Today’s education is much dissin Students today are more expose to modern world and I am one of them. Our education now, requires lots of potentials and capabilities. As we are about to finish our college journey, we are required to go through a Practice Teaching. This training exposes us to the real environment where we take the role of a real teacher. We are being able to perform activities like what a teacher does. Thus, it is a big challenge for us because adjusting oneself is a must to deal with various attitudes and differences of your students. Practice Teaching is the peak of all Experiential Learning Courses. It is the total engagement of the forthcoming teacher in the real world of a teacher. In addition, in this training practice teachers experiences the fundamentals of teaching process. He or she will be able to familiarize the actual teaching process and evaluate the learning. The pre-service teacher, who maybe also called as a student teacher intern, walks the whole process of teaching AKLAN STATE UNIVERSITY- College of Teacher Education 2 _— with the guide of his or her student teacher mentor or the cooperating teacher. The said training puts the pre-service teacher into actual practice where we are about to apply all that we have learned from the content, theory, strategies and methods as well as the educational knowledge acquired from related courses prior to practice teaching. Being one of the pre- service teacher is not that quite easy. It requires lots of patience, perseverance, innovatively, compassion and knowledge. Self-confidence is also a must. This training is the very serious stage of our learning. A student- teacher must act like a real one, he or she should possess the enthusiasm of a teacher. This training helps us in developing our knowledge, in expanding our experiences, in intensifying our flexibility and in developing a harmonious relationship inside the four corners of classroom. Being involved in the field of teaching is one step closer to what a future teacher dreams AKLAN STATE UNIVERSITY- College of Teacher Education 3 —— Background about/on Student Teaching Student teaching is required for education students. It is a requirement for Pre-Service Teachers to practice what they have learned in the course/area of specialization. The student teaching experience was conducted about the length of a semester or quarter, long enough to fulfill the college's assigned tasks. The student teacher is usually positioned in a neighboring or cooperating school. He/she is monitored by the cooperating teacher from the school, as well as supervisor from the college where he/she came from. The student teacher normally shadows the cooperating teacher for about one week, eventually gaining more responsibility in teaching the class as the days and weeks progress. Eventually, the student teacher will assume most of the teaching responsibilities for the class including class management, lesson planning, assessment, and grading. Thus, the student teacher is able to more fully experience the role of the teacher as the classroom teacher takes on the observation role in the class. There is sometimes a “phrasing out” when the student teacher returns the teaching role back to the regular teacher. ‘The supervisor, as well as cooperating teacher, monitor the progress of the student teacher throughout the AKLAN STATE UNIVER: ITY- College of Teacher Education 4 ——— experience, ensuring satisfactory work. A grade of pass or fail in student teaching, as well as satisfactory completion of a school’s education program, is an indication whether the institution recommends the pre-service teacher to graduate. AKLAN STATE UNIVERSITY- College of Teacher Education 5 Objectives Make Every New Teacher Observe and Learn Right (MENTOR) 1. Demonstrates deep and principled understanding of the learning processes and the role the teacher in facilitating these processes in their students. 2. Manifests a meaningful and comprehensive knowledge of the subject matter they will teach. 3. Applies a wide range of teaching process skill (including curriculum development, lesson planning, use of appropriate the technology, materials development, educational assessment, and teaching approaches.) 4. Acquires direct experience in the field/classroom (e.g., classroom observations, teaching assistance, practice teaching.) 5. Practice the professional and ethical requirements of the teaching profession. 6. Facilitates learning of diverse types of learners, in diverse types of learning environments, using a wide range of teaching knowledge and skills. 7, Reflects on the relationships among the teaching process skills, the learning processing in the students and the nature of content/subject matter, and the boarder social forces encumbering the school and educational processes in order to Cory AKLAN STATE UNIVERSITY- College of Teacher Education 6 constantly improve their teaching knowledge, skills and practices. 8. Creates and innovates alternative teaching approaches, takes informed risks in trying out these innovative approaches, and evaluate the effectiveness of such approaches in improving student learning. 9. Continues to learn in order to teach to learn to better fulfil their mission as teachers. AKLAN STATE UNIVERSITY- College of Teacher Education 7 Teacher's Prayer Lord our GOD, please grant me Understanding, Knowledge, Creativity and Love. With Understanding, I may look to the future and Perceive the effect that my teaching will have on these children and thus, they may adapt my methods to fit the needs of each one. With Creativity, I can prepare fresh and interesting projects that can defy my students and expand their mind to see higher goals and dreams. With Knowledge, I can impart my lessons effectively and efficiently for my students to be able to apply them on their own lives. With Love, I can praise students for jobs well done and encourage them to get up when they fall and be humble when they win. This I pray in the mighty name of our Lord Jesus. AMEN. AKLAN STATE UNIVERSITY- College of Teacher Education Author’s Philosophy of Education nd unique. Every I believe that every child is different a! one of them needs security, attention, care and an environment where they can grow and mature emotionally, physically, morally, spiritually, intellectually and socially. It is one