ABSTRACT

In this paper, we reviewed research on advantages and disadvantages of social media to

mental health. Parental expectations had a greater influence than parental criticism on self- and

other-centered perfectionism, which is more prevalent now because there are always problems that

prompt numerous students to remark and voice their opinions. The effects of parents' expectations

and involvement in academic performance were examined using a descriptive research method in

the context of the new normal. Two hundred thirty (230) DIST students made up the study's sample

of respondents after simple random sampling was used to collect them. The data required for this

investigation were gathered via a questionnaire. After collected data were examined, calculated,

tabulated, and evaluated.

Researchers discovered that, as seen by DIST students, parents’ expectations had a

considerable impact on academic performance.

CHAPTER I

The Problem and its Background

Introduction

Lutkevich (2021) stated that social media is a collective term for websites and

applications that focus on communication, community-based input, interaction, content-

sharing, and collaboration. People use social media to stay in touch and interact with

friends, family, and various communities. On the other hand, businesses use social media

platforms to market and promote and advertise their products and track customer concerns.

Social media has a wide range of users globally. Mobile applications make these platforms

easily accessible. Some popular examples of general social media platforms include

Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

The verdict is still out on whether social media is damaging to the mental health of

teens. This is in part due to the lack of research. Some studies show that online connections

with small groups of people can be beneficial to teens, while other research points to a rise

in symptoms of anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. (Psycom, 2018)

Social media use can also negatively affect students, and teens, distracting them,

disrupting their sleep, and exposing them to bullying, rumor spreading, unrealistic views

of other people's lives, and peer pressure. Other studies also have observed links between

high levels of social media use and depression or anxiety symptoms. A 2016 study of more

than 450 teens found that greater social media use, nighttime social media use, and

emotional investment in social media — such as feeling upset when prevented from

logging on — were each linked with worse sleep quality and higher levels of anxiety and

depression. (Mayo Clinic)

Specifically, ones under senior high school curriculum have been using social media

platforms enormously compared to the previous generation. Importantly, social media

application has been the foundation and pillars that educators use to conduct and create

connections with their students. It is the one-way method that guides both teachers and

learners through understanding the subjective opinions of every student, and a place where

to open their concerns such that social media becomes a tool that bridges the concerns and

questions their responsibility is very concerning so this research aims to determine how

social media affects the mental health of students and how it affects their performance

academically between two parties.

The purpose of this research is to know how social media affects the mental health of

students particularly the Senior High School students at Dominic Institute of Science and

Technology. Being socially active on the internet can affect the behavior of a person,

having interaction online is good but when the person is starting to procrastinate or worse,

they are already neglecting.

Significance of the Study

School – when the study gets published, the school will understand the students more and

their system may be more considerate to their students.

Teachers – this may serve as an eye-opener for teachers on what their students are facing.

Especially the mode of learning is through using online platforms which causes a big

impact on their mental health.

Readers – this study will help the readers to know a student's point of view, and how does

social media truly affect the mental health of the students

Community – this research can inform the community that most students are experiencing

mental health crises so everyone must be aware of how to use social media effectively.

Future Researchers – these studies can be used as a starting point for a new theory or

research. Future Researchers can base their new theory or study on this research.

Students – this research will help students to be more aware of what are the effects of

social media on their Mental Health.

Statement of the Problem

The study seeks to encourage the Senior High School students of Dominic

Institute of Science and Technology (DIST) on social media platforms and regardless if the

senior students are enduring a mental health issue particularly, this pandemic. Specifically,

the researchers sought to answer the following questions:

1. The background profile of the respondents

1.1 Age

1.2 Sex

1.3 Grade Level

1.4 Senior High School Track and Curricular Strand

2. Effects of social media

2.1 Productivity

2.2 Information Dissemination

2.3 Questioning self-worth

2.3.1 Cyber-Bullying

3. Relevance of social media platforms

3.1 Time of Usage

3.2 Information Reliability

Theoretical Framework

According to McAbee, an educator who teaches English in eleventh grade in North

Carolina, social media has crippled students when it comes to interacting with one another,

specifically face-to-face interaction. Their ability to communicate effectively is slowly

deteriorating, Mcbee added. Social media is indeed helping a lot in terms of various uses;

however, social media has been known for its disadvantages, and interaction on social

media is not advantageous. Its Electronic explains Barkley, who has been studying smart

phones use and students since 2013. Barkley says the higher the cell phone use, the more

time spent on social media, and the higher the anxiety. Peer relationships get worse the

more a person uses their phone/gadgets.

