1 – 1 THE SIMPLE TENSES
TENSE EXAMPLES MEANING
Simple Present (1) It snows in Alaska. - Simple present expresses events or

1 – 2 THE PROGRESSIVE TENSES
Form: be verb (is, am, are) + verb (-ing)
Meaning: The progressive tenses give the idea that an action is in progress during a particular
time. The tenses say that an action begins before, is in progress during, and continues after
another time or action.
TENSE EXAMPLES MEANING
Present Progressive (1) She is sleeping right - It is now 11:00. She went to sleep at
(Present Continuous) now. 10:00, and she is still asleep. Her
sleep began in the past, is in
progress at the present time and
probably will continue.
Past Progressive (1) She was sleeping when I - She went to sleep at 10:00 last
(Past Continuous) arrived. night. I arrived at 11:00. She was
still asleep. Her sleep began before

I arrived.
Future Progressive (1) She will be sleeping - She will go to sleep at 10:00

Form: have/has + past participle
Meaning: The perfect tenses all give the idea that one thing happens before another time or
event.
TENSE EXAMPLES MEANING
Present Perfect (1) She has already eaten. - She finished eating sometime before
now. The exact time is not
important.
Past Perfect (1) She had already eaten - First, she finished eating. Later, her
when her friend arrived. friend arrived. Her eating was
completely finished before another
time in the past.
Future Perfect (1) She will already have - First, she will finish eating. Later,

Form: have/has + been + verb (-ing) present participle
Meaning: The perfect progressive tenses give the idea that one event is in progress immediately
before, up to, until another time or event. The tenses are used to express the duration of the first
event.

Present Perfect (1) She has been studying - Event in progress; studying.
Progressive for two hours. - When? Before now, up to now