my biggest dreams as an educator to help my students to oviding meet their fullest potential in the said areas by Pr them a community that is safe, encourages risk-taking, and invites sharing of ideas. There are three factors that I believe are conducive in establishing such an environment, (1) the teacher who acts as a guide and supports his/her students to discover his/her true self, (2) the teacher who allows his/her students curiosity to direct their learning and, (3) to promote respect in and outside the classroom for all things and people. When a teacher established a classroom where he/she is n@ quide and provides access to information rather than acting as the primary source of information, the student's search for knowledge is met as they learn to find answers to their questions. For students to construct knowledge, they need the opportunity to discover for them and practice skills in authentic situations. AKLAN STATE UNIVERSITY- College of Teacher Education 9 Providing the student’s the access to hands-on activities and allowing them adequate time and space to use materials that reinforce the lesson being studied creates an opportunity for individual discovery and construction of knowledge to occur and in addition, I want my students to understand and love MAPEH. i want them to appreciate the importance of MAPEH for their daily live and future use, For them to become knowledgeable enough, skilful, artistic and talented individual. Additionally, I aimed to prepare my future students in developing their needed skills as to become one of the prime movers of the community. As a prospective teacher, I believe that my philosophy and my teaching styles may change throughout my teaching career. I want to remain receptive to the suggestions and open for improvement in order to enhance and build up significant confidence, AKLAN STATE UNIVERSITY- College of Teacher Education SS Chapter IZ Students Teaching Experience HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF AKLAN STATE UNIVERSITY The Aklan State University (ASU) is considered as one of the oldest institutions of learning in Western Visayas. It started as the Banga Intermediate School in 1917 through a resolution passed by the Provincial board headed by Governor Simeon Mobo. The school became a farm school with the conversion of the Banga Intermediate School into the Capiz Farm School, Aklan the being a part of Capiz then, which was formally opened in June 1918. As the enrollment increased considerably, the school was converted in 1928 into a secondary rural school and was named the Banga Rural High School. Through Republic Act No. 3439 authorized by Congressman Jose B. Legaspi, the Banga Rural High School was named the Aklan Agricultural College (AAC) in 1963, A two-year technical course was first offered. Subsequently, the college was permitted on May 19, 1966 to offer Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BSA) program, with Agronomy and Animal Husbandry as major fields. In the seventies, the College further strengthened its instruction program and continued to expand its higher AKLAN STATE UNIVERSITY- College of Teacher Education sty SS education services by offering other baccalaureate courses. In addition, it offered graduate and post graduate programs to cater to the needs of professionals who seek for career and intellectual advancement. Having met the standards and requirements of an agricultural state college, the Aklan Agricultural College was converted to Aklan State College of Agriculture (ASCA) on April 10, 1992 by virtue of Republic Act No. 7371 which was sponsored by Congressman Ramon B. Legaspi. nt provisions of R.A 7722, and R.A Pursuant to perti as R.A 8745 or the General Appropriations Act of (4) CHED-supervised institutions were integrated These were the Roxas Memorial College of Arts and Trades in Kalibo; the Aklan National College of Fisheries (ANCF) in New Washington; the Northern Panay Teachers College and the Western Polytechnic College (WAPC) (ipTC) in Makat jay. better things are yet to come for ASCA. The version of House Bill 1548 authored by Allen S. Quimpo and Senate Bill 2236 were passed on final reading on February 5, 2001 and January 29, 2001, respectively, and on April 4, 2001, R.A 9055 entitled “An Act AKLAN STATE UNIVERSITY: College of Teacher Education 12 Converting the Aklan State College of Agriculture in the Municipality of Banga, Province of Aklan into a State University to be known as the Aklan State University, appropriating Funds Therefore and for Other Purpose” was finally signed into law by President Macapagal Arroyo which elevated the former ASCA to Aklan State University (ASU). Today, the school where “boys love to work and pretty girls sing, cook and dance" has gone a long way from its obscurity in the good old days to its present national prominence. In fact, to strengthen the program’s educational program, the Master of Arts in Teaching Elementary Agriculture (MATEA) and Master of Science in Agricultural Education (MS Ag.Ed.) were offered and then Aklan Agricultural College (ACC), now ASU. When the trust of the government was focused on free elementary and secondary education, the need ified teachers increased. As an answer, the University (then ACC) decided to offer the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) progr: on in Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) under the ducation Services Unit. This decision was affected upon the auth ranted by DEC Order No. 115, series of 1987 effective S.¥. 