 m=157 cm

157 cm– 100 =57 – (10%of theanswer)
57- 5.7 =51.3
IBW =51.3 kg
Age Range Males kcal/day Females
kcal/day
0-3 60.9 W - 54 61.0 W -51
3-10 22.7 W +495 22.5 W +499
10-18 17.5 W +651 12.2 W +746
18-30 15.3 W +679 14.7 W +496
30-60 11.6W +829 8.7 W +829
>60 13.5W+487 10.5W+596
17 years old=(17.5)(51.3) +651
male =1,548.75kcal
2. BMR IS MULTIPLIED BY THE FACTORS:

Activity lev Male Female

Light 1.58 1.45
Moderate 1.67 1.55
Veryactive 1.88
Light Moderate Heavy
Office workers Men in light Agricultural

Occupational 2.3/1.6 x
BMR
Discretionary 1.8 xBMR
Residual 1.4 xBMR
time
Note:
For moderateactivity,factor for occupational activitie
s is 2.7 xBMR inwomen.
For veryactive activity,factor for occupational activities
is 3.0 xBMR inmen.
The other factors remain the same.
II. FACTORIALMETHOD

1.Determination of IBW
a.Use of standard weight and height tables.
b. Thannhausermethod
Ht. (cm) – 100 less 10%of the obtained valueEx.
160 – 100 =60 kg– (10%of 60 kg)=54 kg
2. Calculation of BMR for 24 hour at 1 kcal/kg/ hour

BMR =1 kcal xIBW x24hours

=1 kcal x54 x24
=1,296kcal/kg/hr
3.Corrected BMR
BMRc =BMR – (0.1 kcal xIBW x#of hoursofsleep)

=1296 – (0.1 kcal x54 x8 hrs ofsleep)

= 1296 – 43.2
=1252.8kcal
4. CORRECTEDPHYSICALACTIVITY
P.A. =BMRC X %OF CORRECTEDBMR

Bedrest 10%
Sedentary 30%
Light 50%
Moderate 75%
Heavy 100%
PA=1,252.8 X0.75
= 939.6 kcal
5.CalculateSpecific Dynamic Action (SDA)
SDA=0.06 (BMRc +PA)
=0.06 (1,252.8 +939.6)
= 0.06(2192.4)
= 131.54 kcal
6. CalculateTotal Caloric Requirement (TCR)
TCR=BMRc +PA+SDA
=1,252.8 +939.6 +131.54
=2, 323.94kcal

TCR for a student, 54 kg (IBW)with 8hrs ofsleep =

2,323.94kcal
