Description

Write your description of the educational technology tool/product used to support innovation in

teaching and learning in the selected scenario.

The technology used in the teaching scenario IV refers to Augmented Reality (AR). In this

scenario, the teacher adopted AR to help students better understand and explore parts of the human body

during two lessons. AR is a visualization technology allowing the integration of real and virtual objects in

the same space and a real-time, as it enables individuals to experience real-world augmented with virtual

elements (Bower et al., 2014; Pellas et al., 2018). Thus, AR has three main characteristics: (a) real and

virtual item combinations, (b) interactive in real-time, and (c) 3D registration (Azuma, 1997). The AR

technology has been used in K-12 settings and higher education institutions to teach science, physical

science, social science, medical science, and arts (Bower et al., 2014; Pellas et al., 2018) .

Theoretical Frameworks

Write your text about the Theoretical and empirical framework related to the use of the

educational technology tool in the provided scenario (supported by literature)

The way AR was used in scenario IV can be connected to objectivist theories, mainly

information-processing theories, which are based on a memory model of three types: (a) sensory registers,

(b) short-term memory (STM), and (c) long-term memory. Some teaching practices based on this model

are: (a) using interesting materials to catch students' attention, (b) visual representations of abstract

concepts, and (c) instructions focusing on new information in new materials to help students in creating

connections (Roblyer, 2016). In this scenario IV, the teacher used AR to introduce new concepts to the

students. These practices can be ideally achieved through integrating AR applications as it provides high-

quality visualizations that can engage students with the taught concepts.

Furthermore, within this scenario IV, AR can be associated with one constructivist theory:

scaffolding. Scaffolding theories influenced by Lev Vygotsky stated that children learn by building on
3

what they know through scaffolding and adult interventions (Roblyer, 2016).Technology tools such as

AR are based on scaffolding concepts as it moves students to higher understanding levels through

showing graphic examples (Roblyer, 2016).

Research Findings

Write your Discussion of research findings from the literature and related research about

educational technology tool use by teachers and students in the provided scenario

Studies conducted on AR in education has shown positive effects on student learning. For

example, a literature review conducted by Koutromanos et al. (2015) indicated that AR had a positive

influence on students' involvement and participation and learning outcomes. This is in line with another

review of 24 studies examining AR in art, language, library, math, and science in k-12 educational

settings between 2006 and 2017. The review indicated recurring themes and positive impact on learning

attitude, motivation, engagement, academic performance, critical thinking skills, and collaboration (Maas

& Hughes, 2020).

Findings by Chen & Tsai (2012) and Demitriadou et al. (2019) and Sáez-López et al. (2019)

provided valuable feedback for educators that integrating VR technologies in any subject area in primary

schools resulted in desirable outcomes.

[….]

Strengths and Limitations

Strengths and limitations of the educational technology tool for promoting educational

improvement and innovation

Results of a meta-analysis by Nurbekova & Baigusheva (2020) suggested the following

advantages of using AR in teaching and learning: (a) higher comprehension levels, (b) increasing

academic achievements, and (c) improving visual thinking skills. Another advantage of AR is providing

more interactive and interesting lessons; thus, enhancing engagement levels and the interest in learning
4

(Bressler & Bodzin, 2013; Pellas et al., 2018). However, there are some limitations of implementing AR

in education, such as technical and ethical issues. For example, AR software might not run correctly

during a lesson which will waste teaching time until the problem is fixed; thus, it will negatively impact

the education quality (Alsadoon & Alhussain, 2018).

[….]

Impact

Discussion of the impact of the educational technology tool for fostering innovation in teaching

and learning

Integrating AR applications into classrooms will bring a considerable change to teaching and

learning processes. For instance, learning environments where the AR is used will require less crowded

classrooms and a lower student-teacher ratio (Alsadoon & Alhussain, 2018) and the learning environment

should be equipped with AR systems. Additionally, teachers' roles will be facilitators and designers of

learning experiences instead of just lecturers (Bower et al., 2014). On the other hand, students will learn

through new approaches as the VR offers high-quality visualizations that were not available previously

(Alsadoon & Alhussain, 2018).

[….]

Recommendations

Recommendations on how to overcome the limitations mentioned above

The lack of ICT infrastructure, which refers to equipment availability, support applications,

Internet access, and digital content (Lu et al., 2015) can be an obstacle to implement AR in schools. It is

recommended that this issue can be tackled by analyzing the UAE's schools learning environment needs,

which then will be referred to the Ministry of Education. Since AR is a new technology, I recommend

offering training to teachers as they may be lacking awareness of the AR potentials in teaching and

learning, how to link AR technologies to pedagogical paradigms, and lacking skills to use it.

Suitability of AR

Report on the suitability of the selected educational technology tool for fostering effective

innovation in teaching and learning based on own and/or others (interviews) experience with the

educational technology tool and in comparison, with findings from the international research literature

Researchers like Collins 2009 (as cited in Alsadoon & Alhussain, 2018) suggested that

integrating AR in classrooms is suitable for any age group, subject area, and grade level. Thus, we can

infer that implementing AR in UAE's schools is suitable, especially since most studies have found

advantages of integrating AR in teaching and learning processes (e.g., Nurbekova & Baigusheva, 2020).

Although I never used AR in my teaching, I believe that AR technologies in UAE schools will be highly

beneficial teaching and learning and for the students as most of our students are digital natives (e.g.,

Koutromanos et al. (2015).