1987-88, with pelardo Legaspi as its first director. With the integration of four (4) Public Higher Educ; Institutions (HEIs) in Aklan to Aklan State College of Agriculture by virtue of RA 7722, RA 8292 and RA AKLAN STATE UNIVERSITY- College of Teacher Education 16 —— 8745, the Teacher Education programs of the University has expanded its coverage and strengthen its identity. The Aklan National College of Fisheries (then Aklan National School of Fisheries until June 1964), now ASU- College of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, New Washington campus had as its flagship program the Bachelor of Science in Fishery Education with specialization in Fish Processing, Agriculture, Marine Fisheries and Food Technology, and minors in mathematics and Filipino. Ninety-five percent (95%) of its graduates qualified to the Professional Board of Teachers and was ranked sixth (6t) among tertiary schools in Region VI. Because of this feat, and the confidence to offer the Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED) and the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) programs, the college applied recognition, thus, on April 15, 1996, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) granted ANCF the authority to offer said programs through CHED Order No. 66, series of 1996, and the effective school year 1996-97. At the Roxas Memorial College of Aets and Trades (RMCAT), now ASU-College of Industrial Technology, Kalibo campus, Teacher’s Education was coursed through the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education (BSIE) program, which first offered for enrolment in 1976, It prepared practical arts AKLAN STATE UNIVERSITY- College of Teacher Education 17 teachers for both the elementary and secondary school, with experience in Automotive, Cosmetology, Civil ‘Technology, Draft Technology, Electrical ‘Technology, Machine Shop Technology, Industrial Arts, Food Technology, Home Economics, Furniture and Cabinet Making, Garments and Textile Technology, and Technology and Home Economics. For three decades, the college has produced graduates who now join the ranks of teachers, some of whom have risen to occupy leadership positions in the various sectors of the community acher As a proof of the high performance of the College’ Education program, from 1999-2003, the institution was selected as one of the Top Performing Higher Educational Institutions In Teacher Education (Elementary level) Licensure Examinations, category 3, with b10-99 examinees where ASU-Kalibo campus got 80% to be ranked in Region VI. With the commencement of the Revised Basic Education Curriculum (RBEC), the BSIE course need to be gradually phased out to give way to more responsive teacher education course, which is the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED), major in Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE). The first batch of BSED-TLE in ASU-CIT has been accepted starting S.¥. 2006- 2007. AKLAN STATE UNIVERSITY- College of Teacher Education 18 ——————————————————————— It was in 1995 that the Western Aklan Polytechnic College (then Ibajay National Agricultural and Industrial School), now ASU-College of Hospitality and Rural Resource Management, Tbajay Campus opened its door to and education degree program the BSED and BEED. Its first graduates proved good in the Licensure Examination for Teachers with 50% passing rate. Today, it strives to excel in its field with three alizations-English, Filipino, and Mathematics. In the ASU-Teacher Education Center, Makato Campus (then the Northern Panay Teachers College) Teacher Education ‘ogram was first offered during $.¥. 1996-97 as Bachelor of Education, with majors in Techno0logy and Home onomics, and Physical Education. AKLAN STATE UNIVERSITY: College of Teacher Education 19 Today, the College of ‘Teacher Education takes pride of its quality and relevant education programs from the undergraduate to the post graduate courses. Its Doctor of Philosophy in Education degree program, which was passed and approved by the ASCA Board of Trustees through Resolution No. 8, series of 1993, captures not only school administrators, professors, government executes from Aklan but other leaders from the region. Likewise, its Master in Education program is a forerunner and popular among teachers in the province and prime mover in consortia centers throughout the region. It was in 1987 that then DECS Sec. Lourdes R. Quisumbing issued DECS Order No. 26, series of 1987 authorizing ACC to offer MA in Education major in Educational Management . The graduate school consortia with higher education institutions in Region VI for its MA in Educational Management was recognized and approved then by DECS regional Director Pedro B. Armand Fabella by Board of chair DECS Undersecretary Erlinda Pifianco, the offering of five (5) graduate programs: MA in Educational Management, MS in Agricultural Education, MA in Teaching AKLAN STATE UNIVERSITY: College of Teacher Education 20 Livelihood Education, and MPA. In June 2003, the ASU Board of Regents approved the offering of MA in Education major in Physical Education at the ASU-New Washington Campus. No doubt today, as the College of Teacher Education becomes an independent unit, the name that is carved for so jong, the history that it has kept for some time, and the identity it has dreamed for will last come to reality. This day marks another phase in CTE’s metamorphosis. The Higher Education services branch out in 2001 to become CAFES, SVM, CIT, CFMS, CHARM, and SAA, where the BSED course was nurtured as the prime program. For five (5) years, the Teacher Education program emerged as the most important factors in the survival of the School of Arts and Sciences. It has grown up to a stage where it must attain independence, thus, on May 14, 2006 the Board of Regents came up with a decision through BOR Resolution No. 21-19, series of 2006, granting the independence of the Teacher Education program from the folds hool of Arts and Sciences, and creating a new college of th to be known as the College of Teacher Education (CTE), with the four (4) T!s mission-“Training Tomorrow’s ‘Teachers Today”. College of Teacher Education aa Reflection In eve every challenge that we meet, remember that it has its purpos i Purpose. Being a practice teacher gives us opportunity to handle things and reports as a true teacher. Accomplishments reports were one of the difficult things to do as a teacher. at first, I was a little bit confused because I never really knew what are the essence and importance of all these, But as time goes by, I have also learned to do and records grades as well as to check the output of my learners, through the aid of criteria or rubrics. I have learned to record all the outputs of my students, so that it would be easy for me to compute their grades. Also while we are doing our part as a Pre-Service Teacher in our cooperating school, we still have our part as a student in our own school and for that we still can have our bonding moments through the activities that we are participating. We are in all different cooperating school but it’s not a hindrance for us to be not together.
