Tugurejo Village, Ngasem district of Kediri Regency, precisely
at the center of the meeting of five roads that lead to
Gampengrejo, Pagu, Pare, Pesantren and Plosoklaten. The
specicific reason for building SLG Monument is unknown. In
some sources, it was inspired by Jongko Jojoboyo, the king

HISTORY OF “KAMPUNG INGGRIS”

The name of the English Village in Pare Subdistrict, Kediri Regency is

worldwide. Many believe if you want to be successful in learning English, a study
in this English village. Because there are already countless thousands of people
who have learned and successfully studied English there.

If at this time the English Village is already very famous, it cannot be

separated from the persistence of the teachers and students. Because they have
the intention to learn, then when it comes to Kampung Inggris Pare, students will
be total in learning. So from only one English language course institution, there
are now 250 English language course institutions. Cool is not it. Pare English
Village is located along Jalan Anyelir, Jalan Brawijaya, Jalan Kemuning in
Tulungrejo Village and Pelem Village, Pare District, Kediri Regency, East Java.
The history of this British village is unique. As reported by Wikipedia, initially in
Tulungrejo Village there was only one English language course institution, the
Basic English Course (BEC). BEC was established on 15 June 1977. Founded
by Kalend Ocean, this institution was the pioneer of the founding of Kampung
Inggris in Pare, Kediri.

Starting in 1976, Kalend Osein is a santri from Kutai Kartanegara, East

Kalimantan who studied at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor, Ponorogo, East
Java. Stepping in fifth grade in the cottage, Kalend left school because he could
not afford the education costs. There is no money even to return to their villages.
In this difficult condition, a friend of his told that there was an ustadz (teacher) in
Pare, Kediri who mastered eight foreign languages.

The Ustadz was named KH Ahmad Yazid. Kalend then intends to study
with the hope of at least being able to master one or two foreign languages. He

106
lived and studied without spending money at Darul Falah Islamic Boarding
School, Pelem Village, Pare District, owned by Ustadz Yazid.

One day, two students came to study English with Ustadz Yazid to
prepare for the state exam in two weeks to be held at his campus, IAIN Sunan
Ampel, Surabaya, East Java. At that time Ustadz Yazid was going to Majalengka,
West Java. The two students were directed to study with the Kalend by Ustadz
Yazid’s wife. Kalend agreed to the request and they finally got involved in the
teaching and learning process in the foyer of the pesantren area mosque. The
learning is quite short but intensive for five days. A month later the two students
returned and informed the Kalend that they had passed the test.

The success of the two students was spread among the students of IAIN
Sunan Ampel, Surabaya and they were interested in following in the footsteps
of their seniors by studying the Kalend Osein. Since then, on June 15, 1977,
Kalend established a course called the Basic English Course (BEC) in
Singgahan Hamlet, Pelem Village, Pare District, Kediri. The first class only had
six students. The students not only learn English but also religious knowledge.
For ten years Kalend developed his course institution.

Slowly BEC is becoming widely known and more and more people want
to study at BEC. Because of the high interest of the community in learning
English, the number of course participants is increasing every day. BEC course
institutions also open several branches with different names, namely Happy
English Course (HEC 2) and Effective English Conversation (EECC).

In the early 1990s, Kalend encouraged the BEC alumni to create a course
institution to accommodate students who did not get a quota due to the growing
number of interested people who wanted to study at BEC. Gradually, the number

107
of institutions in Pare is increasing and forming a village. At present, there are
more than 250 courses in Kampung Inggris.
