English for Engineering (B1-B2)

Project title: "Technological Innovation and Sustainability on …"

A. Project Description:
The aim of this project is to foster interdisciplinary collaboration between English B1 level
university students from different majors (Computer Engineering, Industrial Design
Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Chemical Engineering) in a joint effort to promote
technological innovation and sustainability on a company, a new service, an official institution,
etc. The proposal will be aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established
by the UN, such as SDG 7 (Affordable and clean energy) and SDG 9 (Industry, innovation and
infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable cities and communities) and SDG 13 (Climate action).

During the development of the project, students will work in interdisciplinary groups, each
consisting of one representative from each major. Groups will be randomly assigned to ensure
diversity and exchange of ideas across disciplines.

B. Phases of the Project:

1. Research and Evaluation:
Each group will conduct research on issues related to their Project ideas in terms of energy
efficiency, waste management, carbon footprint reduction and infrastructure improvements.
Students will use sources in English and present their findings both in a shared online report
and in an oral presentation.

2. Proposed Solutions:
Based on the research findings, each group will present a detailed proposal for a product or
service for innovative solutions to address the identified problems. Solutions should take into
account practical applicability, economic feasibility and positive impact on the sustainability of
the selected environment.

3. Development of Prototypes:
Each group will select one or more solutions to develop prototypes. Computer Engineering
students will be in charge of creating applications or software, Industrial Design Engineering
students will design mock-ups and physical prototypes, Electrical Engineering students will
work on energy efficiency systems and Chemical Engineering students will research sustainable
materials.

4. Integration of Disciplines:
Groups will work collaboratively to combine different solutions into a comprehensive project
that holistically addresses the challenges identified on a target group. Interaction between
disciplines will be essential to achieve a comprehensive and effective solution.
5. Final Presentation:
Each group will present their completed project at an innovation and sustainability fair they
will select. The presentation will be in English and will be evaluated on the effectiveness of the
proposed solutions, originality, feasibility and teamwork.

C. Expected benefits of the project:

- Encourage interdisciplinary collaboration between students from different majors.

- Promote awareness of sustainability and the importance of addressing environmental

challenges on society.

- Develop teamwork, English communication and project presentation skills.

- Stimulate creativity and technological innovation in the search for sustainable solutions.

This project will not only provide students with an enriching experience, but will also
contribute to the advancement of sustainability on their proposed context.

D. Examples of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that can be

addressed for this type of project:
 SDG 7: Ensure access to affordable, secure, sustainable and modern energy for all.
 SDG 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable
industrialization, and foster innovation.
 SDG 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
 SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

The Sustainable Development Goals, established by the United Nations, aim to address a wide
range of global challenges, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental
degradation, peace, and justice. Each goal has specific targets and indicators to measure
progress toward achieving a more sustainable and equitable world by 2030.