According to Braun (2017), one of the students Braun encountered once had created

a website that allows visitors to donate to the American Cancer Foundation. The people

including parents and grandparents have responded well via online platforms, especially
on Twitter. “They got a lot of comments from the online community,” Braun says. Based

on this previous research, it is certain that social media has advantages and disadvantages.

It also shows that social media cripples the productivity of students, additionally the time

spent on social media also increases the chance of mental health conditions including

having been stressed, anxiety, and depression. However, on the other hand, social media

also gives help to those in need of communication and spending time with loved ones who

might be in different countries. Furthermore, social media is a platform for new

opportunities such as making friends who would even support one’s mental health when

needed. In conclusion, social media has been a very good instrument for a lot of people to

be with the person they want them to be, even if it takes only on the internet. It has been

known that social media is such a helpful way to connect with people all around the world.

Through social media, humans were able to reach platforms that help them through hard

times like YouTube videos and vines or “memes'' that are available on several platforms

including Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok.

Conceptual Framework

Social Media is a collective term for websites and applications that focus on

communication, community-based input, interaction, content sharing and collaboration.

Since social media can be used on various things, it also causes issues especially on

students specifically on their mental health. Online bullying, online games, fake news, etc.

can be usually seen taking place on several platforms which puts pressure on the mental

health of students, especially senior high students. By understanding and having a deep

connection towards the concept of how social media affects mental health it gives curiosity.
Social media has become a tool to connect concerns and issues between two parties. It has

also been used when people keep in touch and interact with others. On the other hand,

social media is used in businesses to promote their products. Indeed, the use of social media

has a vital role in people’s lives.

Hypothesis
There is a significant relationship between the use of social media and the mental

health of senior high school students of Dominic Institute of Science and Technology

Academic Year 2022-2023.

Scope and Delimitations

The study covered the determination of the advantages and disadvantages of social

media affects the mental health of senior high school students of Dominic Institute of

Science and Technology. The primary subjects of this research study consisted of the grade

11 and grade 12 students enrolled in Academic Year 2022-2023.

Definition of Terms

Age - length of time a person has lived (Oxford Dictionary)

Cyber bullying - the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by

sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature.

Grade level - the level of the educational program studied by a student. Academic strand

- specific types of specific skills that are designed and specialized to match your interests

Information Dissemination - is to distribute or broadcast information. This refers to an

active distribution and the spreading of information of all kinds to the users or those

audiences that deserve it. (InfoSci-Dictionary, 2007).

Information Reliability - reliable information must come from dependable sources. A

reliable source will provide a “thorough, well-reasoned theory, argument, etc. based on
strong evidence.” Widely credible sources include: Scholarly, peer-reviewed articles and

books. (Lee E. Krahenbuhl, 2019)

Productivity - refers to their efforts and ability to perform efficiently in their studies. This

involves how well they manage their time, their ability to prioritize, and their overall input

into achieving academic success. (Lorea Lastiri, 2022)

Sex - refers to the physical differences between people who are male, female, or intersex.

A person typically has their sex assigned at birth based on physiological characteristics,

including their genitalia and chromosome composition. This assigned sex is called a

person’s natal sex. (Tim Newman, 2021)

Senior High School Track & Strand - defines a set of possible course selections available

to a specific group of students. The choice of career track will define the content of the

subjects a student will take in Grades 11 and 12. Each student in Senior High School can

choose among three tracks: Academic; Technical-Vocational-Livelihood; and Sports and

Arts. (Follet, 2022) While curricular strand used to indicate the disciplines within a learning

area. (UNESCO International Bureau of Education)

Self-worth - the internal sense of being good enough and worthy of love and belonging

from others. (Wilmington, 2004)

Time of usage - the amount of time people spend on social media. Broken down, time

spent on social media differs across each platform (Evan Asano, 2017)
CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature

In this article, DIST students analyzed the perception of senior high school students

at the Dominic Institute of Science and Technology of social media: Mental health crisis.

