ELC092 - COMMUNICATIVE SPEECH FOR FOUNDATION STUDIES
PERSUASIVE SPEECH
Topic: It Is Okay To Be A Social Media Influencer
Issue: In our modern age, seeing teenagers becoming social media influencers while juggling
their studies are definitely a common occurrence. However, as more and more of us
use various social media platforms as a medium of influencing others, the social
stigma that we receive has simultaneously increased, especially from the older
generations.
Purpose: To convince my audience that it is completely fine to become an influencer on social
media and to open their eyes to all the benefits they could receive once they become
an influencer themselves.
I. INTRODUCTION
Attention Getter: “You’re only wasting your time if you want to be an influencer”
“Why do you even consider becoming one? They’re all bad news”
“I don’t see what future you’re envisioning if you even want to
become one” Ladies and gentlemen, this is only the surface of how
bad the social stigma is towards us young adults who wish to take
on social media influencing. Not to mention, this is only what the
media allows us to hear and see. God knows what they portray us
as behind all those rolling cameras and biased headlines.
Thesis Statement: Therefore we must speak up against these horrible stereotypes and
assumptions by proving to the public that being a social media
influencer would bring more benefit than harm to ourselves as well
as others as we learn how to properly use social media as a way of
influencing and advocating positivity to those around us.
Preview of Main Points: In my speech today, I aim to focus on persuading you all that
becoming someone who guides others through the media was
never a bad idea, and that the opinions of those who think this
concept is somehow irrelevant does not determine who and
what we can be. As the common saying goes, “Be You, Do
You, For You.”
Firstly, I will expatiate/elaborate on multiple benefits that teenagers would be
able to receive from engaging with others on social media. Secondly, I will
highlight the importance of having young influencers as a part of our social
community and last but not least, I will present the various methods that we
could all use to familiarize ourselves with the algorithm and consequently get
involved with others on the same network.
II. BODY
First of all, I’m sure the majority of us are aware of the rapid growth of young influencers on
every existing social platform. You name it. Youtube? Instagram? Tiktok? Twitter? Our
timelines are filled with young adults. Have any of you wondered, “What’s making all these
teenagers take up social media influencing?” “Out of all the side hobbies they could’ve gone
for, why would they choose to become influencers?” Well, let me tell you something. We've
actually been missing out on so many benefits of being young influencers.
1.0 One of the perks of being an influencer is that we could promote positivity in the network.
1.1 Social media influencing doesn’t simply mean we’re supposed to promote products
or make our own brand. I know some of us have seen a few influencers that have
shown questionable actions, given controversial comments that could heavily
change the mindset of certain individuals, especially those of young age.
[Link] Let me give you an example, do you guys know Nikocado
Avocado on youtube? As someone who watches mukbang often, I
used to be his subscriber but recently, he started to make videos
eating junk food and fast food in big amounts, resulting him to gain
a dangerous amount of weight. Here’s him before, and him after.
He became more and more careless and less mindful of what he
would say on the internet. This is a huge concern as he has a
community full of young kids and teenagers who are easily
influenced.
1.1.2 If we intend on being influencers that wish to bring a positive impact to the
table, this is the time and place to do so. Some of you might’ve never even
thought about taking up social media as a part time job. But imagine being
able to spread a positive message and have this message respected and
appreciated not only on the internet but in real life as well? Even if you’re
uncomfortable with being exposed to the media, it’s more than fine to
remain anonymous. What matters is what’s being delivered, not who’s the
one that’s delivering.
1.2 Not only are we influencing others, but we’ll also be able to build a community
which would simultaneously inspire others to spread the same message.
1.2.1 Let’s take BTS as an example. Before you question it, yes, they’re indeed
considered as social media influencers. Taman Herman, a contributor from
Forbes on BTS’ position in the media, proposes how “BTS were
influencers before celebrities knew they had to be influencers”. Now, why
BTS? I’m sure we realise how big their fandom really is. Records estimate
that they have over 30 million followers. Around the globe, you’ll find fans
of them coming from different age groups and backgrounds. How? This
was only made possible due to the positive message that they deliver.
