Fire Safety Equipment Lab Report

The document summarizes a laboratory experiment conducted by students on portable fire extinguishers and fire hose reels. The objectives were to introduce students to these firefighting systems, including their concepts, principles and mechanisms. The students identified a building with these systems, studied the different types, located them on a building plan, and discussed their suitable locations according to regulations. They concluded that portable extinguishers can be installed anywhere due to their size, while hose reels are wall-mounted and connected to water pipes to allow fighting fires from a distance.

INTRODUCTION

Fire fighting systems and equipment vary depending on the age, size, use and type of building
construction. A building may contain fire extinguishers, fire hose reels, fire hydrant systems and
automatic sprinkler systems. Fire extinguisher locations must be clearly identified. Extinguishers are
color coded according to the extinguishing agent. It is the policy of the Community Safety and
Resilience Department that fire extinguishers be logically grouped at exits from the building, so that
occupants first go to the exit and then return to fight the fire, knowing that a safe exit lies behind them
away from fire. Selection and location, which simply specifies a distance travel to a fire extinguisher
rather than their location in relation to escape paths. Blind compliance with the standard has the
potential to place the fire between the occupant and the safe escape path.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of the laboratory is:

To introduce students to the concept, principles and the mechanism of portable fire extinguisher and fire
hose reel.

APPARATUS
Portable fire extinguisher and fire hose reel.

PROCEDURES

1. Identify suitable building with portable fire extinguisher and fire hose reel for the case study.
2. Study types of portable fire extinguisher and fire hose reel.
3. Shows all portable fire extinguisher and fire hose reels available in the chosen building.
4. Discuss the portable fire extinguisher and fire hose reel by using picture, diagram and drawing.
5. Based on the data collected, refer to UBBL 1984 for any comparison and recommendation.
DATA

Plan of location for portable fire

extinguisher and fire hose reel.

extinguisher and fire hose reel.

DISCUSSION

Fire extinguisher is a portable equipment that used to extinguish the fire. It can be install in every
building because of its size.

Hose reel is an equipment that were stick on the wall and not portable to extinguish the fire. How ever
the length of the hose is long and it can be extend to further place. The equipment is connected to the
water pipe and can produce high pressure water. The high water pressure allow the water to reach fire
from long distance so the user will not expose to fire. This equipment usually found in big building such
as school, mall and hospital.

The location if fire extinguisher and fire hose reel is usually located within 4m of an exit. These
equipment is separated in each storey of each building.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, we can understand the concept, principle, and mechanism of portable fire extinguisher
and hose reel. From this report, we can identify various type of fire fighting system and equipment fire
which are; fire extinguishers, fire hose reels, fire hydrant systems and automatic sprinkler systems. We
also identify the suitable location for these equipment.
