Second Officer Exam: Ship Stability

This document contains an examination for the rank of Second Officer (GT≥500) with questions on ship stability and construction. The exam has two parts, with Part A containing three questions on ship stability calculations involving loading conditions, statical stability curves, and a list caused by lost cargo. Part B has three questions, one requiring a diagram of bilge pumping arrangements, another defining several ship design terms, and a final question involving a labeled sketch of a crude oil tanker's half midship cross-section.

Part (A) : Ship Stability ;

Q.1) - A vessel summer displacement 22400 t, corresponding to a mean draft of 9.2m is loading
at water density of 1004 kg/m3 , her present draft is 9.25m forward and 9.57m aft.
How much cargo can she load to her tropical marks on reaching the sea if she
consume 15 tons of bunker on her passage, TPC = 30 (17M)

Q.2) - A vessel’s Displ = 40000t, KG = 10.80m and FSE = 0.20m.

The GZ values are as follow:
Heel (Deg.) : 0 15 30 45 60 75 90
GZ (m) : 0 0.70 1.40 1.67 1.70 0.90 - 0.40
Draw the curve of statical stability and using the curve find the followings:
a) - Range of positive stability,
b) - The maximum righting lever and the angle at which it occurs,
c) - The righting moment at 25º of heel. (16M)

Q.3) - A ship of displ= 7500t, KM=8.60m, KG=7.80m lost a quantity of deck cargo (kg = 12m)
from 4m to starboard of the center line, if the resulting list is 3º 20´ to port.
Calculate the weight of the deck cargo lost. (17M)