1.2.2 For your information, they’ve also spoken on behalf of the youth at the UN
General Assembly, during the launch of Generation Unlimited. One quote
from Kim Nam Joon, the leader of the group, has stuck with me until now.
He says, “Tell me your story. I want to hear your voice, and I want to hear
your conviction. No matter who you are, where you’re from, your skin
colour, gender identity: speak yourself.” Since then, their community has
only continued to expand with the purpose of spreading love and positivity
throughout the community.
Now, I understand how we might be on a whole different level of exposure than them, but
BTS themselves started from the bottom and look at how much they’ve achieved up until
now. Everything needs a start, so why not start now?
2.0 Now that I’ve shared with you two advantages of becoming an influencer, allow me to
present to you one of the importances of taking up this little side quest.
2.1 As I had mentioned during the opening of my speech, the social stigma towards
young influencers has only gotten worse, especially due to the controversial actions
performed by some of these self-claimed ‘celebrities’. Don’t get me wrong, there’s
tons of amazing influencers who advocate positivity and support a good cause.
Some of these influencers that we could look up to include Selena Gomez who is
known for her never ending support towards body positivity and Bella Hadid who
publicly supports the #FreePalestine movement.
2.1.1 But what importance would it bring to us, and others, if teenagers like us
became influencers? As we all know, the internet is dominated by young
adults. Furthermore, the future of our country even depends on us as well as
our actions. If the media is constantly filled with hateful propaganda, it’s
become our duty to neutralize it. Spread official and reliable information. Be
neutral in your speeches. Be considerate with the pov’s of others.
This is why being an influencer will be able to help prove to the world that it
isn't just about having fun. Regardless of age, everyone has the capacity to
advocate and spread awareness for the better future of our nation. Freedom of
speech should not be limited to certain generations, just because they consider
the opinions of recent generations to be unreliable and groundless.
3.0 Since the aim of me delivering this speech is to persuade you that being a social media
influencer isn’t something you should be embarrassed about, of course I have the obligation
to show you how you can become an influencer in the first place.
3.1 Firstly, try using the same handle on all your social media.
3.1.1 In a beginners guide on how to become a student influencer written by
Amber Page, Amber suggests that student should use the same username
on all their social accounts, so brands or their audience have no problem
finding their accounts when they want to reach out.
3.2 Secondly, it’s also important to grow your following.
3.1.2 In the same article, Amber also suggests that students must grow their
audience as a head start to gain support from others. Start small! Invite
your friends and family to follow you, ask them to share your socials and
spread the word about what you wish to bring to the table. Slowly but
surely, more people will get attracted to your content and you’ll gain more
followers as time goes by. Just remember, don’t let fame change you and
change your purpose.
III. CONCLUSION
Review of the main points: Today, I had highlighted the benefits one could gain from
becoming an influencer, the main significance of being
someone who influences others on the network as well as
the methods we could use to start our journeys as
influencers ourselves.
Restate Thesis Statement: If we understand the importance of all the points I had shared
earlier, you would know that we must take action against
these horrible stereotypes and assumptions by proving to the
public that being a social media influencer would bring
more benefit than harm to ourselves as well as others as we
learn how to properly use social media as a way of
influencing and advocating positivity to those around us.
Closure: Thus, I persuade you to realize that social media is not only a platform where
people share their stories, post their memories or complain about the
inconveniences they’ve faced, but more of a platform where we are given
the power to influence and shift the perspectives of others for the better. Just
to remind you, I’m not standing here to force the idea of being a young
influencer on any of you, but I want you to understand that there’s nothing
wrong with becoming an influencer. At the end of the day, my sole aim was
to only persuade you on how after all this time, it should never be argued or
debated if you, or anyone around you, decides to become an influencer in
the future. Thank you.