Lutkevitch (2021) stated that social media is a collective term for websites and applications

that focus on communication, community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and

collaboration. Social media we can use to interact or to communicate to other people like

friends and family. Mobile applications make these platforms easily accessible. Some

popular examples of general social media platforms include Twitter, Facebook and more.

Social media is damaging the mental health of people especially the Gen Z, the teens, the

youth. This is the part due to the lack of research. Other researchers point to a rise in

symptoms of anxiety, depression and eating disorders, it can also negatively affect students.

It is distracting them, disrupting their sleep and exposing them to bullying, rumors

spreading, unrealistic views of other people’s lives and peer pressure.

Age

Studies made by Pew Research Center revealed that the three most popular social

media platforms among teens, in order, are YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat. In the 2018

survey, the video-sharing platform (YouTube) received 85%, the photo and media platform

(Instagram) received 72%, and the multimedia instant-messaging platform (Snapchat)

received 69% of users. Also in 2018, GlobalWebIndex reported that three hours is the
average time spent on social media of people with ages ranging from 16 to 24. However,

exceeding three hours of usage by adolescents will possibly cause them mental health

problems, according to JAMA Psychiatry.

Cyber-Bullying

Over the 5-year duration of observation, researchers of "Cyberbullying Among

Adolescents and Children: A Comprehensive Review of the Global Situation, Risk Factors,

and Preventive Measures" study (2021) Zhu, C., et al. discovered that there is a significant

increase of cyber-bullying rate affecting both adolescents and children, wherein verbal

violence is recorded to be the most common type.

Grade level

The study entitled "Predictors of Depression and Anxiety among Senior High

School Students during COVID-19 Pandemic: The Context of Home Quarantine and

Online Education" analyzed the influences of the COVID-19 pandemic and it was

discovered that under the prevalence of the virus, senior high school students' (Grade 11

and 12) problem were exacerbated. The pressure from their parents' educational attainment

and challenges of online classes causes depression and anxiety to these adolescents,

concluding that the COVID-19 contribution to mental health is significant.

Information Dissemination

A study from China entitled "Information Dissemination Analysis of Different

Media towards the Application for Disaster Pre-Warning" assessed six media in

disseminating information. Analysis for cellphone-type of media shows that it is more

effective in informing because of how detailed verbal communication it allows.

Information Reliability

More than twice the record of 2.07 billion in 2015 are currently social media users

worldwide. The average time a person has spent on this means of interaction is 2 hours and

24 minutes. About 65% of Indonesians use social media as part of their job, recorded being

the highest worldwide.

Productivity

According to the study of St. Cloud Technical and Community College students

are focusing more on social media and because of this, students do not have the ability to

focus and are struggling to focus and procrastinating resulting in failing grades.

Questioning self-worth

Facebook, a social networking service, has been identified as attracting adolescents,

and worsening their problem with self-esteem. In addition, numerous studies show support
to claim that self-esteem can decrease when exposed to social media. The age group

recorded to be the most affected by these is 10-14.

Sex

The study of Joanna Martin and Julie Hadwin “The Roles of Sex and Gender in

Child and Adolescents Mental Health”, examines that there are poor mental health in

children and young people connecting to gender identity in other words, people (young or

adult) who are having a gender crisis are having a poor mental health such as suicidal

thoughts and self-harm, this research also pervades us that males are experiencing

behavioral [e.g. oppositional defiant disorder (odd)/conduct disorder (cd)] and anxiety

disorders by late adolescents (18 and above) while females were more likely to diagnosed

with anxiety and mood disorders.

Senior High School Track and Curricular Strand

The researchers from Best link College of the Philippines (2019) stated that, "Social

media has become one of the most important means of communication in current times.

Regardless of the distance, it makes sharing information, files, pictures, and videos easier

with other people.”. Therefore, educational variables were assessed: performance task,

written works, and quarterly assessment. It was then revealed that using social media

causes change to the ABM students' performance. It makes these academic track ABM

students less engaged, unfocused, and less prepared resulting in low scores because of

social media browsing.

