OBJECTIVES:
1.classify organisms using the hierarchical
taxonomic system
2.create mnemonic device on biological
taxonomic system
3.discuss the quotation “Where there is
unity there is victory”-Publilius Syrus
Classification: putting things
into orderly groups based
on similar characteristics.
WHY DO WE CLASSIFY
THINGS?
CLASSIFICATION
Taxonomy is the
branch of science
that names and
groups organisms
according to their
characteristics and
evolutionary history.
EARLY SYSTEM OF
CLASSIFICATION
•Aristotle grouped everything
into simple groups such as
animals or plants. Organisms
were first classified more
than 2,000 years.
EARLY SYSTEM OF
CLASSIFICATION
Plants were
placed into
three
categories
based on the
differences
in their
Animal stems

THE SYSTEM OF
CLASSIFICATION
The modern classification system
was developed by the Swedish
scientist Carolus Linnaeus in the
mid 1700’s.
Some characteristics he used to
classify organisms were outside
appearance, internal organs, and
how body systems worked.
THE SYSTEM OF
CLASSIFICATION
He developed a Hierarchy
(a ranking system) for
classifying organisms that
is the Basis for Modern
Taxonomy.
For this reason, he is
considered to be “father”
of modern taxonomy.
Kingdom - is the highest and most
comprehensive level of classification.
Phylum – is a group of related classes.
Class – is a group of related orders.
Order – is a group of related families.
Family – is a group of related genera.
Genus – is a group of related species.
Species – is a group of similar individuals
capable of interbreeding to produce fertile
offspring.

THE HUMAN SPECIES
Kingdom: Animalia (Animal in Latin)
Phylum: Chordata (Spinal Cord)
Class: Mammalia (have mammary glands)
Order: Primates (two mammary glands)
Family: Hominoidea (bipedalism)
Genus: Homo
Species: Sapien

CONCLUSION
The classification system for organisms have been
around for a long time. It has endured several
changes and is quite complex. Without it modern
biology could not exist, much in the same way that
a grocery store would go out of business if it did
not have a classification system. Thus,
classification of organisms help us to easily identify,
quantify and protect species diversity.
ASSIGNMENT
Directions: On a short bond paper, classify the
following organisms using the hierarchical
taxonomic system
1. Dog
2. Gumamela
3. Mushroom
