Antonino R Buenaventura

Jose Maceda
•Maceda embarked on a life-long dedication to the understanding and popularization of Filipino traditional
music.

Fernando Amorsolo y Cueto was a portraitist and painter of rural Philippine landscapes. Nicknamed the
"Grand Old Man of Philippine Art, he was the first-ever to be recognized as a National Artist of the Philippines.
Fernando Amorsolo y Cueto was one of the most important artists in the history of painting in the Philippines.

GUILLERMO TOLENTINO,1890 - 1976
Guillermo Estrella Tolentino was
bilipine sculptenand professor of the university of the Philippines. was designated as a National Artist of the
Philippines for Sculpture in 1973, three years before his [Link] monuments, Tolentino made smaller
sculptures, which are now located in the National Museum of Fine Arts and busts of heroes at the Malacañang
Palace. He also designed the medals of the Ramon Magsaysay Award and the seal of the Republic of the
Philippines.

CARLOS "BOTONG" FRANCISCO, 1913 - 1969
Carlos Modesto "Botong" Villaluz Francisco was a Filipino muralist from Angono, Rizal.
Francisco, better known as Botong, was responsible for revolutionising the fine arts landscape of the Philippines.
He departed from the prevailing style of the Amorsolo academic and launched the modernist movement with
his fellow founders of the Modern Triumvirate, Victorio Edades and Galo Ocampo.

THEATER
Rolando Tinio
-Outstanding stage director, poet, thespian and playwright known for his numerous remarkable productions and
notable scripts.
-He established and became the administrator of the Ateneo Experimental Theater.
-His works include film scripts for Now and Forever, Gamitin mo Ako, and Milagros, sarswelas like Ang Mestiza,
Ana Maria, and komedya like Orosman at Zafira.
Wilfredo Ma. Guerrero
-He is a teacher and artist who mentored and trained many performing artists for 35 years.
-He introduced and popularized Philippine theater to different parts of the country by establishing the UP
Mobile Theater.
-His major works include Wanted: A Chaperon, Condemned, Perhaps, In Unity, Three rats, The Forsaken House,
Frustrations, etc.
Honorata “Atang” De La Rama
-At the age of seven, she has already been part of different Spanish zarzuelas where she became popular and
hailed as the “ Queen of Kundiman”.
-The sarsuelas she became a part of are Dalagang Bukid, Mascota, Marina, Pangarap ni Rosa, etc.
-The sarzuela she wrote are Puri ng Bahay, Anak ni Eba, and Aking ina.

LITERARY ARTS/ LITERATURE


AMADO VERA HERNANDEZ
National Artist for Literature (1973)
-"Makata ng Mangagawa"
- Poet, playwright and novelist is among the Filipino writers who practiced "committed arts".
- In his view the function of the writer is to act as the conscience of society and to affirm the greatness of the
human spirit in the face of inequity and oppression.
JOSE GARCIA VILLA
National Artist for Literature (1973)
- He is considered as one of the finest contemporary poets regardless of race or language.
- Introduced the reversed consonance, rhyme scheme, including the comma poems that made full use of the
punctuation mark in an innovative, poetic way.
- "Art is a miraculous flirtation with nothing! Aiming for nothing and landing on the sun."
NICK JOAQUIN
National Artist for Literature (1976)
- Enriched the English language with critics coining "joaquinesque" to describe his baroque Spanish flavored
English or his reinventions of English based on Filipinisms.
- Written plays, novels, poems, short stories and essays including reportage and journalism.

ARCHITECTURE
Pablo S. Antonio
-was known for his simple architectural designs consisting of clean lines and functional curves. He did not focus
much on the aesthetics of his design but the strength of the architecture. His main considerations in his
structures were austerity and function. Included in his significant works are FarEastern University Administration
and Science buildings; and theaters like the Lyric Theater, Ideal Theater and Galaxy Theater,among others.
Leandro V. Locsin-
-was a remarkable architect who designed numerous structures including residential and commercial buildings,
churches, government offices, hotels, etc. His architectural designs were described as original and modern with
a touch Filipino culture and arts represented by the presence of traditional forms and patterns in his works. His
grandest work is the Istana Nurul Iman (Palance of Religious Light). This was the palace of Sultan of Brunei with
200,000 sqm floor area. The design of the structure is a mix of Islamic and Malayan themes and modern lines.
Juan F. Napkil-
-The most prominent elements in Juan F. Napkil’s architectural designs were their strength, function,
and aesthetics. His works were reflections of the Philippine Traditional and cultural heritage. Some of his major
works are the Avenue Theater and Hotel Building, Quezon Institute Buildings, International Eucharistic Congress
Altar, and the renovated Quiapo Church.
FILM
Lamberto Avellana
With Notable works such as Anak Dalita (1956), Badjao (1957), Kandelerong Pilak (1954), and many more. He
was known to be the first Filipino director to use film cameras to establish a point-of-view. His first film Sakay
(1939), showcased his unique filmmaking style imitated by succeeding directors. And in 1976, Avellana was
conferred National Artist for Theatre and Film.
Grardo De Leon
Was known for his notable works such as “Noli Me Tangere (1961), El Filibusterismo (1962), Dyesebel (1953),
Pedro Penduko (1954), and American-financed cult horror films in the 1960s like Terror is a Man (1959), Brides
of Blood (1968), and much more. a medical doctor by profession but his passion for film arts led him to his
fruitful career as an actor and director. De Leon died in 1981 and immediately a year later was conferred as
National Artist for Cinema.
Manuel Conde
Was known for his notable works such as, Genghis Khan (1950) Ibong Adarna (1941), Ang Ibong Adarna (1955),
Juan Tamad film series (1947 to 1963), Prinsipe Teñoso (1954),and much [Link] one of the biggest names in
the film industry during its golden age in the '50s, he was the first to bring Philippine cinema to the international
stage with his epic film Genghis Khan at the 1952 Venice Film Festival. His ahievements brought him immense
recognition as a film maker.