Social Media Usage

A Kepios analysis shows that 59.3% of the October 2022 global population are

social media users. It continued to grow over the past year too, having 190 million new

users since October 2021, averaging 6 new users’ rate for every second.

Local Literature

A total number of 879 senior high school students, enrolled in private and public

schools in the Philippines, were participants in the study. With the collected responses and

statistics, social media was proved to cause a positive impact on the environment and

academic performance. Social media enables students to fulfill school-related duties: gain

and share new information: and unwind with the entertainment it offers. For the usage of

social media as an educational tool and to gain pleasure satisfaction, results were high.

While an average amount was found for using the medium for searching contemporary

issues. (Tus, J. et al., 2021)

Foreign Literature

According to Bob Patton, the strategy to recover from cyberbullying and to promote

better sleep is to reduce both physical and psychological harm. "Our results suggest that

social media itself doesn't cause harm, but that frequent use may disrupt activities that have

a positive impact on mental health such as sleeping and exercising, while increasing
exposure of young people to harmful content, particularly the negative experience of cyber-

bullying" (Russel Viner, 2019).

Synthesis

These Mental Health Crises have been proven to greatly affect the Senior High School

Students of Dominic Institute of Science and Technology being exposed to social media

and in light, of the study being undertaken there is a high probability that these crises affect

the other students as well. The massive increase of students reported moderate or severe

psychological distress on national surveys. Some of the reasons for that increase was

schools were facing a surge of an outbreak, considering the health of students they inquired

in demand care that Far Outpace Capacity. Students who are already coping with Mental

Health Conditions have been especially vulnerable to the schools, and now we have

conducted a study that comprises the mental health of the senior high school Students of

Dominic Institute of Science and Technology showing that social media is both beneficial

and harmful to the students.

CHAPTER III

Research Methodology

This chapter presents the method and procedures used to complete the analysis of

the study. It includes the discussion of research design, respondents of the study, research

instrument, data gathering procedure, and statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

Apart from the recognized causes of social media, the study conducted aims to have

additional information on the existing ones. Therefore, the descriptive method led the

researchers to deem it most appropriate. Additionally, while several types of descriptive

methods are available, the researchers selected the survey specifically.

Respondents of the Study

The study limited its respondents to the senior high school students of Dominic

Institute of Science and Technology for the Academic Year 2022-2023. All the enrollees

under the Academic Track (Accounting and Business Management; General Academic

Strand; and Humanities and Social Sciences) and Technical Vocational Livelihood Track

(Information and Communications Technology; and Home Economics) for the mentioned

year were 200 in total. The 170-sample size was determined with a 0.03 margin of error

from 200 elements. Concluding, 170 students from the offered strands in Dominic Institute
of Science and Technology Academic Year 2022-2023 were the number of respondents

the researchers must and had collected the data from

Sample and Sampling Techniques

The researchers selected a simple random technique for sub grouping. These sub

groups, also known as strata, were where the researchers drew their conclusion.

Concluding, 170 students from the offered strand in the Dominic Institute of Science and

Technology where the number of respondents must and had collected the data from.

Research Instrument

The researchers’ study was descriptive, and used a questionnaire as an instrument.

The questionnaire applied in Google Forms was selected for it was ideal in generating

information. The questionnaire included the use of Likert Scale. After the approval of the

questionnaire, it was distributed mainly through Facebook Messenger, and added the

utilization of other social media applications whenever necessary. And also, with the use

of Hard Copies which was distributed through face to face.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers constructed a questionnaire relevant to the study. The researchers then

wrote a letter of request regarding the approval of a questionnaire sent to verifiers. After

the validation of the questionnaires, the researchers personally administered the research

instruments to the respondents which were questionnaires. They conferred and discussed
the significance of the study and accomplished the distribution of the instrument properly.

In every senior high school track’s strand has a researcher to collect the accomplished

questionnaires. After the questionnaires were accomplished, the results were tallied.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The following are the statistical procedures to use for interpreting the future

gathered data from the respondents.

1. Frequency Count and Percentage. To analyze the demographic variables of the

respondents, the following formula will be used:

𝐹
P = 𝑁 (100)

Where:

P = Percentage

F = Frequency for each category

N = Total number of respondents

100 = Constant multiplier

2. Weighted Mean. This statistical tool will be used to calculate the weight of the

responses. The formula for the weighted mean is as follows:

∑ 𝐹𝑊
WM = 𝑁

Where:

WM = Weighted mean

∑ = Summation symbol

F = Frequency for each option

W = Assigned weight

N = Total number of frequencies

3. Likert Scale. The following Likert Scale serves as the guide for interpreting the

data to be collected.

Rating Scales

To determine the advantages and disadvantages of social media to the mental

health of grade 11 and grade 12 students of DIST A.Y 2022 – 2023 the rating scale

below was used to conclude the average of each variable and weighted mean.
Scale Weighted Mean Verbal Interpretation

Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation of Data

This chapter is concerned with data presentation of the findings obtained through

the study. The data presentation is organized according to the questions this study was

designed to address.

The graph 1 showed that 103 or 60.5% of students are between the ages of 17-18,

45 or 26.8% of students are the age of 19 above, 22 or 12.7% of students are between the

ages of 14-16. Most of the students are between the ages of 17-18 because it has been

discovered that social media is the main factor in students' academic failure. Students spent

too much time scrolling through social media can result in symptoms of anxiety and/or

depression (Katie Hurley, LCSW 2020) Students over the age of 17-18 we recommend that

they should focus on their study, have time management and occasionally take a break

especially about their health because if they focus too much in their social media accounts,

there is a tendency that they forget their health. And for the younger age of 14-16 we

recommend them to not spend too much time on social media instead focus on their study.

first with the average of (3.8). Social media users or not, it's always remembering that in

social intelligence, the content that has been reported falls into four general categories:

intolerance, aggravation (including threats), possibly criminal activities and sexually

explicit content. Additionally, any post type, including text posts, photos, videos, memes,
third-party URLs, shared material, or reposted content, might fit into these categories.

Company-specific content is another sort of content that could be considered inappropriate.

Trade secrets, images of children, and images of fieldwork are a few examples of content

kinds that may cause concern in numerous sectors (Lindsey Twigg 2020). Researchers

recommend them to filter and block harmful. or inappropriate content on their devices and

have the right talks. Help themselves realize that occasionally they might encounter things

that they would prefer they didn't see. Third rank is "Did it affect you negatively?" with

an average of (3.30). Social media usage can have a detrimental impact on them by

diverting their attention, preventing them from sleeping, and exposing them to bullying,

rumors, unrealistic expectations of other people's lives and peer pressure (Mayo Clinic

Staff 2022). Researchers recommend socializing because it is a vital part of our lives. It

enhances our sense of community and connection. Understand how social media affects

issues like loneliness and anxiety. If they understand this, they may learn how to use social

media in a conscious manner giving more control over online habits and decreased sense

of dependence.

The table shows the all-inclusive weighted mean of the question "Have you ever

felt unsafe using social media?" which 3.31 is and the verbal interpretation is often.

Students consider social media to be unsafe for teens. The risks might be related to how

much social media teens use. Students believe that using social media has a huge factor

that can cause them harm. (Claude Mellins) Although there are important benefits, social

media can also provide platforms for bullying and exclusion, unrealistic expectations about

body image and sources of popularity, normalization of risk-taking behaviors, and can be

detrimental to mental health. The first thing that we should do is to guide them to not post

everything online. The table shows the overall weighted mean of the question "Have you

experience to be cyber-bullied?" which is 3.15 and the verbal interpretation is often. Senior

High School Students also find social media can cause undesirable behaviors that are

offensive or threatening to others, such us cyberbullying. This is a relatively new

phenomenon. According to Belsey (2006, p.1), “Cyberbullying involves the use of

information and communication technologies such as e-mail, cell-phone and pager text

messages, instant messaging, defamatory personal websites, blogs, online games and

defamatory online personal polling websites, to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile

behavior by an individual or group that is intended to harm others.” We should keep

connected to the students and let them hear out about their experiences and guide them to

not be able to get cyber-bullied again. The table shows the overall weighted mean of the

question "Have you experience to be cyber-bullied?" which is 3.15 and the verbal

interpretation is often. Senior High School Students also find social media can cause

3 Relevance of social media

3.1 Social Media usage

Social Media usage Weighted Mean Verbal Interpretation Ranking

social media?

How often do you use 3.97 Often 1st

social media?

The table shows the overall weighted mean of Social Media Usage. Among the

variables "Are you active on social media?" with (3.81) weighted mean. Social media plays

a big role in teen culture today. Surveys show that ninety percent of teens ages 13-17 have

used social media. 75% report having at least one active social media profile, and 51%

report visiting a social media site at least daily. Two thirds of teens have their own mobile

devices with internet capabilities. On average, teens are online almost nine hours a day, not

including time for homework. (AACAP 2018). Researchers recommend that they spend
their time studying with the help of social media because it contains a wealth of websites

and information that can assist them with their homework. Followed by "How often do you

use social media?" with an overall weighted mean of (3.97) According to a study from the

Pew Research Center (2018) more than 50 percent

13- to 17-year-olds go online several times a day. This quickly increases during the

teenage years to over 70 minutes per day, with teenage girls having the highest usage at

just over 140 minutes per day. It is important to recognize that non-school related use of

the internet and social media is often beheld by teenagers as important for developing their

self-esteem, their acceptance among peers and their mental health. Researchers recommend

that they limit their use of social media in order to reduce the negative effects of social

media on mental health, and to be aware of when they need to use it.

We have this overall weighted mean of the question "Are you able to get enough

valid information using social media?" which gives us a 3.52 weighted mean and the verbal

interpretation is often. Most of the students answered that some information from social

media can be valid with credibility but it varies to the user’s perception. (Jiaxi Sun, 2021)

social media became the main platform for some information that has been released. Social

media became credible through the user’s perception. It is also said that the environment

of social media, communication platforms and the rapid changes of communication

channels make the authenticity and credibility of information that makes it valid for the

users. Some of us are aware that information from social media is valid but we recommend

that we also need to have a fact checking for us to have assurance to the credibility of

information that we got. The table with the question "do you think social media is a reliable

source of information?" permits us to have a 3.47 overall weighted mean and the verbal

interpretation is often. This shows that a great number of people still rely on what the

information that social media conveys before the users. Jason Riddle, 2017. This study

exposes the reliability of social media as a source of information. News sources on social

media were tracked down through the real sources to verify the authenticity of the

information. Social media still has reliability when it comes to conveying information for

the users. Nevertheless, we give this recommendation to still have plenty of sources on

social media for us to be able to have fine and reliable information. We have in this table
the overall weighted mean of the question "Do you consider social media as an educational

tool?" that gives us a 3.46 weighted mean and the verbal interpretation is often. Nowadays,

students are frequently using social media as an alternative way to learn. (Manuela

Willbod, 2019) It shows that social media can be an educational tool for students who are

currently using it. Social media are used for communication, a student can connect with

anyone at any point in time via messenger or WhatsApp. It also helps students to improve

literacy, communication and reading skills. Lastly, it also gives a distance learning

opportunity. Since educators are often using social media as an alternative way of teaching,

students who have a long distance in schools are able to have this privilege to learn from

educators. We recommend to each student who is having a difficult time to learn from other

ways of learning, to use social media as an educational tool.

Chapter V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS.

This chapter provides a summary of findings along with the recommendations

based on the data that have been evaluated and interpreted.

answer the survey through Google Forms. The research instrument as well as the research

objectives consist of (1) The background Profile of the respondents which consists of age,

sex, grade level, senior high school track and curricular strand (2) Effects of social media

in productivity, information dissemination, questioning self-worth and cyber bullying (3)

Relevance of social media platforms in terms of social media usage and information

reliability.

The gathering of information runs from 21st of November 2022 to 3rd of December

2022. The total target population of the Online, Modular and Face-to-Face learners was

200. Researchers need at least 170 respondents as their sample size. The research team

exerted effort to convince and persuade the learners to answer the checklist questionnaire.
Finally, researchers achieved sample size. The gathered data was analyzed in Chapter 4

using different statistical tools such as Weighted Mean, and Ranking, respectively.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

Age

The age was grouped into three: 14-16, 17-18 and 19 and above. Out of 170

respondents, 103 answered that they belong to the 17-18 age group. It equates to 60.5

percent which makes it the highest. Age group 19 and above was second, having 26.8

percent that equates to 45 respondents which then followed by 14-16 with 22 respondents,

equating to 12.7 percent.

Cyberbullying

With an average of 2.92, "Have you ever felt unsafe using social media?" ranked

first and shows that most of the students felt unsafe when using social media. It's followed

by an average of 2.48; "Have you experienced being cyberbullied?" ranks first and shows

that only a few of the students experienced being cyberbullied.

Grade Level

There are 98 Grade 11 students participating in the study survey, equating to 57.7

percent while Grade 12 students were 72 in number, making 42.3 percent of the 170 total

of respondents.
Information Dissemination

With an average of 3.78, "Have you encountered false information in social media"

respondent’s feedback says that they often encounter false information from social media.

Followed by "Did it affect you negatively" with an average of 3.30, implies that they had

been affected frequently by misinformation.

Coming after "Do you encounter negative information in social media" with an

average of 3.8 indicates that they also have encountered negative information in social

media. It is then followed by "Are you a victim of false information" conveys an average

of 2.90, they said that they have a neutral experience of having false information. Going

after "Are you a victim of false information" presents an average of 2.93 which implies

that few of the students had experienced being a victim of false information. Lastly, it is

followed by "If yes, did it affect you negatively" along with an average of 2.79 that

represents the students neutral experience of being affected negatively by false

information. These variables present the advantages and disadvantages of social media to

the mental health of every student.

Productivity

With an average of 3.62, "Do you feel like you can do more with assistance of social

media" ranked first and shows the advantages of having assistance through the usage of

social media. It indicates the vital role of social media usage as an assistance of doing more

things. It's followed by an average of 3.24, "Do you feel less productive after using social

media?" These results explicitly show that social media can be the reason that students will
become unproductive. The variables show the advantages and disadvantages of social

media to the mental health of every student.

Sex

77.5 percent or 132 of 170 respondents were female. While male respondents were

38 in number, which equates to 22.5 percent.

Senior High School Curricula and Academic Strand

Accountancy and Business Management has 25 (twenty-five) frequency, and a

percentage that makes the 14.8 (fourteen-point-eight) percent of 170 (one-hundred-

seventy). Academic Track: General Academic Strand has 35 (thirty-five) frequency, that

equates to 20.4 (twenty-point-four). Academic Track: Humanities and Social Sciences has

a frequency of 68 (sixty-eight) frequency, that equates to 40.2 (forty-point-two) percent. It

is the highest among the five strands. Technical Vocational Track: Home Economics has

frequency of 22 (twenty-two) that equates to 13.1 (thirteen-point one) percent. Lastly,

Technical Vocational Track: Information Communication Technology received 20

(twenty) frequency that equates to 11.5 (eleven-point-five) percent, making them the

lowest.

Social Media Usage

RECOMMENDATION

Based on the result of the study, the following is hereby recommended. This study

should encourage all students in Dominic Institute of Science and Technology to answer

the following questions that we conducted so that we can find out the advantages and

disadvantages of social media as it has the possibility of affecting the mental health as

perceived by the students of Dominic Institute of Science and Technology. Researchers

recommend every student to not get easily carried away, lose track of time or become so

engrossed in it thereby disrupting their normal daily life. Researchers suggest that teachers

should have a casual teacher-student relationship. This will help students to trust teachers

more, feel comfortable speaking openly, not scared to ask any questions, actually love

coming to class, eager to listen and follow recommendations. Researchers encourage

schools to be stricter in regards to using gadgets in school to further focus on all school

matters. And also, schools should implement activities that can boost students to be more
efficient in understanding the lesson instead of scrolling with their mobile phones while

studying. The researchers recommend that the community hand that they should be aware

of using social media in their everyday living would help the students and other people by

making a program for the effects of using social media in their mental health. In this way,

more people will be encouraged and understand.
